this lady who is deeply religious refused to say anything other than "merry christmas" which apparently wasnt what her job wanted.. so she was fired.. she claimed that if she said anything other than merry christmas it would be against her religion in a sense because she doesnt believe in any other holidays so she lost her job to stay true to her faith..
how could happy holidays be a sin? and do you think she was right in losing her job and jeopardizing her families well being as far as money wise to stick with her "merry christmas"?
i dont see the big deal in happy holidays but well i dont believe in the same religion so that might be why.. but i really wonder if in this period of time where jobs are so hard to get and she did get another job but it paid less to where they are having it tight right now if she shouldnt have refused.. i mean if she hadnt found another job and then they get like kicked out of their home etc i just couldnt see their god wanting that to happen..
do you think god would care and she would be a traitor if she had decided to play it safe for her family and not go against them? or do you think that would just be the first step in weakening her beliefs?

I'm not Christian, I don't celebrate the new year... but that doesn't mean i have a problem with saying happy holidays to my non-Muslim friends. Heck, i say Merry Christmas to them and they say Happy Eid to me!
It isn't acknowledging that you believe in another faith rather a show of respect. By the way isn't Christmas a holiday? So what is the big deal about saying happy holidays. If she was fired for not saying it then yeah it's wrong, but she isn't exactly in the right either to simply refuse. I have Christian and Catholic friends and none of them have issues with saying happy holidays.
I agree with the article, it simply is insubordination. There must be another reason that she was fired but in respect to HER... her previous employers aren't disclosing the reason.

yeah im not christian either but i dont care if they say merry christmas to me.. most religions share xmas because its around the time as other holidays so even if the person does a different one its like most people will just go along with xmas tradition to a certain degree to where they can celebrate with everyone.. im not a christmas person at all but i still will tell people it..
and last time i checked it was a holiday lol

the employer has a point, that they had already instructed her. so with due respect to the employer, they needed to be followed. it's just a simple rule. or she could just have told her employer that she forgots about it. another thing maybe she insist to do it so and the employer got bullied or something.

i would think unless her job was to only greet people she could some how avoid saying anything so that way she wasnt going against her beliefs but wasnt going against her employer too..

What is wrong with these people? I am Agnostic, and I do not care if people say "Merry Christmas". It is a holiday, and some way, some how, everyone celebrates it. Even if you do not celebrate Christmas, you might celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, or any other holiday like that. Personally, I love Christmas because I have a great excuse to give gifts to people. A love giving more than receiving. People need to get off of their religious or non-religious high horse, and just enjoy the holiday, just love it for what it is. By the way, Christmas was not always a Christian holiday, it was a Pagan and Roman holiday. People around the world have similar holidays to it. Honestly, it is just a holiday. Get over it. Have fun and enjoy it. You only get to live once.

"Christmas was not always a Christian holiday, it was a Pagan and Roman holiday."
THANK YOU!! i have been trying to tell people that for i dont know HOW long since christmas was just made after other holidays to compete in a sense and to have a christian alternative to pagan or other holidays but omg try and get some one to actually ADMIT that that does believe in christianity is like pulling teeth.. so it the fact that its the wrong freakin time of year for it to be accurate for jesus's birth..
so with all the facts being wrong how can some one really take such a holy stance in honoring it??

well first of all merry christmas is not happy holidays Merry Christmas is Merry Christmas,
Happy holidays is exactly the politically correct thing to say,
I don't know if the woman should have been fired for saying merry christmas that is a bit much, but if she knew the rules of where she worked and didn't follow them, well rules are rules,
she did have the choice to say happy holidays and christians would know she meant merry christmas
or she could have not said anything at all.

Well first of all I dont see the big deal in saying either or for anyone to say either to me. It is a way for someone to wish you good basically. That said, she sounds like a very stubborn person. She knew what her job wanted and she didnt do so, therefore she got fired. I wouldnt have gone about it that way as the economy isnt the greatest but to each their own. If she wanted to put her family at risk that is her business I guess.
The fact that this isnt even when JC was born doesnt seem to bother anyone either.

