I have noticed that alot of people do not understand the U.S. constitution. All the blame for the recession is being put on President Bush. I am wondering how many people think that the president is in charge. Do these people understand what the first 10 ammendments to the constitution are for? Are the kids in school being taught the constitution and it's meaning correctly?

Well the problem is that people really aren't interested in understanding how our government works. It's much easier to read articles on the internet and get news from the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. Now don't get me wrong, those are good funny shows, but even John Stewart shouted at the audience "Don't do that!" when he heard that most people get their news from such shows. People have heard how Bush screwed this country up so many times that they've decided it must be true. He must have created a deficit, Clinton must have cured a deficit, and Bush must have lied to get us into Iraq despite the fact that nobody is accusing other leaders like Tony Blair of lying.
I can't really speak for what kids are being taught in schools as I don't have any yet. When I was in school I felt like one of the few students who actually paid close attention to social studies classes where the government, supreme court, legislative branch, and such were discussed. With how bad education is here in Florida right now, I don't think they teach anything but math and English now.

I highly doubt our fellow Americans understand the U S Constitution, and history has already proven that our elected officials don't either.
As to what our children are being taught in our school about our Constitution, I really can't say. My guess is nothing, to little!
I can say that I home schooled my son for the 7th, and 8th grade. At the start of this process, I discovered that my Distinguished Honor Roll Student couldn't read or write, and he had no clue of the concept of math operations and properties.
I was at disbelief, and pissed, that my tax dollars were being used to put my child, and others through an education that they aren't getting!
So, I'm terrified at the direction this country is going, from the top to the bottom. These children are the future of this country, and I for one am tickled pink I won't live enough to see the consequences of our uneducated kids.

So true, our schools do nothing to teach the students now. If the kids want to learn they have to deal with the dumbing down of the curriculum to be able to pass everyone of the kids. This was actually told to me by a teacher. As to the constitution, either the politicians do not understand or they just ignore it.

The constitution is slowly and frighteningly becomming a quaint relic. schools do not really teach it effectively anymore and it's importance. I think it should be a required course taught in early education than later on in highschool. Not merely a few weeks, but a full course. It should be stressed in the course that this is more than just a guidline but is a sacred document requiring strict adherence. That it is a contract, that gives and takes. That it by, virtue of the state, gives concent to the federal government to govern and by the same virtue, can withdraw concent should itbe violated, backed by the declaration of independence.

People are used to looking for the President for leadership. Most of them really don't know the constitution or at least not that well. They simply believe that the President ultimately makes the decision as to how the country should be run. Add to that that over the last two years the Democrats primary campaign platform was a 'not another Bush', and it's all Bush's fault... well, you know, they had to deflect the notion that the Democrats were primarily making the decisions, lol. That would have not looked good for the voters. Anyhow, it's been hammered into the voting base that Bush is at fault for anything and everything that went wrong, some even blame him for 9/11... does it really surprise you that they don't think twice about who is really in charge?

Well when you are a figure head for the country you get the finger pointed at you for everything wether you had any control over it or not.
To tell you the truth I do not think a lot of American realize how our federal government works, who has the power to do what and why. The constitution is not taught like it should be ( along with a lot of other things). They go over it for a week in middle school and that's it. THen maybe breeze back over it again sometime in high school. The schools and parents need to do a better job of educated the children about our government. Adults that do not know need to educate themselves on it.

I doubt if anybody understands the constitution and that includes the president!
How can we expect kids to learn and understand the constitution. Especially when they have so much trouble learning even simpler and tangible subjects like maths or english or science.
Going a step further, I don't think any government wants the common man to understand the constitution. What will the politcians do for a job when the layman is enlightened?

It does not matter what the politicians want. Just a little work on our own can help people learn what the founding fathers intended with the constitution. Thomas Jefferson wrote about what was meant by the things written in the constitution. Just read the federalist papers which were the precurser to the constitution. Other founding fathers also wrote about the constitution. If we were to learn about the constitution we would all be up in arms about the bailouts because the constitution tells congress what tax money can be used for and it is not bailing out privite companies.
