I did Jane Eyre at my college school in literaute, but believe me i have not read any romantic novel as Jane Eyre. Modern authors of Romance have not been able to compete with such a writer as Charllote Bronte. I have read this book for over 10 times yet i still read it with the same enthusiasm as when i read it the first time.
I dont think people in this century can love as jane or Rochester. I find it very difficult to believe that the love that these two people share is applicable in our lives. I doubt whether there are people who can love each other as portaryed in the novel. very few people understand what it means to love and to live upto the expectations of one's partner, yet we can learn from Jane that one love with one's whole heart, mind and soul.

I simple love this novel. I read it in high school on my own. Jane Eyre is the first romance novel ever. Bronte opened the genre and allowed other women to break into writing because of it. I think the love between Jane and Rochester is something we all come in contact with somehow someway.

I agree with you, I too read Jane Eyre but in H.S. It was for a english class and I have seen two version of it. For me it ranks as high as other love stories I have read. The lesson I learned was that love endures all challenges no matter what they are. Is there such love out there? I really don't know. I do know the book is good reading........

I think people thought differently in those times, they were brought up to believe in
strict moral values. The very problems they face would not exist in our times, at least
not where I live. Rochester would put his first wife in a home and divorce her,
and Jane would marry him without any bad conscience. But would they love each other
as much if there were no obstacles? And is there even love like that?

yes, i agree with you, jane eyre describes love in its purest form. today this love is nowhere to be found. though i believe there are still some few individuals in this world who try to share such love though they can never live upto what jane and rochester shared.

People had strict morals then, but not necessarily better... I mean look at how Jane is treated in her youth. That's not moral. Women also had basically no rights back then. Why is that more moral? I don't see why living back then makes your love more true or real...

I think the way people thought was different in those times. They were brought up to
believe in strict moral values. The very problems they face would not exist in our time,
at least not where I live. Rochester would put his first wife in a home and divorce her,
and Jane would marry him - or live with him - without any bad conscience. But would
they love each other the same if there were no obstacles? And is there even love like
that?
I do love Jane Eyre though.

I also read Jane Eyre for school. I wan't expecting to like it, but I really did. I don't read very many books that are romantic, so I guess I couldn't really say if it is one of the best, but at the least it is a classic. I'm sure there are other good romance stories as well, though. But I don't agree that it is only because of the era. There is no reason that modern people cannot fall in love or be as romantic as the characters in Jane Eyre, and also there is no reason why a book written more recently couldn't be as romantic as this one. Maybe that setting just appeals to you?

Hi tumenoa,
Jane Eyre is still my most favourite Romantic Novel the thread of the story is timeless. People like those two loved and the same can be said of people nowadays too.
Charlotte Bronte put this to pen and paper so very well that you could associate it with all most any era the situation could be the same. Say it could take place the same situation on a Spacecraft going to the Moon in about 500 years time. How do we know that it cannot exist because we won´t be there but her story will be and all those never ending love stories like it too.
There are many Jane Eyres and Rochesters running around the World today but I just hope that there are not any lowood Institutes going about anymore.
I love Jane and Rochester because they are not Mr. and Miss Universe they are ordinary people thrown together in a hypocritical society that it was then so cold and cruel.
Nevertheless Jane Eyre for me has a message that is timeless just llove it.

I did try to read Jane Eyre once, something about an orphanage but it was boring as hell(no offense to any fans out there)as I stopped trying.Lucky I didn't have to read this as an assignment because I probably would have failed it.The writing style as a dry and weird, not what I'm used to I guess.I only tried because it was one of those romantic classics
