To Borrow Or Not? (that is the question)

You are cooking a cake for the holidays you turn the stove on to preheat it for the baking, you think you have all your ingredients, you get the mixer out and start making the batter for the cake, and you realize that you do not have any eggs.
Do you turn the oven off and go to the store?
Do you borrow eggs from your neighbor?
I would turn my stove off and go to the store and get the eggs, a grocery store is not to far from where I live, I do not like borrowing from my neighbors, I don't even like asking my relatives for anything.
How would you handle this?
Do you borrow anything from your neighbors?

I feel it depends on the neighbor. Used to a neighbor and I would run to the other one if we were out of something and needed it right then. My neighbors now that I do have are nice people but I would not feel comfortable going to them to borrow anything. Like you, the grocery store is close by or the convenience store is even closer, would cost more but in a hurry would work for me.

Hello chevee, In my case, i will surely put off the oven and go to nearer store to by a tray of egg. In the first place I don't like to bake just only one cake, I like to bake more than one. Even if I'll bake one I don't think my neighbor has 8 eggs to lend me.Maybe my neighbor has one or two spare which is not enough for standard chiffon. But I always prepare to bake with complete items that for sure my cake will be mouthwatering...Borrow? no,no

I think before i would even go cooking i would always check that i have all the ingredients needed to cook because it would really be a hassle that you would have to go out to buy some ingredients at the middle of your cooking. But i think if that would happen to me i would just turn off the stove and go to the nearest grocery to buy some eggs rather than to borrow some to my neighbors because i dont want to be a bother to my neighbors also.

I have borrowed from neighbors before, just as they have borrowed from me. Typically if I'm baking and borrow from someone I'll pay them back by sharing what I'm making. These days I don't know my neighbors here well enough to borrow from them. So if I'm out, one of us heads to the store.

If it were only eggs and other ingredients, I could just go outside and buy them from m neighbors who have what we call sari-sari stores. Many of my neighbors have a supermini-store in their house.

Well, it depends on the neighbour. One of my neighbours is a very close friend of mine(we became friends after i shifted in this house). So borrowing from her, I don't have to think twice. Otherwise I am quite reserved by nature, and would prefer to get it from store. If unable to go to store, I would rather cancel my cooking for the time being. Merry Christmas!

Hi Chevee,
No I don't like borrowing either, I rather go to the shps and get what I want, though I a;ways make sure I don't run out of things, I look before I make anythings so I have evrything because I have been caught short before many times, even toilet paper and have to get my hubby to go next door to borrow a roll hehe. Hugs.

I don't really mind borrowing from my neighbors. In fact last year around Christmas, I was baking brownies and realized I didn't have any eggs because my sister boiled them all for her deviled eggs! I had already made some Christmas cookies so I brought those over when I went to ask. If you don't have anything baked already, after you're done making whatever it is you needed to borrow something for go over there again and offer some to them. It's always nice to receive baked goodies, and they will feel appreciated! Then there's also no need to worry about them thinking you are a mooch :P

Hi chevee! I do sometimes borrow things from my neighbor
across the street from me and she borrows things from me. We
are very close friends so we can do that sort of thing and
neither one of us thinks anything of it. If I have something
that she needs I will give it to her and if she has something
that I need she will give it to me. But, she is the only
person that I would borrow something from and now feel
uncomfortable about it. Otherwise, if I could I would go to
the store to get whatever it is that I needed. But, neither
one of us has a car and the grocery store is quite a walk
from where we live.

while cooking and if some of the items needed are not present and if the store is near by then in such case i would stop the stove and go to the store and bring them but if incase the the store is too far to go then i would plan to borrow from my neighbours if the cake i am preparing is already started and where i cannot stop the process then in such case i will borrow from my neighbours else i will think of postponing the plan for some time and then go to the store and bring it.
generally i too dont like to borrow from neighbours i feel very odd asking them so usually in such surcumstance i normally stop the process that i am doing and then bring from store and then start it.

I'm like you Chevee, I hate to borrow from anybody but will if I absolutely have to but in the case of something simple as eggs, we're lucky to have a country store just down the road from us so one of us will go to the store and get a dozen.
