I have a coworker who shakes his locker door twice before leaving for home. So obsessed is he with locking his locker he actually reached the door and came back to jiggle the handle twice .In fact he just did it and that’s what inspired this discussion and led me into thinking if I ever do anything like that when I leave home .The answer is resounding no, as many time I have come home to find my door and windows unlocked.
What is it that makes one person so nonchalant about safety and another so obsessed with it .Is it is upbringing ?It could be that he is from the ghetto areas where robbery is very common. I am from the country areas where robberies are not as common.
What type of person are you when it comes to safety and what do you think is the reason for it ?.Also what are some of the things you do to demonstrate this safety consciousness ? or lack there of ?

Yes, i usually double check before leaving my home, either for shopping, or a travel. But fortunately, i have got a good neighbor, who will care about my apartment during absence. We have a common steel-made theft-preventive door, which gives me better assurance of safety.
When visiting a friend in England, I was told by an old couple, who are living in the country area with a large garden back their house. During their absence, they would have their light dimly on in the washing room, and their neighbors will keep en eye to offer distant guard as precaution means.

It is actually a precautious step where some one absent mindedly close the door and after taking a fewsteps theywould realize that they were really absent minded and then would return to the spot again and check whether they have locked it down well or not..this happens in many people's life and is a common thing in my country because people over here lock it in a hurry and after a few steps are scared whether they have locked it down correctly and then theyreturn again and check it again..this is just s normal pheneomena...
Merry Christmas.
Happy New Year.

Hi there, well its nice to know I am not alone - I have an obsession with checking things over far too many times!! I always feel better after checking because otherwise I end up worring about it so I do prefer to check, even when I am 90% sure that I am worrying over nothing!

I don't ever open my windows so I don't have to worry about that, but I'm always double checking my doors. I will also come back and jiggle it to be certain that it is locked. I don't know why I do it, but for some reason, I just have to. I also did it at work when I would be the one to lock up. I would sometimes walk 20 feet then turn around and check the door again even though I was pretty sure I locked and checked it already. Car doors is another thing I always seem to lock twice. It's so weird. I'm paranoid about my garage door as well. When I leave my house, I know I close the garage, but I find myslef driving around the block to pass my house to make sure the door is actually closed.

I think that I am a fairly cautious person. I almost always lock my car doors, and normally have the doors to my house locked. I live in a small town and I do not think that people are as concerned about their safety as those who live in other areas.
Personally, I think there is crime everywhere, so I try to be cautious.
I do not think your cowrker is just a cautious person. With the actions that you described, it sounds like he has OCD. Obsessive compulsive disorder is a disorder which makes people obsessed with certain factors of their lives. Your coworker exerts telltale symptoms of having OCD.

I do tend to double check my doors and windows before I leave my house. I also double check that I have my keys in my pocket when I get out of my vehicle before I lock it, then I double check that I locked the car. Call it obsessive if you want to, I call it safety.

hey ronnyb,
interesting topic... i have seen many people who double check doors and i am one among them :)
I really donno the reason for this...
i dont think its becos the person is from ghetto or wherever robbery is more...
have you not seen that some people are always more cautious... u know, not only in doors and locks, but for whatever matter it is, and I am one among those who are more cautious always...
may be thats the reason...
curious to see other responses..

yeah you have to because there are many robbers so it is for the safety of ur house u have to check the windows and doors are closed twice to help u from robbery so that u can save ur valuable things so that u could save ur money and even house hold things which cost ur hard work so i think checking is the best idea to protect ur house and even spare some time for doing that or else u only will be in trouble

There are so many people who doubt their doors closed and return back before crossing the street and recheck it.Also there are people who look worried in a function doubting whether they have switched off all the fans and lights and turned off the gas cylinder. To avoid this, one should be more concentrated when closing doors and swiching off. They may even tell to themselves,'okay!I have closed the door'.Or let another member of the family to close doors and rely on them.Cheers!

He could have some sort of psychological disorder that makes him want to check it every few minutes. Not a major disorder but just enough that triggers the need to shake it a few times. or it could be out of habit :-/
I dont know, but I do that sometimes too. I never lock my locker at school but I always feel the urge to shake it. Its not to the point where Ill get to the door and then turn around and shake it, but when I am just standing there I love shaking it!
i usually check my home door when I am at home alone but I never care too much about it. Whatever happens will happen, I guess I just live a dangerous life :p

when i leave my home i lock the door and close it ,i then try the knob to make sure it's locked. i do this because you never know when some theif is going to come along and check it for you , if it's not locked they may leave you a surprise like an empty house.

I am one person who does this.I do not know if people will call us weird or obsessed still I cant help doing it.Its not only when I go out but everyday before I go to bed I keep checking all the windows and doors. Its not only the doors and windows I check to see if the gas has been turned off if the taps have all been closed properly.Sometimes after I lie down I feel I have not checked out and I get up and do the rechecking.I feel its better that way as its safer.I dont find this strange as i keep doing it.

My husband locks everything, and jiggles handles repeatedly "just to make sure". I must say that sometimes it drives me up the wall. I can be sat in the car, waiting to leave, and he will have locked the door, jiggled the handle, come down the path to the gate, and then he goes back to jiggle the handle again!
I tell him that it is getting obssessive about it, but at least I can feel safe knowing that the door has been locked.
It is true that we can never be too careful.

I usually check the door once. I never check the windows and maybe I should start. I haven't thought about checking the windows before. Robbers really don't care, they'll try any way to get inside. I guess it's best to be safe rather then sorry. Some things I do for safety is keep a baseball bat in my room. No one can dodge a base ball bat coming to your head!

i always check if the windows are closed and if the doors are locked everytime i leave my house since that was the way i was brought up by my parents..i was taught to always be careful with my stuff especially my money..i also turn off all appliances in our house when i leave and also disconnect the gas stove from the LPG tank to prevent fires..
