Are you reading a book that is difficult to get into?

Currently I am reading "The Choice" by Nicholas Sparks as a required book club book. I am just finding it difficult to get into it! It is just dragging along. The teaser on the back cover says that the book is a story spanning the years and yet I am 2/3 of the way through the book and it has all occurred within a timespan of a month. When is this thing going to go somewhere? ..... I just keep trudging along... How about you? Are you muddling your way through a book right now, hoping it will improve? Or do you usually just give up?

I had to read War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy as school requirement and THAT was a drag! Don't take me wrong,it's a great book, especially when it comes to history and people but it has sooo many battles! That might be interesting, too but imagine reading 1500 pages one third of which are descriptions of battles and fights That book cannot be appreciated by school kids, one has to be older and wiser to actually read it instead of flipping thru pages.

This is why I have never picked that one up to read!It was always a joke in cartoons and television shows! If someone was seen reading it, it represented agonizing boredom. I'm sure it's a great piece of literature and I would have read it, if required. .... but, voluntarily, I don't think I'll be checking that one out from the library anytime soon!

As far as great Russian writers, I found Turgenev to be much more readable, his short stories are great and his novel Fathers and Sons was easy to read. I also have not read War and Peace, but always keep meaning to. Doubt I ever will though!

I am reading a very adventurous book right now. It is the deception Point by Dan Brown. Its a very thrilling story with suspense at each and every point. So I am quite enjoying it. I have read a few absurd books also. I started a book and was trudling along with it but with the end also it was the same case. So beware of such cases.

Yes. I just hope this book goes somewhere soon. I was not able to read much during the Christmas season and I'll pick it back up soon. I have heard that Deception Point is a great book. Maybe I'll check it out. Thanks:)

Yes!! I'm stuck with a book.. for months now.. And I'm still only on page 20 something... The thing about it, there's another 2 volumes to the book that I need to read in order to finish the whole story!! The book that I'm trying to read is Romance of the Three Kingdoms.. Yes, it is history but it's a really interesting history to read, but I'm unable to read it as it's too confusing at times.. Sheesh..

I just looked up your book online and found that it is the most popular novel ever in Asia. Sounds pretty deep. Are you reading a recently updated version of it? Or the original?

Yes, I've been trying to finish this book called "Washington", its a Christian fiction romance book, I like reading those alot, its one of those books that have 4 stories in one, well I made it to the 3rd story and thats where I stopped, for some reason I just can't get into the stories that good, I guess they're kinda boring. I put the book down a couple months ago and haven't picked it back up, I'm not sure I ever will, in fact I read another book since quitting that one...lol.

Oh, I've read a few of those 4 book Christian combo things too. Sometimes there is one or two great stories in there but the others are duds. I'm not sure I've read one that had 4 great ones in them, have you? Thanks:)

I know, most of the books begin on a good note and then somewhere in between they loose track and are unable to hold the reader. I think the writer should concentrate more on the mid section of the book as compared to a flossy start as the mid section of the book tends to take the interest away from the reader.

I agree. This one is just plodding along. Maybe some of the details I am learning in the middle will be crucial to the ending, but in the meantime, I am starting to lose interest.

I am reading a book by Iris Johnsen that I can't get into. I guess because it isn't about the same people that I have read about in the past from her other books. I have gotten bored with this book. I like Nicholas Sparks myself. Although I haven't read this book yet.

I finally DID finish it. The last couple of chapters were very moving. When I brought up that it was slow-moving for most of the book to the book club group, they admitted that it wasn't the best choice for my first Nicholas Sparks book. I won't give up on him. I'm hoping to get a copy of The Notebook to try next.

I am a big Star wars fan and I love reading the Star Wars books. There was a 3 book set that i was trying to read and no matter how far I read I just could not get into it. I got through the first book and started the second. that is when I realize "I cannot get all those hours that i spent reading back". So I stopped reading it. Maybe the teaser on your book is not about what setting the book is written, rather it stating that it will span years for you to be able to get through it. :)

I started one by Dean Koontz but I haven't gotten more than 50 pages of it so far and have left it for a Stephen King book which I have almost finished already.. Dean Koontz has a way of describing things too long and too much.. I don't like for an hour to drag out to 25 pages, when it does I get bored.. I can't even think of the name of the book that I started and quit, but it was Dean Koontz.. Don't get me wrong, I do love his writing but some of his books get on my nerves and I give up on them..

I did use to enjoy Dean Koontz much more than I do now.. However, the last book of his that I read had way too much time and words put into sections of the book that would have been better enjoyed with fewer words.. So, I stick with Stephen King, I am in the middle of Duma Key now and can't wait to finish it.. That is what I like in a book, when I can't wait to get comfortable and start reading it again.. Have a great day..

I've only read one Koontz novel. I believe it was "Intensity". It had a great unexpected twist in the end. Really Creepy!

Koontz is similar to King in many ways, in the creepy horror sort of way. My very first Koontz novel was "false memory" and if was full of plot twists, sadly I have not enjoyed any of his subsequent books nearly as much.

