MeganK I believe you are thinking of the word "idiom", which means an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements.

MeganK It definitely does help to unplug things from the wall that you aren't using. Power strips really come in handy for this because you can unplug everything at once. Make sure to wait until the dishwasher is full before running it. Save electricity doing laundry...

MeganK I completely understand. If I had enough space I'd eventually have enough books for a library :) But it sounds like e-books would be a good option for you. Even if it's not a paperback in your hands, you still get the great stories and writings.
