Have you tried opening a MS Word file, then copy and paste the image into the word file.
Other option - open the image... press print screen button and go to Microsoft Paint and Paste it... remove all the unwanted bits... copy again and paste into word ;)
I think there are hundreds of other options as well...

I am supposed to type the entire data given to me in gif image format to text in word. Copying the paste wouldn't work

I would suggest this one... Read Iris Pro 11. It's not freeware but its really great. problem with OCR, they don't recognize sometimes the letters when the image is not clear. be sure to make the picture file clean. and double check the text document after it has been created.

You need to do an OCR(Optical Character Recognition) of that GIF image. The best OCR software available is Abbyy Fine Reader, but it is not a freeware. But if you want to do it only a limited times you can try the trials or demos from their site: http://www.abbyy.com/products/
I have used this piece of software myself and have accept that it is a very good OCR software.
