Should we be allowed to die if we are terminally ill?

There are many people who will say that being allowed to die is our right, or, if we are unable to make this decision for ourselves, then it should be made for us by a family member. For example, Terri Schiavo's life support was turned off, and she passed away. Some would say it was not ethical, because if she was meant to be dead she would have died long before. In fact, the opposite was true, and she would have died if she had not been kept alive by artificial means. Excluding religious beliefs or reference to any "God" as you understand him/her, what logical explanation can you give for keeping someone alive who is non-responsive and has no chance of a quality life?

i think we allow people to die who are terminally ill, since keeping them via artificail means acts just as a baggage, but ofcoure before acting on our own self we should have the persmission of the person who is terminally ill, only when the person who is sick says yes he is ready to die then we have the right to allow them to die, even if via artificial means we are able to keep a person,we should look at it in his point of view that what can he do now that he still alive but just lying on bed the whole day,its seems useless...we should be ready let go people at any moment of our lifes

If in a situation like Terri Schiavo then yes I want to die, I would want to move on from this life. In a case where I am terminally ill, I will live out my life till I die, at home with my loved ones saying our goodbyes, till my time was here. If I was in so much pain, that I wanted to die, I would tell my family and I would just od myself or something. I don't think it is for anyone to say who has to live or who has to die. Now saying that I don't believe in sucide. It is a permant solution for a temporary problem, in most cases. I also don't believe someone should be forced to live in unbearable pain and suffering. I guess the best thing to do, is to leave instructions to your doctor for the worst case senerio. Talk to your loved ones about your wishes. And hope that the people you trust, follow through with what you want. Document it while you can, because you never know what could happen.

Yes I beleive we should be allowed to die if we are terminally ill and want to go, sometimes keeping people alive only prolongs the suffering and still has the same result.

I have nothing so much to say about but in my own opinion it is God's will if we must die in His time. Doctors do what is the best for their patients put some gadgets to make their life long still until finally stopped their heartbeats. As somebody says about the mercy killing methods this is if the patients didn't have any reactions but still alive as we can see in the monitor. Others are suggested about the taking off all the gadgets to released the body in pain and suffering. In short for me I will let the patients alive until finally stop their heartbeats. Let Him take my life if I am the one suffering like that. According to my own opinion only.

Hi ,i am agree to choose euthanasia when a person 's sickness cannot cure but also keep in large pain for a long time and then die.Sometimes I will think, if I suffer from cancer unfortunately, what shall I do since i have no money to cure it?

in some reasons...people aren't suppose to end up someones life.but if the person is terminally ill and what is only making him alive is the artificial life support that cost of fortune, then we have to pay a lot of money to get a machine. but how about those people who can't afford a machine? or even if we could afford it, we would need to spend almost everything, sell everything we have and ask people for help...go on some banks for loans?is it practical? how about those people that are alive? didn't those peolpe need the money in order to live? and besides, if we do the what is so called "euthanasia", we are only setting our love one free...free from pain and ending up the sufferings that they are experiencing..that is what i believe in doing the mercy killing...

I think we should definately be allowed the right to end our lives or thosse of our family if there was no chance for survival or a life of any kind. We give this courtesy to animals and would never dream of prolonging a pets life even though it is suffering and will have no quality of life. So why should humans be any different? I think there would need to be some serious safeguards in place to prevent the system being abused but I would definately be in favour of the law changing. I would hate to think that in years to come I could be taking up a hospital bed for months hooked up to a machine that is keeping me alive. I would hate to think of the suffering that it would cause my family and the burden they would be under.

Well I guess we should be allowed to decide if we live or die if we are terminally ill and suffering severely, I mean only if there is no chance of survival and after we have explored every possible option for living, I dont think that anyone should have to suffer a long painful passing for example when animal is sick and if there is no treatment for there illness they are humanly euthanized so they wont suffer, so why cant humans have the right to choose, and not have to suffer, but I think that if they do pass a law giving people with terminal illnesses the right to choose they should make sure that its only available as a last resort and only if there is no way that they can survive there illness, and also they should make sure that only an authorized doctor can do whatever's necessary to carryout the patient's wishes.

We as americans have been given the right to do what we feel is the best thing for us. We have the right to vote, to get married to get jobs to live as we feel we need to live but its our right as people to live or die. When young adults go to war and supposedly protect our liberties these young adults are not given a right when u are in an armed forces u are there to protect us with your lives. So if we are in so much pain that we cannot bare then we do have the right to die when all other options are gone.

I know what the laws say and to an extent, I agree. If it was my child I would want to do everything I could to spend another day with them, but would not want to see them suffer at my hand. If it was my husband, I would fight to keep him alive for the same reason, which he says "keep me alive as long as you can". If it was myself, I would not want my family to have to suffer watching me everyday like that, nor would I want them to be murdered financially for me to lay in a permacoma day in and day out. Honestly though, I don't know the right or wrong answer to this question. I understand both sides of the fence and therefore don't have a strong opinion either way. Do I think it is our right to die if we are in that position, yes. I think that if you have it written out or have told family members your preferences then I think it should be honored. My grandpa had a no recesitate on his medical chart cause he didn't want to be kept alive that way and it was hard to be there and watch him die and take his last painful breath. It was way harder however, to watch him suffer the last few days until he finally past away.

I definately think that we have the right to die if we are terminally ill, sometimes relatives don´t want to let go because of their own pain not knowing that the person who is already having an artificial life is no longer with them, meaning that if they are religious, they should believe that he or she is already with God, I think it´s un unneccesary pain for ill person as well as for the relatives.

I don't know the others, but for me if one day I got the terrible disease, I will choose to die. I think it is better to die rather than still living for suffering.

Oh yes so long as there are safe guards as I have seen some horrible actions by children that either just want to get their hands on money or just cant be bothered with their elderly parents, I know I dread the thought of suffering so i would like to have the choice so long as it was my choice.
