The difference between standby and shut down is that in the Standby mode you are putting the computer into sleeping mode. The Pc turns off the display, stops the hard-disk drive, and turns off other internal devices so that the computer uses less battery power. The computer does need to reboot again. The computer resumes from where it has left.
When you shutdown your computer you are closing all programmes and applications.

I usually shutdown my computer after i use it. Because if your computer in standby mode, it still consume little power, But if you shutdown tour computer, your computer will totally turned off. so, it doesn't consume any energy again. The only benefit of stand by is you can start your computer quickly.

I simply shut down my PC, when done with. I do not believe in wasting precious and expensive electicity. Keeping the PC in stand mode is not good, as elecricity is consumed in the process and it is we who have to pay the bilss.

I hate standby. I either leave it on or turn it off. I think the most annoying thing to me is when I'm sitting down in front of the keyboard, just about to use the computer when suddenly the standby turns on. That just drives me absolutely nuts.

I don't understand what your trying to say. Standby is NOT the same as shut down. In standby mode your memory is preserved because your computer still needs to be powered to maintain it, however, shutting it down means that you can unplug it from power supply without any consequences. Plus, not to mention, in standby mode you just start from where you ended, but when your shutting down, you might have had to do it to trigger some changes or to reconfigure modules that run under your OS.
I don't use any of these options, since they're useless. Instead, hibernation, imho, is one of the best ways you can silent your system. You will need some additional hard drive space, since your memory is stored on it and picked later when your starting up the system. The good thing about it is that you can plug your computer of the power supply and nothing will change. Something like that...

For me, it better if we shut down the computer. In this time snd economy situation we are asking to be save power and money. If we don'nt shut down maybe we wil be shut from the company.

I usually just leave mine on. There seems to be some random problems when stand-by is used. I like to be able to have things available when I need them. I reboot every once in awhile.

I put my laptop on sleep mode during the day if I know I'll be coming back to it. I like the fact that the computer looks as though it's off but when you return to it you can just continue where you left off a and all your sessions can still be opened. Last thing at night I like to shut it down completely.

I always shut down my computer when I'm not working on it. I've never used stand by because I don't see the point of it when you can just shut down the computer. Yes, it's quicker but it still uses up electricity.

If I am not going to use my PC for quite a long while, I would rather turn it off than put it on a standby mode. That will give the PC and its components a complete rest and let it cool down. I have two PCs at home, but the one I am working on doesn't seem to work well on standby. Whenever I try and put it on this mode, the PC goes to sleep but when I try and wake it from standby, it reboots itself instead and whatever I had open is gone, so there's no point of me using the Standby mode.

It is always good to restart your PC from time to time and so some routine maintenance on it such as a disk defragment and clear your temporary files outs. All of those things are designed to help your PC run a bit better.
You won't of course be able to let it just run all day and night and expect it to run as fast as it did when you first bought it.
Standby is just in like a hibernation state, although your system is on, it is considered to be asleep, at least until you move your mouse, and then it will wake up.
But you haven't allowed your system to stretch and yarn if you don't restart it from time to time or shut it down completely let it sit for 10 minutes or so and this power it back up.
If it is doing a lot of weird things, then you might want to get some virus protection software.

Hi, well, i prefer Shutdown and sometimes i hibernate my PC...
Difference of shutdown and standby is that Shutdown switch off your PC completely and your RAM is not used, that is, all data on your RAM card is erased (it should be for better performance).
Standby use the RAM card to store your data so that when you turn on again your PC, all the information is still here and have not vanished...
As for me, i uses Hibernate the most.... this type of shutting down as for me i think it's the best as I may unplug my PC and also when i turn on my PC all my data is still alive.... the system is that it stored the data on my Hard Disk and erase them from my RAM card.....
any questions???, bye, take care, have a nice time.... :)

hmmm...
i like to let my computer on stand by mode because it is really easy to turn it on back since my computer is a very slow when it comes to start up. but i prefer more to let my computer idle for hours because i like download things. so if i put my pc in stand by mode, it will stop downloading...
