My husband has been in one of those moods where he makes impulse purchases for me. Poor me, right?hehe Anyway, he just bought "The complete book for Backyard Bird Lovers" and gave it to me yesterday. I love birds. I was excited to get the book. I haven't been able to do much bird watching at the house we currently own. None of the windows are properly situated for that. I still may set up a feeder this winter but I just wish I had a better place to view them.
Are you a bird watcher or feeder? What types of birds do you get? Do you feed them all winter (I hear that they will become reliant on your feeder)? Do you use a book to identify them? Do you use Binoculars? or is it right outside your window?

We are designated a back yard habitat so we pay attention to all the critters including birds that use our yard. We feed the Hummers in the spring and summer, we
have hawks and eagles which we don't feed. They will eat a house cat if the conditions are right. We have geese and ducks, white egrets, owls, robins, quail and many others. Our home has many windows on all sides which is fun for looking out but hard to heat and keep cool. But we love it here.

i am also lover of birds and animals.Nature in any form appeals to me.Putting feeder is a right option to attract birds .But now a days you do not get many birds to watch because of their disappearance due to towers being erected for mobile signals. The radiations coming out from these towers prove fatal for the birds.

no I don't but I do think that it is absolutely wonderful that you have such a loving husband. We don't have many kinds of birds around here, just sparrows and pidgeons.

That was nice of him....at least he thinks of you when he sees something you might like. I have a bird-feeder, its out in the yard, I used to have it right where I could look out the window, but we moved it, I may have to move it back. We get alot of cardinal's, male and female ones, alot of starlings, and once in awhile we'll see bluejay's. I try to feed them all winter but some days I forget, and they do get used to you feeding them, because when I forget to, they are always out there flying around looking for food. I have a bird watchers book too, but I haven't looked at it in awhile.

I love birds. I guess I get it from my Mom. She always like to watch them too. I have a bird feeder right outside my back sliding glass door so I can see it really easy. I also have a bird bath. I had a blue bird house on a light pole but we too the pole down and now I'm not sure where I will put the house. I need to figure it out before the blue birds come looking for it. We have a small pond too and we get herons and sometimes stork and other big birds. I love watching them.

I lived in the Town for eighteen years and moved to the country side just two and a half years ago. We did not get many birds in the town so I am really fascinated with all the birds in my garden.
I have a nice big kitchen window and I get to see out into the garden really well. I have a little tame Robin that follows me around when I go outside. Today I bought him "fatballs" to eat. I had no sooner hung them up when he came over to peck at them. He really surprises me that Robin.
He built a nest last spring in my barbaque. I just let him be and his partner 'for a short while', had two baby Robins. They have all gone now but hes still here. Infact hes always around.
We also get Thrush,s, Blue T*ts, Backbirds, Wrens and Sparrows. I put little nut feeders up in my side garden now for them as they do make a mess sometimes.
I never thought I would be into birds so much as I am and I hope to see some different ones this year. I have seen an eagle (well it looked like one) flying overhead but not in my garden.

Those impulse buys can be a good thing. At least he choose something you will like.
I am a bird watcher. I use to feed them but haven't since I moved. I haven't any birdfeeders or have anything set up to do so yet. But I do plan on doing so. I live in Florida. So, I get a range of birds. But it really depends on what time of year it is. I do wish to pick up a book that which would help me idenitify Florida birds and wildlife. I think my kids would enjoy the book just as much as I do. I have never used binoculars. As I look through my camera. Which can be used like binoculars. My problem is finding the birds whn I can clearly here them with all these trees in the backyard.

I do love birds alot. My dad has the feeders set up at his home and we go there and sit on his porch and its really nice to see them all. Its like a wildlife preserve over there lol He really loves the birds. He used to raise doves and he always makes sure that there is plenty of food for all the birds that come to his yard.

