Snack Day!!!!

Well as a mother of 5 elementary aged children I have to send in Snack on my childs designated snack day. I have no problem with this what so ever, but do you remember when you were little and in elementary school our parents/grandparents/relatives, depending on who brought you up, were able to make cupcakes and cookies and send them to school and no one ever said no you can't do it. Now you can't, at least where I live. I know that they are looking out for the childs saftety and I realize that but I think that is a little extreme don't you!! I use to look forward to the day when I can bake something to take to school for my children when they were little now I'm reduced to buying expensive store bought pasteries and goodies and snacks. But I decided if I have to do that to at least not give the kids a sugar rush on my day of providing snackage. So today my next to youngest daughter went off to school with a bag of pretzel sticks. grrrrr. The frustration. So do you have to provide snacks to your childs classroom and if so what do you provide? Is your area/school district got a ban on bringing in food made at home? Do you feel that if you have to purchase the food might as well go healthy?

Next year I will be doing this. You can still take home made things but they have to health so that scratches cupcakes and cookies off the list. I guess i will be bringing alot of fruit. I guess thats a good thing though. I didn't even think about what parents could be putting into food if it is homemade. I don't think they would do that to their own kid but no telling around here. Some parents dont send their kids with coats on b/c they cant afford them and then some kids only meals are the ones at the school. So sad how some live. Anyway sorry getting off the subject.

unfortunately around here we have to have closed packages and they had to be store bought .. We are not allowed to send anything homemade. LOL!! I wish I was able to though.

The rules probably have been changed to this because of instances with people poisioning the foods, and also the ever growing peanut allergy and so many other alaergies. That does take the fun out of making personalized treats for your child and it is expensive to buy store brought snacks because you have to make sure there are enough in the package. I would go healthy also might as well give them a nutrious snack.

That is horriable!!!! See when I went to school we each brought our own snack. There was no "group" snack. I do remember the teacher having a few snacks in her desk in case some one forgot there snack or (that I remember) with one child his parents just never gave him one. Now we have to have group snacks because "every one has to have the same, it's only fair" what a pile of crap! I remember the days of switching snacks and bargining for the best one! My mom would buy a box of whatever fruit snacks or cupcakes and thats what I would have all that week. She didn't buy 3 different things so I had some thing different every day and that was okay because it ment that I could switch with (insert name here)! That was the fun of snack time!!! Now to answer your question- My step kids were allowed to bring in store bought individually wrapped snacks. YES they had to be individually wrapped. No going to the grocery store and getting fresh baked cupcakes or donughts! Nope they had to be wrapped seperate so no one touches any one elses food! Wow how things have changed!

See we can get cupcakes from the bakery as long as it is sealed. They don't have to be individually wrap thank my lucky stars because I might blow up.... I mean this is ridiculous I remember for my birthday my mom brought in cupcakes that she and my gram made .. Ok My gram made them my mom delivered them. LOL!! But that was the fun getting to bring in something that was fresh and homeade. I was warmth and happyness. grrr. Now it's commercialized ...

My son's school still lets parents send in homemade treats. His birthday is tomorrow, so on Monday he wants me to make a big bags of my toffee popcorn for him to bring to school for his class, so that is what I am going to do. I asked about homemade treats when he first started at this school because at his old school you had to send in store bought treats and snacks. His teacher was just like "Of course you can send in homemade treats. Why would you not be able to?"

ive never lived in any district where the parent was slated to send in snack for the entire class. just for their own child during snack time. the only time there have been any restrictions on what a child brought in for themselves.. was if there was a another child in the class that had a severe peanut allergy. so severe in fact that any peanuts in the proximity of said child.. theyd have a reaction and ave to go to the ER, so anything peanut at all wasnt allowed inside that specific classroom. thankfully this year.. my sprite is in a class where no one has any allergies at all..and i can send her in with whatever i choose. do i go healthy? meh.. sometimes. but im not real strict on what the content is for a snack.. theyre sposed to be "snack foods" and fun. so she gets a mixture of everything from fresh fruit to devil dogs depending on the day

What a bummer. That was part of the fun when I was a kid was helping my mom fix the snacks for the next day. We can still send in homemade here. I have two boys which were neve interested in "helping". As a matter of fact I didn't get the message until 9:00 the night before. But I guess that was the fun of it trying to whip up something quick! LOL The only thing here that has changed is they like for you to send fresh veggies or something healthy which I have no problem with. Pretzels sound like a good option but certainly not fun! LOL

At my school (which is not elementary but secondary one) students are advised to buy healthy food from the canteen, there is a health food policy which canteen owners must abide to. However we do not ban children form bringing food from home. I don't think that this is reasonable. (c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog

My child is only 2 years old so I don't have to send him to school yet. My mom is engaged to a man that has two children that are ages 8 and 12 and she said that she can't make goodies to send either. She has to buy anything that she sends. I don't think that she has to send snacks though. I know she is the room mother and when they have parties and stuff mom has to buy the stuff because nobody can make treats. I love to make goodies though so it's kinda sad that I won't be able to make stuff for the kids when my son goes to school. I do understand why they don't let you make stuff anymore though. It's sad that some people in this world have ruined that for the ones that love to make stuff. I do send snacks to the babysitters when I have to let my son go and he shares them with the other kids. I always send healthy stuff but she also doesn't care if I make the treats for the kids either.

I was really surprised when I was told that I couldn't bring in any homemade snacks to my son's classroom too. I was looking forward to making cupcakes for his class. That was awhile ago, he is now in high school. Just last year, I made cupcakes for my step-granddaughters class for her 8th birthday. They welcome them there. Funny huh?

Seems to me that these days all the fun is taken out of everything for kids. I am just glad that I was a kid when I was and not in todays world because it just seems rubbish to me and not a lot of fun like we used to have. My kids do not have snack days at school but just lately the list of things that they can take in for school trips and playtimes is getting more and more daft, and it will not be long before goodies are banned altogether.

you would not believe that I have a list of what is allowed and not allowed in class by certian teachers. LOL!! I find that daft. I understand that they are trying to be more health concious in this day and age but this is flipping ridiculous if you ask me..

Everything in school is completely different from when I went wayyyy back in the day! My mom would bake things for the class and we were able to take peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to school. I think that is extreme why you can't bake anything and let your children take it to school. Have a nice night

It is too extreme. What is next that schools can't make their own food they have to buy it sealed and nuke it?

You should write them a note and send it back with them when your kids bring the note home that the school wrote to you saying that you have to bring something for the kids and say that the school is going to have to supply the snacks because everytime you try to send something it's not allowed.

My fiance and I are not yet with child. I don't know if our area has this restriction but I hope not. Our county is a trusting place, so maybe not. I remember having snacks brought in, but I also remember that it was almost always bought, I don't think we had made goodies, atleast not me.. hmm..

I remember this when I was a young mom. That don't do that here where my grandson goes to school. If I was doing this now days I would mix it up. One time something healthy and the next something like a muffin or something. Kids get bored easily.

You know this whole thing of not letting moms and dads bake stuff for the kids an bake sales is getting out of hand I mean if the school is so protective of the kids an what they eat then why is it that most schools have to recall foods that are served in the cafeterias because e-coli has been spread around an all the kids are sick. They think it's safe because the food comes from the government well think again folks a lot of kids get sick because of tainted food. If the schools are so concerned about what the kids eat from bake sales they should be looking at their own school kitchens not in the moms an dads' homes.
