It happened...Donald Rumsfeld resigned today. President Bush has put his support behind Robert Gates to replace Rumsfeld as secretary of defense. What do you think about this breaking news? Are you relieved, surprised, shocked? What about Gates nomination? We are certainly a nation in flux.

Yesterday, Bush said Rumsfeld would be staying, so I was kind of shocked also.

He actually said that last week that he was staying and bush said he said that because he didn't want to take away attention from the campaign.

Well I don't know if he resigned, if he was fired, but most of all it looks like he was forced out

At first I heard resigned, then I heard fired too. But I agree, something was certainly going on behind the scenes.

He's too power hungry to resign. He wants all the control and has pretty much said so himself. He would need to be impeached, but that process would take up the whole two years he has left. Lets just hope the Democrats can keep him reigned in some.

I think that George W. is trying to put a bandage on the problems he's created in this country after seeing the results of the vote on Tuesday. The democrats have now taken over both houses, so he's a true lame duck president. I'm glad, because I haven't liked what he's done at all, and I hope this new mix in Congress can keep him contained until he rides out his term.

Rumsfeld couldn't resign before the election because then the Democrats would accuse the President of manipulating the election. So, it had to be done the day after. As for Cheney -- who Bush also said he was not firing -- I said back in 2004 that he would resign in 2004 so that the new VP could run for President in 2008.

Yeah, it is a very interesting situation. That is a valid theory on Cheney though.

I don't know whether Rumsfield did a totally horrible job or not. Compared to whom? Would Gates do better? Personally I don't know enough about the man to say yes. Definitely blunders have been made....like the abuse scandal. I do think the female was the scapegoat in that. Definitely! But I do think Bush is a back stabber, and would do anything to make himself look good. What I don't understand is why we are still in Iraq. I really hope we don't go into Iran!

I don't know if Gates will do better either, but I have to hope he does. I sincerely think our nation needs a drastic turn-around before it is too late.

Donald Rumsfeld resigning is one of the greatest things that could happen for this country. His departure, combined with the Democratic takeover and the Baker panel's recommendations, are really going to change the occupation of Iraq in a profound way - finally we're going to start seeing the end of the tunnel. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Rumsfeld resigning will save the lives of hundreds of our troops, and perhaps thousands of Iraqi civilians. If you're at all pro-life, you have to appreciate that.

We can certainly hope that Gates won't follow in Rumsfeld's footsteps...or that the Democrats will be able to rope in the Republican mess. I really want to believe this is a turning point for our country and our troops. I pray it is. Bless you.

Yes the Republicans certainly came out on the bottom of the pile after the elections. All we can do is watch and see what happens. Thanks for replying.

I think rumsfeld was controlled by bush and then when the democrats won bush said it's time to go. We all know resigning is basically i got fired when you have a job like this. Not a hole lot is gonna change until bush says are troops can come home. Unless he sends them to afgan where the real enemy is. There is not much anybody can do when the troops are still there because the people in iraq can't be controlled. All i can say is i wish 2008 was here for we can have either the first female president or first black president & a better change for this country.
