What Was the Rush???

I saw a show earlier this week where people who got caught up in the recession & could no longer afford their house were being evicted. I can understand the eviction. However, one couple had 3 small children & they were being kicked out 3 days before Christmas. My question is What is the big hurry??? There aren't that many people out there looking to buy a house right now & with the Holidays, they sure aren't looking to move over Christmas. I cannot imagine what a horrible Christmas they would have had if they had still been in their home. I really cannot even imagine spending Christmas with 3 kids in my car with no place to take them to have a good day!!! Can anyone explain the mentality of banks during this time???

That's horrible! I always thought no matter what the circumstance, by most laws (at least here) one can't be evicted from their home or apartment during the holiday season....that's the law in most cases....have to check up on that Bingo just found something... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/20/AR2008112003309.html {Warning This is NOT a referral link but a link to an article} Here's an excerpt The foreclosure freeze announced yesterday will extend the mortgage modification program to those who have been declared in default and are at immediate risk of being forced from their homes. The companies said as many as 16,000 borrowers could benefit. Foreclosures and evictions will be stopped from Nov. 26 to Jan. 9. "With this suspension, seriously delinquent borrowers may have an opportunity to avoid foreclosure and work out terms to stay in their homes," said Federal Housing Finance Agency director James B. Lockhart III, the regulator in charge of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. So it sounds like this bank is doing something unethical and illegal if most policies are NOT to evict someone during the holidays

Dayum pye, I wish I had asked this before. I just pray some lawyer saw the same story I did & helps them sue the pants off that bank. Of course, it's too late to save their Christmas day. I just really don't understand how the bank can justify moving a family with kids out until they have someone else ready to move in!!!I know I wouldn't want that job!!!

It's the dayumdest example of man's inhumanity to man I've ever seen. I bet that bank is getting money from the bailout & NONE of it going to those who really need it!!! NOT everybody losing their home were deadbeats. One guy's house payment jumped from $2,000/month to $4,000/month at the same time his utilities were almost doubling. I know if my payment doubled, I couldn't afford to stay in mine. The banks convinced people to take the variable mortgages telling them that they would be able to refinance when the time came. Now that it's time, they're saying sorry Charlie!!! It should be illegal.

Hi ladyM..if anyone knew the mentality of banks, building societys, councils etc etc evicting people from their home at this time of year it would be nice to know the answer. It sickens me that people can be so callous and cruel as to be so unkind by evicting a person especially if they have small children...there HAS to be antoher way of keeping the person in their home as it costs the state more to find new homes for those affected..it is beyond me, my heart goes out to people in that position...hugs littleowl

It is beyond my ability to think to be that cruel. Adults can handle most problems. How is a small child to understand that also with Santa not coming, they no longer have a bed to sleep in. And for what???

How sad for them to do this. There is no reason for them to do this at this time.

It is greed LadyM. Banking and compassion are not good bedfellows. No doubt they take the line that they've given the family enough time to come up with the money. If they let them stay across Christmas then it won't send the right message to others in the same predicament. This is the ugly side of capitalism. I am afraid that the banks get bailed out when they get behind. Lesser mortals are evicted! Merry Christmas!!

I cannot understand that either and if I knew someone going through that, I would start a demonstration and get everyone I knew, the newspapers, the tv stations, etc., involved. I was once evicted and it was not for being behind on rent. The house that we were renting, the landlord wanted to move back. When our lease was up for renewal, he would not renew it. We fought in court, 3x, and won for 3x, for extensions. The judge was not happy with him as we always paid on time and were good tenants.

I can understand why the bank wants the house back. I can understand why the family has to leave. I just don't understand what heartless bastid couldn't give them until after Christmas. The bank is NOT losing anything to give them through Christmas!!! The housing market is depressed & few are buying new homes. I can't think of when I last heard someone say I'm moving into a new house so I don't have time for Christmas!!!

It's heartbreaking to see what's happening with people's homes and livelihoods at the moment. I don't understand why it's so damn urgent to kick people to the gutter at Christmas time. Heartless, cold and uncaring. And to think, we keep these banks alive with our investments, interest payments and fees! Bah, humbug - we should all pop our money under the mattress and let the banks sink!

I don't know what it's like in AussieLand, but here we've just handed over billions of dollars to give the banks money to begin to loan again. In other words we, the people, are loaning the banks money. Yet, they have NOT had to prove they are credit worthy, they are NOT required to give an accounting of where that money is going, they've taken that loan & squandered it....NOT helping one single person!!! Now they refuse to show how they are using it to jumpstart the economy. It just makes me want to SCREAM!!! We're giving money to the auto industry to keep them afloat. Yet the dayum banks won't loan money to people to buy the cars. If we can't buy the cars, how are they to stay a viable business. Ok...Ok, I'm stepping off my soapbox now!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I think they could have waited til after Christmas. But I hate to say it. That family knew ahead of tiem they would be getting kicked out. They should of found another place. Even going to a homeless shelter would help. I feel bad for them. Thats just like the cable cutting my internet off when oweing a few bucks. My husband called them up and the lady told him it was never cut off. But it was...big run around.

Hi ladyMarissa, That is disgusting, I though this time of the was meant to be good will to all men? what happened to that, I just think that the banks are wost then Scrooge as at least Scrooge turned good on Christmas day, they should have at least wait till after the new year, I feel so sorry for those people. I thought the billions in bailouts were supposed to stop this kind of thing. However banks are not know for being warm and fuzzy. I am sure this just did not happen suddenly and is just the culmination of being months or years behind on their inflated mortgage. I hope they find compassion in people to get a place to stay, but with three children it will be hard to rent.

I'm hoping to hear that some kind soul came to their rescue & helped them through Christmas. It would be hard to go through that any time of the year, but explaining to 3 children why they now have NO Christmas & NO home would be my worst nightmare!!!
