my first day of working experience

It was my first day to work as a nurse. I was nervous at first because I knew that this would really be a different world from what I had been used to, a student nurse before. I didn't expect that working would be hard because you will really have to do things on your own and deal with stuffs alone. And I have this feeling that I'm not that prepared to handle this situation.
By the way, nursing in our country has a huge population so it is close to impossible to find a job where you will be paid. So most of the graduates including myself, works as volunteers. Without pay that is, just for experience.
Oh my, I think I have to refresh myself and be prepared before going to work next time.
Have you had this same feeling too? How was your first day of work?

I have been a student nurse myself, but I became ill and I never finished the education. I can imagine how you are feeling, working as a nurse must be very different from being a student, and you suddenly have to deal with everything on your own. I think that the feeling that you are not prepared to handle the situation is pretty common, at least that is what I have heard from other nurses. Please don't get discouraged, I am sure you'll handle it just fine once you get used to the situation.
I have had many different jobs, but they have all been confusing in the beginning, because there were so many new things and so many things to remember. Once I was working as a kind of nurse (there is no word for the job in English, but it is like a nurse, just on a more basic level) On my first day 3 of my co-workers were ill, and everyone else was very, very busy, because there weren't enough people to do the work. I didn't get any introduction at all, I was just given the keys and a list of the patients that I was supposed to visit. I didn't know the patients or the streets, so I needed a bit of extra time, but instead I was given a couple of extra patients. I managed to visit everyone, but I have never been so stressed in my life, and I was sad because I didn't think that I was able to do my job properly, I was way too busy. I will never forget my first day, but the job was great once I got used to it.

It's definitely that initial learning curve that's the hardest. My wife's first day as a teacher was today, without any formal training and in a foreign country, and the head teacher said, "there's your class" and left her to it! Talk about winging it. And my wife's not the type to wing it. Worse, she is teaching 12 different classes in 4 different schools, all of different levels. It seemed a much simpler job when she first agreed to it!

Thanks for the advice porcospino. ^__^ I truly appreciate it. And I think that if we get used to doing a thing, we could probably go on with it. Continue doing a great job. ^__^

[i]Hi iced,
When I got my first then second as well as third job before, I was very lucky to have a friendly, supportive and helpful co-workers and it was fun for me....I was not very confident at first but they assured me that everyone feels that at first and less than a month, i was able to put myself right on the track!
I know you can do that..Just focus and be positive!

hello icedcoffeemallows, as we get our of school or as fresh graduates we always have this feeling the we are invincible and that we are ready to face the real world but this is not always the case. No matter how brilliant a student we are as we join in the real world that is when we realized that we are not well equipped and we need to learn so much so that we become ready to face the harsh realities of life and the challenges that comes within. I wish you the best in your job and learn as much as you can for a greater and greener pasture in the future. A good working attitude will help a lot to succeed.

I'm a nurse too! I agree that it is really impossible to have a work as a nurse in the Philppines because of huge population of board passers twice a year. Good thing you got a job. I started in a training program that I paid and they absorbed me and now I was assigned at OR/DR area and I'm currently signed for a contract. I hope that when my contract is expired, I can renew it or better yet I can be on probationary so that I have a work continously and I'm at home with the people around me. I hope they find me good for my assigned job so that on evaluation day, I have a good reviews from them. And I hope you will have a continous work at the hospital you're working with. Goodluck!!!

Hi there, it was nice meeting you here. ^__^ Sharing the same sentiments. Hehe. But I'm happy hearing that you have a work and being assigned in the OR was one of my favorite duty. I don't know, may be because of the cases and excitement of seeing the procedures done in real life. Wish you all the best. Go nurses!

hi icedcoffeemallows!
let me guess??? you are filipino right?
anyway, i just feel bad that nurses--after hurdling years of study, spending times on duty, and then reviewing for and taking the board, they have to work as professional volunteers in hospitals. to make matters worse, they have to pay the hospital to volunteer. the system is really abusive!
anyway, i have been hospitalized twice this december, and i have talked with the several nurses that have been on duty while i was there. and indeed, some of them come from different cities and have to pay board and lodging. it is so sad that nurses have to come to that.
that is why i can't blame them for wanting to go to the united states or other foreign countries that pay them more--because they are abused here in our own country.
sigh...
i just wish you the best in your job. take care and God bless you! :-)

hello spoiled, thanks for commenting. ^___^ yeah the situation of nurses here in the Philippines is really not good. And yes you're right about the fact that though some nurses are payed for their jobs, their salary is just enough for them to pay the place where they live. Very sad situation. Take care and God bless you too. :)

What´s up everyone!
Well, about your story iced, my first day of work was when I was like 12 years old, so now I´m acostumed ( No se como se dice en ingles, es acostumbrado, soy mexicano haha). First of all, let me give you some tips, at fist it will get harder and harder, but when you find the light that makes you be in that work, like helping people, you will gain joy doing it, so it will make it easier.
Another tip is that you make friends in the work, making your boss a friend is a goood idea, makes you get promoted rapidly, you earn more, and you got a good relationship, any other friend there helps you to relax and take the job like school.
But never forgive this, Work is not all in life, so if you get fire, not worry, there are always another job.
And for my story, i started Cleaning cars, and as I told you, I make friends, show my abilities at a computer, and here I am, in an office, with a great computer, doing Sketchs and Drawins for my company :)
Hope this helps you

My wife started her first day today as well, teaching English as a foreign language to about 200 French primary school students in France where we live. She's in her 40's but it's been 20 years since she taught college kids for one year and hasn't taught anything since. She hasn't taught young children before, hasn't even been in a classroom with them. She has no formal training in the field - her qualification is that she's English and willing to try. And she's picking up where another teacher left off.
So it was a pretty overwhelming experience for her to say the least. She's completely exhausted - and it's only the first day! And it's "only" a 12-hours/week job! Yet she's also exhilarated because she's trying something she's always wanted to try. I think she could relate to you very well. Good luck tomorrow!
