What if you became a vegetable?

Coma - What would your decision be?

December 27, 2008 6:48am CST
Imagine if there was a horrible disease or an accident you were in a coma for the rest of your life. Would you say you appreciate the gift of life and would be happy to live even like that or would you prefer euthanasia/pulling the plug? I wouldn't want my family to keep my alive if there was no hope. Why waste time, money and nerves when the end result will be the same? In fact, that could make a good last will but who wants to be that negative? Miracles do happen but rarely to someone we know and I'm not such an optimist.

Awww man... when I first read the topic my thought was "Hey, I would like to be peas. They are such a cheerful shade of green!" Then I read a little further. I understand that the reason most people in a vegetative state stay there is because the family cannot bear to let them go. I have expressed my desire to for my family to pull the plug if it should happen to me, but I understand that they will have to be ready to do it before it will happen.

Right now eventhough i'm not yet a vegetable, i can i already appreciate the gift of life. Though i'm not yet ready to die, but it's not because of myself but becauseh of the people around me. So if ever i become a vegetable in the future, maybe if there's already enough time spent with my family and friends like if they've already paid a visit, then maybe i can let them pull the plug without giving them the feeling of guilt or regret. They need to move on without me. Such a waste of money for something that's already hopeless.

I agree. Not just waste of money and deep emotional trauma for those around you but it is pointless. Few people wake up from a long coma and while they sleep the body starts to age and wither and no amount of therapy will help if the nature gives up.

That is what I always fear, because I am such an independent person and everything I do for myself, the thought of having someone to help me do the most basic of human things like washing, going to the toilet or being fed fills me with dread, and I wouldn't want to be a vegetable, I would want them to pull the plug, no question, I do believe in euthanasia but unfortunately it's still illegal in my country, I am very pro but that's my belief and it also depends on your beliefs about what happens to you when you die! That also makes a lot of difference as to how you answer this discussion as well.

It's illegal in the States,as well. I like to be independent, too and I wish there was a way doctors or family could help affected people without fear of legal consequences.

I think if I was ailing from such kind of disease then I would definately let my family not shed much tears and let me go as early as possible. I would suggest them to end my life as soon as possible. It creates an unnecessary problem for the family members which I think is unjustified.

I do appreciate the gift of life everyday, and I try to live life to its fullest, and to do so in such a way that my living to the fullest will also benefit my fellows. It's the reason why I am involved in the organic movement here in Davao City (Mindanao, Philippines). Living life to its fullest, while nurturing other forms of life and the environment, we are also thinking of other projects.

That's very considerate of you, does it mean you wouldn't want to be deprived of your right to enjoy life?

Life is a wonderful gift, things will happen and will change.. But we can't predict what exact act in next moment. I accept what ever may happen in my life either its good or bad ect., Accepting changes is life.. Loving the gifts either its good or bad is important thing to become successful.

I always wanted to say good bye with complete consciousness.I hate troubling others and making them pray that I pack up soon.Well God is great. He will definitely listen to my prayers.

I would hate to think of myself being like that for ever. What a burden for my family, how heartbreaking for them to have to suffer seeing me like that for ever. I have already said to my hubby that if I do ever end up like that then they are not to resuscitate me or keep me alive if there is no hope of a full recovery, not just for my sake but mainly for theirs, they are to just let me go.

No one know what can happen in life and so if one becomes a vegetable as you called it then if the thinking process is still intact he/she can still correspond with God and then the miracle can happen. It is all up to the individual.

That's possible but unfortunately, there are lots of sick people out there and miracles happen to only a few. I guess that's what being chosen means...

I honestly agree with you. I wouldnt want to put my family through that. All that false hope... My husband wouldnt move on and my kids wouldnt even know the real me. I would have to say I would prefer pulling the plug if there was no hope. That way everyone could move on with their lives and not have the baggage.

I thought about that a lot and i'm still not sure about it. I love life but i look at some people that are very sick and i always say that i couldn't live like that. But i also don't know if i was willing to just die. It's a tough 1.

Hopefully, none of us will have to face that decision. Would be nice if nobody had to but that's Darwin's natural selection and if everybody was alive and well Earth would be overpopulated.

i will choose to die.i would rather die than live like a dog which is the most unhappy matter.to lead a life as sad as that is ,i do not mean to .it brings sadness to me but also to my family members .i do not want to put them into such a great trouble to take care of a man as a baby.

I can't make a choice, Should that happened am sure my children would take the risk spending money and wasting of time and hope for a miracle, but until when? Until they would be able to do so, much they wanted to prolong my life and hope for recovery if they can no longer afford the bills, they will just surrender though against their will.

Hi all, I hope that everyone who said they would not like to live in a vegetative state have completed a living will or have a designated a health surrogate. I have been a nurse for over 30 years and know that if it's not written then you may end up total care pt. for years. I have taken care of and seen children leave their parents in this state for a long time because they just cannot let go. Sadly there has been the adult child that still collects the retirement benefits from the parent and cannot let go of that. So please make sure you put your wishes in writing.

Good point! I've mentioned that I wanted to state this in my will but I though it was too early and too,I guess, final for that. I'll think on that:)

I think it's pointless to be living when one is already a vegetable. Why not tell your family to pull the plug and get done with it? It will do them good once and for all. I love life but in this case rather than making my family suffer more, it would be better to end their miseries. Have you noticed this rnbforme? He has only one answer to all discussions and that is. "Don't mind me I'm trying to make 1000."

I'm glad we share the same opinion and I must admit I didn't pay attention to our mutual friend's responses to other discussions. Yes,you can make a 1000 points but not $1000 and even that will take a while! :)

I would definitely like them to pull the plug. They should save time, money and grief. I wouldn't want to prolong the sad feeling that my family will have every time they come to visit me or talk about me. It's better that they don't have the glimmer of hope that I'll wake up and be fine because I wont. Even if I do wake up, I won't be the same person. Either way you look at it, they will be disappointed. Pull the plug and keep all the good memories up to that point.

Good response. That's approximately how I feel about being old and going out of my mind. Isn't it better to be remembered young, strong and beautiful? I might change my mind once I have kids and grandkids but right now the choice is clear.