I love to watch birds, and I find them very fascinating.
I'm sure if you put a feeder on or by your window, they'll come to visit. I'm up on the second floor but I do have a huge tree right outside my bedroom window. One of the birds I like to watch, which most people do not like, are the crows. They have a unique family style and order and are extremely smart.
I use to work at a Garden center and there were always Red Tail Hawks flying around, and a small Falcon too. I couldn't wait until the middle of summer when I would see the mother, father, and baby hawks flying with them. I loved it. There was a big wooded area behind the garden center which is where they lived. Plus, we had alot of pigeons in the area, and this is what they fed on.
I feed them as much as I can next to my apartment parking lot. There is a small grassy (well full of snow right now) area and I'll throw the food there.

Isn't it fun watching the babies grow? They're so cute and boy, do papa and mama watch over them. Just precious to see.
I actually saw a hawk (Garden Center in the middle of the city mind you) attack a sick pigeon and eat it. It was like I was watching the discovery channel right in front of me, not that I'm all for watching predators kill other animals, lol! Usually I have to turn away when lions kill and all that jazz, but this was so cool.
If you ever get a chance, keep an eye on the crows/ravens too. They are completely fascinating, although alot of people won't agree. I often wondered if crows were white instead of black, would people like them? Makes you wonder, hmmmmm?
Anyway, that was so very sweet of your hubby and tell him I said so. Guys like that are hard to find today. Take care and have fun!

I love hawks too! When we lived in Northern Michigan I spotted some Kestrels that generally stayed near a certain field on the phone wires. I would park my car and watch them . They can pick off other birds in the air by "dive bombing" them.
In that area there was a park that I took my toddler to. He would take a nap in the car after we played and I could sit and watch the Ospreys diving for fish there! I had never seen that before and it was awesome! Apparently Ospreys can be encouraged to nest on platforms and they had built one there on a light pole. I got to watch the babies in the nest get bigger over the weeks. I loved it!

We used to have feeders, but we were horrible about keeping it filled. We'd fill it then when it was empty it would take awhile to refill it, so the birds didn't rely on us much, and we didn't get any special birds because of it. Plus I thought it was a bit messy too. The seed would end up everywhere and the poop... ugh!
It is something I'd like to do again in the future, but probably when the kids are older. That way I don't have to worry about them messing with the feeders, and I'll have more time, energy, and money to keep the feeders clean and full.

i like some birds but we are infested here every year w/nasty old blackbirds. i use to keep a feeder out year round but it attracted those ol' nasty birds so i quit, it's also gotten very expensive to feed them. i love to see some of the birds but the blackbirds have ruined it for me plus the cost.

Hi there rocketj1
Aww how sweet of your husband! We don't get many birds around in garden as I think there are too many cats around and they seem to know it! I have tried to feed them in the past but the bread has been left out for days, untouched. I think that the birds that we have around here are mainly thrushes.

I have long been an amateuer bird watcher. I like to put a feeder up, but have a problem with pidgeons eating all the food and the little birds I want to feed do not get any food. so much so that i have stopped feeding them Back east it was the squirrels, here in the desert the pidgeons ruin the show. Any suggestions on how to feed the little birds , and NOT the pidgeons ???

I am not an avid bird watcher but on occasion I have been known to watch the antics of birds. Sometimes they are just so funny. I live in Colorado and we have a large varity of birds perhaps I should take up a new hobby for the new year. Glad you finally got a gift you would enjoy. Now if only my husband could do that. LOL.

Yeah, it's kind of like the 12 days of Christmas around here right now! I don't know what's gotten into him but I'm not going to argue about it, that's for sure! I'm not really a big time bird watcher but I think if I had a lot of time on my hands I could be. It's an excuse for me to enjoy nature! Thanks for your response:)

I love watching birds. Fortunately were I live I have lots of windows and a large tree and bush in front so there are always birdies in the windows. I would love to have that book. Here we get orioles. I had Never seen them before I moved to NM. Small house finches, ring neck doves, flickers, thrashers, chickadees, quails, red tailed hawks, turkey buzzards whitch by the way are HUGE, I was lucky enough to see a bald eagle once on a fence post on the way home from the store, big crows nest on the evergreen every year, in the spring we get humming birds, and somehow we have flocks of cranes but, I only get to see them flying overhead in a V formation becaus my dogs chase them away. I am sure there are a few I am missing but with the plethora of birds to see, I am blessed.