Saying Happy Holidays would not have killed her. All I can do is roll my eyes as I read these of these "oh woe is me" tales.
Ever since the nonsense of the "Holiday Tree" came out I've called mine a Pagan Tree.

Well, all sorts of people make up this world.
And you can only say, I admire her faith in her religion.
Her principles is strong and she is one determined woman.
To place religion above all else takes guts!
And with her faith so strong, I am sure her religion will bless her with a new job soon!

Wait... Christmas isn't even really a religious day, wasn't it already proven that JC couldn't have been born in winter? Nowadays, its just a day you're forced to buy toys for kids. She lost her job for that?

YEP! and yeah they PROVED that jc COULDNT have been born in december (due to the placing of the north star in the story) so the whole holiday "date wise" is based on competing with the pagan holiday yule.. for the major holidays that pagans worship before christianity christians made holidays for the same day or a few days after etc..
but try to tell some one that jc wasnt born ON DEC 25TH sometime! i have had people go CRAZY on me saying i was nuts!!

The constitution says we have a right to the freedom of expression, and that no law will be passed to prohibit the free exercise of religion. It does not say we have the right to not be offended, She should SUE SUE SUE!!!

I believe that God would care because her heart is in the right place. Even though the holiday is pagan she still accepts the birth of Jesus. So I think God would have worked out a way. As a matter of fact whether she had said merry christmas or not God would have still been there for her. But you know this world is just getting crazier day by day.

Merry Christmas.
Why is my religion and it's public expression offensive to you. If I said Hinduism or Islam was offending me you would call me a redneck and intolerant but people tell me Christianity is offensive what am I supposed to do?
As far Christmas being a pagan or Roman holiday, how many pagans or Romans do you see around these days, pagans banging on drums to bring back the sun or Romans worshiping Zeus or Hera or any of the other dozens of gods that the Romans worshiped. Part of the reason Romans had a holiday at this time of year is because they could not keep their calendar straight. They would have a week where they needed to catch up so they just declared a party.
As far as Hanukkah it is a minor Jewish holiday and Kwanzaa was made up in 1966 in order to allow American blacks to celebrate an alternative to the dominant white society celebrations at this time of year. Also this is the party time of California gangs so was made up as a replacement for this party time.
People give the minor Jewish holiday respect and the made up Kwanzaa respect yet denigrate the Christian holiday.

some pagans dont feel comfortable in drawing attention to their beliefs or they dont see the big deal in making it THEIR holiday so they just view it as a general holiday for all and dont care what its called..
its when certain groups demand they have the ownership on the holiday is when the problems come out..

What's the big deal with Merry Christmas? I think that's insane! As a Christian, God comes first (for me personally anyways.) It's His 'holiday'. Has been for all of time as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong). If anyone has a problem with the real meaning of Christmas than they don't have to celebrate it.
I think that's unfair to her, but very noble of her. Bravo. I would loose my career to this, I would never disrespect God by saying Happy Holidays.
That's just my out look on this as a Christian.
If it's ever illegal to say Merry Christmas, than I will spend the rest of my life in prison. It's unfair to Christians to turn our celebration into a secular ordeal.
Like I said, correct me if Christmas comes from some other belief or situation. Because as far as I know, Christmas was originated to celebrate our Saviors birth.
If you don't like that, than come up with your own holiday so you don't feel left out. Sorry if I sound angry and mean, but this really upsets me.

i think that this young lady should not have lost her job because of saying " Merry Christmas" further the dunderhead that fired her should be slapped up beside the head with a shopping bag full of commercial ideas as that seems to be what he likes (commercial). CHRISTMAS isn't about the stores, it's about JESUS CHRIST
------------
I am not a religious person but but i don't agree with the commercialization of christmas.
In closing i would like to say to her former employer if they read this: From my home to yours MERRY CHRISTMAS and may god bless you....

Personally I think she did right...that's whats wrong these days...there is too much government trying to be fair to everyone that some of us that believe in Merry CHristmas aren't allowed to get others upset....well if I couldn't say Merry CHristmas where I work I would do the same thing....even if they fired me. I think so much of this is going overboard...if everyone wants everyone else to bend to their beliefs.....then I feel like I am being discriminated against because of my belief that this is truly the season of Merry CHristmas....
