I do my major grocery shopping bi-weekly, so I was wondering if it would be easy for me to start using those re-usable cloth bags that they want to sell you at the checkout counters now. I have purchased three of them, but they are so small I can't imagine how many I would need to get my shopping done. I was in the store and I saw a woman pull out one of those bags and she had 10 bags that she was using altogether. I felt a little ashamed of myself for not even trying to go with this alternative since it seems it could be workable.
So how many of you use these re-usable cloth grocery bags? Do you find that it is just as convenient as the paper/plastic ones?

I try to use them not only for my supermarket trips, bit for other shopping that I do. I have several different sizes, I have almost a dozen. They are sturdy and easier to carry than the plastics and hold way more than any of those plastic ones. Besides when carrying the heavier items I do not have to worry about double bagging as those junky plastic one rip often.

Yes I have several as well. I take them to all the shopping we do as I hate using plastic bags. It is very rare that I will have a plastic bag now as I keep the other bags in the car.
I agree that they are much sturdier. I have had plastic bags break on me often with heavy items but the reusable bags are tough. I have been using them for years now.

We have about 8 of the Green bags, as they are over here, but a couple have seen better days. We also use cloth bags that one of the franchised bakeries gives away, and more recently have started using the cloth bags we get our bulk bread mix in. Those last are a bit narrow, so not suitable for everything, so we will get some more of the supermarket cloth bags next shop.
Apart from the environmental issues, we find them much easier. The handles often break on plastic bags, and also we ended up with half a cupboard filled with the damn things, and what can you do with that many? We use some as bin liners, saving money and recycling the bags, but there's only so many you can use that way. So every now and then we will have a shop without our cloth bags just to get bin-liners, but mostly we prefer the conveninece and ease of carrying with the cloth ones.

I have about 20 of them in the car different sizes and colours and brands and I love them. I no longer have all the plastic bags at home (well I do when I forget to put the reusable back in the car or go shoping for things other then grocery) but I have a lot less I would say I have cut down on plastic 90%.

We have been using cloth bags for years now. In fact some of them are so old they are starting to wear out. We also get our bread mix in a cloth bag and I remove the plastic lining from that and wash it. They make a reasonable shopping bag although they are a bit narrow but they are tough and it is good recycling.
I find the cloth bags much better than the plastic bags. They are more convenient and tougher. I would never go back to using plastic but I do have some plastic bags still in my house and I use them to line our rubbish bins.
I do not like plastic bags. There has been the odd time I have bought something and not had a reusable bag with me. We have all those plastic bags in our collection.

Sadly I only own one. I am like you...they are too small! But I do take mine when I am just getting a few things. So hopefully that counts for something! LOL

They say that every little bit counts. I think I will start keeping mine in a bag in the car. I might be more likely to actually use them!

i do own quite a few reusable enviro-friendly bags but i've never actually taken them to shopping with me, nor would i remembger to. But i do use those bags for other purposes sometimes instead of plastic bags, like when im going out and i don't want to take my handbag out, i'll just use those nice enviro-bags to keep like my jacket or water bottle in. They're quite convenient to use when you don't want to use plastic bags to carry stuff around.
On another note, i do reuse plastic bags that i get from grocery shopping. Which i guess isn't the best enviro-friendly thing to do, since im still using plastic bags, but i do think, at least im not using it once and chucking it out.

Yeah, reusable cloth bags are a very good and environmental friendly alternative to plastic, polythene or paper bags.
We in India, have been using this process since years.
You can also make them at home with old unusable cloths, denims, sheets etc. They look trendy, are easy to use and washable.
So. I'll suggest U to go for them!

In India most of the women use only the reusable cloth bag more than the plastic bag since they feel that only the cloth bag keeps the groceries safe and now only they have changed a bit to the plastic bags and in some parts of my place plastic bags are completely banned making them only get cloth or paper bags..i feel that paper bags are really a good option...we should really change into these bags than rather using the plastic ones which spoil our environment..Happy mylotting..

I used to work as a cashier and have seen people come in to the store with one bag and 20 or more items. They expected me to put the food in that one bag, and I was able to. I guess it depends on the store. I know that the bags we worked with weren't all that big. I don't think they were store logo'd bags, but I have seen bags with that logo on them before.
When you go to the store bi-weekly I would reccommend maybe two bags. One for the cold and one for regular non cold food. They can be careful with your foods, most stores have a recommended way to bag.

I use those bags all the time. At first it took me a little bit to get used to bringing them with me every time I went to the store but then I got in the habit and now take them every time. My store pays me a nickel for each one that I bring in. I save money to use them.

Plastic bags have long been banned, but in India people still use them.Carrying a cloth bag is out of fashion now a days and these are used rarely. But when i go for shopping i carry a very fancy cloth bag which is being made by me and it looks very fab and at the same time it is large enough that it can carry my weekly shopping.
I think it is a matter of convience when you go for shopping and clth bags are more handy and sturdier as compared to plastic/paper bags.

i think i have about 5 or 6 of that reusable bags (or may be more) and i always try to use them as much as i can... and they are definitely stronger and more convenient than plastic bags... i just think of the environment and try to do my bit to save the earth... take care and have a nice day...

I have a cloth bag that I use whenever I go shopping and I actually prefer it. I love not having all those plastic bags around and I love that the bag that I have is much sturdier than a plastic bag. I can fit just about all of my purchases in the bag that I use and it doesn't break or tear.

I haven't used them yet, but I will.
I do as much of my shopping at Aldi's as I can, and I re-use the paper bags until they are torn up and can't be used any longer. I only purchased a few of them for a nickel a piece, and one day when I was in there some lady had a bunch extra and just gave them to me. Don't have a clue why she didn't just save them for her next trip, but I'm thinking she didn't grasp the whole concept.
I haven't purchased any of the cloth bags, but I probably have one or two totes around here that would be suitable.

I don't use them. I think it was a ploy to sell non plastic bags to people to make money, but I'm being sarcastic.

I would like to use the bags, but I would just feel a little weird using them. I've never seen anybody use them before. I reuse the plastic bags anyway, so they are not really going to waste.

On the way into my grocery store there is a bin where used grocery bags are collected for recycling. I just take enough bags from there on my way in. Then I don't have to remember to keep my cloth bags with me. My store also gives a nickel discount (US money) for each bag I bring in on my own. Much easier then a cloth bag, good for the environment. Then I reuse the grocery bags at home for garbage bags.