I have to give you credit for getting 2/3 of the way thru a book that hasn't grabbed your interest. I read 3 or 4 books per week, and maybe once or twice a year I come across one that I either can't get into, or is so transparent that you've pretty much figured out the story's ending. Usually, if a book hasn't grabbed me by the time that I'm 1/4 of the way through, then I move onto the next book. You must be feeling obligated to finish it by now....I give you lots of credit!

You are a heavy reader! Quite impressive! You are right. I'm feeling obligated. I'm also curious because there are two fans of the author in the group. They are both people I admire and would assume then that there must be something to this book. So far, I'm not impressed. I can assume by the description of his other books that this is going to have some sad or tragic event happening soon in the story. Still patiently waiting! Thanks:)

Wouldn't you laugh if some day these other two fans tell that the book bored them to tears? With the anticipation of something sad coming up, I hope the book at least has a happy ending for the trouble. Sometimes you do get pleasantly rewarded for the trouble. I just finished reading The Alienist by Caleb Carr. I can't tell you how many times I've started that book over the years, then put it aside. My new years resolution last year was to read it, and I finally did (waiting until last minute, of course). After I got past the spot where I gave up each time...I actually enjoyed it. I may even try the sequal...lol

I have three books started right now that have not kept me interested. Every now and then I will pick one of them up to see if I can finish it but I always put it back down after a page or two. This is unusual for me because most of the time I can devour a book in one sitting. I normally read anything science fiction but these particular books are so far out there I think the author must have been on LSD when he wrote them. There isn't a defined story line that I can follow. And the science is sooo fictional that it could never be possible.

Along the same lines as your original posting, I have set an unofficial goal for myself to go back, and read some things that are considered "classics". At the moment, I am reading the Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. Although I enjoy the story and the subject matter very much, there's a lot of slang, and dialogue that I can not relate to or understand. I'm on the verge of giving up, as I am not doing it for a book club or any other reason besides my own enjoyment. I hate, to give up on a book, but sometimes, reading it becomes a chore. As others have already said, I have alternated between reading it, with other things that I enjoy better, however I still have a third of the book to go. Nine times out of 10 I will finish the book no matter what, I figure, I've invested this much time I may as well continue. However, this one is a close call and so I can relate to your posting but I just can't bring myself to "give up" on a book before I've finished it. Good luck to you and happy Mylotting!

Our group is going to be mixing it up a bit every month. We will be including some classics (our first book was "A Christmas Carol"). I really like that it is an "assignment" for me to read and therefore I will be less apt to give up. I love the idea of sharing ideas too. Especially with classics, since others may be able to dissect the sections I've had difficulty with.

Hello! I had tried to read books that were very complex. Usually, the classical books of Portuguese literature have words that goes beyond knowledge. I'm sure that you can only find one person out of a thousand Brazilians that would know the meaning of all the words in a classical book here. The words that are on those books cannot even be translated to English! So hard, you cannot understand the story because the words used are really troublesome. When I tried, I had to have a dictionary by my side, and in each sentence I'd have to search for the meaning of at least one word. Imagine how does that feels... I read, read, read, and the story seemed to be nice, but it was too much work to read it. I gave up. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

I was reading Online Marketing Heroes. There are stories about how certain companies on the web make it big! But after a couple of stories, I soon got bored. In fact, the book is still lying on my bedside table. I'm giving up on the book and putting it on the shelf, until I pick it up again at a later time.

Well, I might get shot down for this one but, there is one thing that I 'tried' to read but couldn't get myself past the first few pages, which I was already forcing myself to read through them, hoping it'd get better.. which is Harry Potter! -w- man, that was a real drag.. I guess fantasy needs to stay visualized =P But other than that, I mostly read either classics or detective and mystery books (which are categorized as classics too, anyways =P), and these are probably the only types of books I could read on without having them become draggy or boring ^w^ I just love these stuff

I have read some books that do seem to drag on. Then you reach a breaking point and unless you are reading the book for school or a book club you just give up. I have reached that point of several books some of them have even been recommended by book clubs. I know that I read one that just seemed like it would never reach a good point and it never did after reading the first one hundred pages and finding out that the plot had not changed from the begining and that the book was still introducing characters that had no bearing on the outcome it got very boring. However, some of the books that I have read did improve over time, but those were very few and far between.

i generally read fiction and that too best sellers. so i dont have any problem with them because they are generally very interesting..( thats the reason they are bestsellers).. my brother gave me a book which is non-fiction.. its a book which says some of Einstein's theories are false.. im not a science kind of guy. and there were loads of scientific terms which were hard to understand. but the book was very interesting because it had many facts about the universe and the system. i couldn't put it down but also couldn't understand many of the points. so i struggled and worked my way to the end. i think i want to read it again. maybe il understand some points now. thank you

I love to read Clive Cusslier novels. Dirk Pitt and Kirk Austin adventures. They are so boring to start off with, because you get a history lesson. Once the adventures kick in, they are hard to put down.
