There is nothing like summer peaches in the winter

I am sitting here enjoying some wonderful sliced peaches over ice cream, not canned peaches from the store either. These are the peaches we sliced and froze this summer. Summer peaches in the winter are the best! Do you can or freeze summer fruits and veggies?

Peaches are awesome :) We don't have a peach tree, yet! But we do have apples, blackberries, and blueberries. We froze a bunch of them in ziptop bags, but you can also can, make jam, jelly, chutney, etc etc. It's really an effective way to have off season fruit. Especially if you get it locally and not the out of season greenhouse stuff...

I made sweet red pepper jelly this year. Not from home grown, but it was still good, once I got the knack of boiling it long enough to get it to gel. I mix the batch that did not gel with brown mustard for a wonderful spicy sandwich spread.

I do not can or freeze fruits or veggies. I have in th epast when I grew my own stuff. But now it is hard to keep anything in the freezer. I can't wait til income tax to be able to fill it up again with meats.

I am hoping that the IRS does their job this year and intercepts my ex's tax return. They were supposed to last year but they didn't. I won't be getting mine this year cause the small amount i would get will in all likelyhood be intercepted to pay off my student loans. So in February I am going to take one of my paychecks and go to the commissary and load up on meats for the freezer. That is the cheapest place to get meat here. I want to try to go again in March and do the say thing so that during my off season we will have meat on hand.

Not any more, because we "summer" a long distance from where we "winter" and it is too much trouble to carry the freezer around. Do you think you could e-mail some of those lovely summer peaches? Lol!

Hey sweet! Now that does sound yummy! I don't like certain fruits that are canned. They just don't have the same flavor as fresh. How do you freeze fruit? I have never tried to do it! I would love to freeze my favorite, cantoloupes so I could have them anytime I felt like it during the year! Is it possible to just freeze any fruits? I have no idea because I don't know anything about canning or processing or freezing fruits.

You can freeze most all fruits and melons. To freeze a cantaloupe or other melon you just scoop it out with a melon baller put sure fresh and clear water (instructions come with sure fresh) and place in freezer bags and freeze. I love freezing and canning fruit. Makes a tasty treat for later.

Peaches I love peaches they are my favorite fruit. I live in Colorado and we have some of the best peaches here. We call them Palisade Peaches. They are so sweet and melt in your mouth. Now that you mention it I have some in my freezer to. Guess I know what I will be making tomorrow. Peach Cobbler with home made vanilla ice cream. Yummy thinking about it makes me want it now.

I do not get as much done as I should. Did not have peaches this year. I figure each year I will do better. I actually froze grapes this summer, though, because I had so many.

Usually we end up using the canned ones from the stores. However sliced peaches that you buy from the green grocer are much more healthier and tasty than the canned ones. I think freezing fruits will help you save money later on. You can buy them when they are cheap and use them later on, instead of buy the canned ones which are full of additives and preserves. I don't buy the ones in the cans at the store unless I am going to make a cobbler. I don't like the taste of them straight out of the can. To me they tend to taste like the can lol. I try to freeze some peaches when we get them in the summer. This year I am going to buy enough to can some also.

The only peaches I like are fresh from the tree. I'll eat canned but only in jello or some other fruit salad. I've got all kinds of veggies in my freezer from either my garden or the neighbor's.

Just reading your discussion makes me want some summer peaches. Yummy! I didn't freeze anything from the summer this year and now I am wishing I froze some peaches. I will have to remember to do it next summer. Canned peaches are just not the same.

Oh yeah! I have some peaches from our tree in the freezer. I keep thinking I need to take some out and make a pie or a cobbler with them. This discussion may have just inspired me to do so.

Over Christmas we had some delicious summer cherries which I'd preserved in port. Superb! I have to agree, preserved fruit out of season is wonderful, and particularly so when you have preserved it yourself. It transports you right back to when you picked it. Enjoy your peaches!

Not anymore. I used to can tomatoes. I'd buy crates of them and can them. A lot of work, and well worth it. But after I had to work 6 days a week I gave up. I couldn't do both. I do have a lot of frozen strawberries. Those are so delicious during the winter!!
