The best free antivirus program?

Finland
January 6, 2009 11:02am CST
What is the best COMPLETELY free (no trials or anything) antivirus program that has good internet virus blocking properties, like warnings when a site or download contains virus or when some site is trying to put a virus on your computer, and the basic protection, you know, spyware protection and that stuff. I'm currently using avast! and avg but both are only free when you use a trial version and I'd like to be fully protected with only one program. If there are no good free virus programs, then which program is the best, no matter what the cost is?

I have AVG free. I have had good luck with it. Many computer sites say it is one of the better free programs.

Yeah, it's one of the best or maybe the best free program out there but I'm looking for more features than AVG free has...

Im using AVG 8.0 right now and i think it performs much better than expected. Try also Avira. Always update your anti virus database.

Hi IronMaiden! My husband has been using AVG for a long time now. I guess, he is happy and contented with it. I just don't know how much he paid for it. Take care always. lovelots..faith210

Hi dear friend! Yes, I do think it is within a limited time only and sure enough, I would also wish to have a lifetime free antivirus program..actually, I would very much welcome anything for free especially right now. haha.. lovelots..faith210

I have understood that you can only buy limited time from AVG and I'd like to get a lifetime antivirus program with only one payment, of course free would be even better But I guess I want too much features in order to get something for free

You will not get the thing you are looking for completely free. All the free but good antiviruses offers limited protection, and a meagre firewall. To get actual protection, the way you want, you will have to buy an antivirus. Nod32 is good. It gives immediate alerts about viruses, and others. But I am sorry I do not know the price. There is a suggestion. Whatever antivirus you buy, do not buy that online, try buying that yourself from some known shop.

Yeah, I've also noticed that there ain't a thing like I want, free with all the features But Nod32 sounds good, gotta check the price out. And thanks for the buying tip!

Gasp! So many responses. Add me to the list of people that said AVG or Avast. They say that the free antispyware programs are actually better than the ones you pay for. o_O From my personal experience, McAfee is a waste of money.

Avast is best, is fast. You all might not be knowing one feature of Avast. When Avast find some file which is infected but that virus detail it is not available, it will send that file to Avast site and in few days you will get antivirus update for that virus.Usually this feature can be obtain in paid antivirus software. So my vote goes to Avast.

Well I am using Avast software. It has a free antivirus and is very vigilant one even the license is free. It always detects virus unlike when I used AVG before my PC crashed and eventually I have to reformat but now that I have Avast they always warn me that they detect virus and so far I have no infection in my PC for quite sometime already.

Avast does have the option to delete, quarantine too. I do have one at home and its working okay for me. It has detected and removed many viruses from USB which my wife uses at work and home.

As Lavender_Breeze said, Avast and Comodo are perfect partner for your computer. But I am using BitDefender and Comodo.

That's the problem with Avast! for me, it only warns about the virus and doesn't have enough information for me so I don't what happens to the virus. I have seen a program which warned about viruses AND also had some kind of an option for deleting the virus or something like that. Also the free version of Avast! has only limited amount of features and I'd like to get some more...

great topic, i learned a lot here on free antivirus. seems comodo and avast is good based on the responses. i tried AVG but i'm not so confident with it. i'm currently using trial versions until they expire. teehee. the best paid anti virus apps for me however are kaspersky and bitdefender. ;)

I don't like AVG free very much either... Haven't heard about kaspersky but I was actually thinking of buying bitdefender internet security, seems like a really good program, everything I need in one program

Hey, Ok, I will firstly menttion the totally free ones. Firstly, AVG. AVG Free Edition only comes with Antivirus and Antispyware so it doesn't come with a firewall. Other than that, AVG isn't that bad but it isn't the best either. Other ones that you could try are Avast and Avira just like some other users have already suggested. There is only one thing, most of the free ones don't fully protect you. If you want to get one of the best TOTAL internet security, I would highly recommend to you either Nod32 or Kaspersky. Personally I use Kaspersky and Comparing to Norton and Windows Live OneCare, it doesn't slow down the PC and it finds and removes more viruses than both of them. But the only way to find out which one is the best for YOU is to try different ones out yourself :D Hope you find this helpful!

Thanks! I will definitely check those out! I also agree that AVG free has FAR too little features, you will easily get some type of virus if you use only AVG free...

If your internet provider provides free internet anti-virus which many do I would use that. If not avg is the way to go. Zonelabs firewalls pretty good to. I heard some good things about avast also.

Yeah, kinda. If you don't update, comes new viruses that you program can't block. But if you don't have something like spyware blocking on your antivirus, you get spyware pretty easily, no matter how much you update

Yeah, spyware is a very nasty thing to get on your computer...

As far as I concern, there is no "the best" anti-virus software regardless it's license (free, trial or full). I had used AVG free, but it didn't do a good job. It's update speed is awesome but it can't detect many viruses. So, I switched to Avira free, and I found out that it's more less like AVG free and it's another minus point is it's update speed is slow. Then, now I'm using Comodo Internet Security free (it has both firewall and anti-virus), and it's working great. I scanned my laptop with CIS and it found many viruses that both AVG and Avira didn't found. To make my laptop more secure, I installed Avast! Home Edition alongside SUPERAnti Spyware. Both are working great with CIS and all of them doesn't slow down my laptop as well as using small amount of resources. So, I suggest to you to use Comodo Anti-virus. You can go to their forum and see how the users says about Comodo product. Have a great life.

I think Norton is better. You need to pay for it and it is not free. I have used paid one and free one. I think the paid ones are more reliable and safe.
• Finland
11 Jan 09
Yeah, why would you have to pay for something if it would be as good as the free one Norton might be a little too big for me, I guess I'm gonna go with a program called BitDefender Internet Security or Kaspersky...

Alwil Avast! 4.6 Home Edition - Venerable Avast! is still free for personal use, and it's a relatively unobtrusive and capable virus stomper that will work well for just about anyone. A new feature adds a web proxy to the mix (which filters all traffic running through it for security risks), and it works will all major web browsers. It also recognizes non-virus threats like spyware and adware. Aviva AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7 - This has long been a capable and effective antivirus product, especially noteworthy for its fast operation.

Lately, I have downloaded the AVIRA anti-virus. I downloaded its free programs. I find it hard using AVG since I feel like AVG is consuming much of my pc memory when scanning.

I have been using Avira AntiVir free version for 5 years and now it is still of my shield. I have recommended it for other people and they are all very happy and never switch to other anti virus programme. Sometimes I got another computer, so I want to try others programme like AVG, Avast but then I have to switch back because Avira is far better from those in terms of detection rate and pc resources it uses. I also have the campus license for McCafe, a commercial anti virus progamme, which allows me to use McCafe for free, but I still use Avira AntiVir free version. Please download the 2008 summary report from av-comparatives.org for more information and find out how Avira AntiVir is much better than other programme.
