No fireworks last night due to a horrible wind storm. Did you see fireworks?

Sadly, this is the first year I can remember where I did not see fireworks coming from our local TV broadcasts covering New Year's Eve. We've had them every year, no matter whether the weather was dry (and cold) or wet (and cold).
But, about 3 days ago now, I guess we've been having a massive weather front coming through that either stalled in place or it was the jet stream raising a ruckus. We've been having wind gusts of 50 miles per hour here in Winchester, VA.
We (my husband, my oldest son and I) were watching Richard (myLot won't allow me to type in his nickname!) Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve last night and, right after the ball dropped, announcing the New Year, confetti was flying in every direction, meaning they, too, were in the midst of this windy front.
But, no fireworks. How sad! Because of certain medications I must take I'm not supposed to drink alcohol so I couldn't even get drunk enough to say, "Aw, who cares?"
Did you see fireworks at midnight last night? If you did, where were they? Were they as good as previous years or do you think they were under par because of the recession? Did you enjoy your celebrations last night?

You know it's funny you mentioned missing fireworks because for the first time in years we missed them as well. We live in Australia and there were no weather problems here; we just decided to have a little party at home and didn't go out like we have previous years so we didn't see any fireworks. Sad. We had a good time anyway.

[i]Hello mentalward,
That's too bad. We don't have a good weather here during the New Year and we have a lot of fireworks going up. That's why we did not see any fireworks during New York countdown. CNN did not say anything about any firework and so I guess it's not part of the celebration. We are awake until 1PM. We sleep when the different fireworks display stop. It is nice and entertaining. Maybe next year you will have a very good fireworks display.

One of the things I love about my house is that there's a park just outside my bedroom windows. For New Year's Eve, there was a concert there, wit some really good local bands and a wide range of musical styles, followed by a beautiful fireworks display. Not only was it all wonderful; I enjoyed it just by opening the windows, and the screens kept the bugs out. I turned off the AC, but kept fans on, because it was hot out, and just really enjoyed it all!

I did not see the fireworks but I heard them, I was in bed by 10pm new years eve because I was really ill. I gave up smoking on the 27th dec and I developed like a flu, I could not walk, ached, ill, could not eat or drink and shivering cold even though I was hot to touch, I missed a party invite too because I was so ill lol!!

The atmosphere was electrifying here. Not only because of fireworks but also for those traditional whistles from the nearby port with people engaged in group dancing even in the streets till late hours of the night.
At times, I was just confused. Are they aware of recession? Or, they were in a mood to ignore all stresses? Somehow, it looked like nobody was ready to spoil that night irrespective of the recent happenings - the economic meltdown, job losses etc.
Or, might be they wanted to keep their spirit high for fighting out all odds that may await their fortune in 2009!
I was confused!!!

I stayed at home so I did not see any fireworks display but I could hear them in the background. In my country we have fireworks display every weekend that I do no longer appreciate and enjoy wathcing them. For me they are a nuisance.

That wind storm must be pretty bad to cancel the fireworks display in your area! It was a bit rainy in the morning of the 31st here in Singapore but by night time the sky was clear. We watched the fireworks on the TV countdown and they were amazing I just found the sort of classical music that accompanied the broadcast a bit weird! LOL. I wish i could experience an actual countdown live next time rather than just watching it on tv. Hope your new year celebration was a great one despite the no fireworks

well i am lucky this year. cause this i my first time to see fireworks closely on new years eve. i have spent my new years with a friend away from home. so just i can witness this fireworks in my life. and yes, i was in streets of our city to witness this firework display when the clock striked 12 am of january first, i was too happy. but it was not all fireworks. there was television program first before that new year's eve. so we were able to see some of my favorite local actors on the stage. of course, with large gathering of people, i could hardly see the faces of my favorite celebrities. anyways, i still able to recognize their faces from a far. not close enough to appreciate looking at them.
well though i was not satisfied eating on the new year's eve cause the fod outside is quite expensive. but i was able to buy some street food that are still clean and cheap. i treat my friend with local tofu cream and mine i had some tofu meat with rice and tofu milk. it cost me about $2 in all. not that much.

It was too cold for me to venture out to the city to see our yearly display for 1-1
But I did see some small ones that neighbors were shooting off at midnight. The City of Minneapolis had their show even with the below zero temps. I am not sitting in that cold to see them ever. I have never really celebrated New Years personallyu. It is just another day is all to me. No real historic significance to be a National Holiday in my eyes. I have not drank for almost 18 years so no bars etc for me either. My wife worked till 10 then we watched thye celebrations on TV till midnight is all.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

There is usually fireworks all over the place here, no matter how cold. But we've had terrible wind here too, so besides a few we saw when I was picking my daughter up from work, there's wasn't much. No gunshots, no cannon blasts... we're rural so we get all kinds of things shooting off at midnight. But it seems that everyone stayed inside last night.

I did see a few fireworks in the background from Times Square, but it wasn't coming from downtown. I forgot where they said they were going off. But it only lasted a few seconds. There wasn't any shown at 12 on our local stations, either, which is very unusual. I thought all of those coming from overseas were beautiful! Oh, I did see those coming from the sides of the building.
But, did the ball actually DROP last night? I never saw it and my eyes were on the screen constantly when the Clintons mashed the ball. I thought they said the ball would stay at the top this year.
This is the first year we didn't do fireworks. My daughter's two youngest sons are usually here on New Year's Eve, but they went home. My husband didn't bring them back yesterday when he came home. They are growing up and doing their own things. The youngest chose to stay with Mom and she bought him fireworks and they got out a few times and shot them. That excites him. And he got to shoot them all and not share with the other kids.

That's a bit sad, not to have fireworks, but I just hope you still had a nice celebration without it. In our place, we were able to watch fireworks, although sometimes, some raindrops would fall, but it is still a blessing that it didn't really rain hard. And it's our first time to celebrate the new year in our home, coz usually we go to my parents' home or with my husband's siblings, but I enjoyed staying here at home while watching fireworks with my kids and hubby.

No didn't see any fireworks. Usually where I live the only time we have any fireworkds is on 4th of July. I don't think I have ever seen fireworks on new years. It would be neat to see though. Put a big bang into the new year!!
