Well, let me tell you, I was wondering the exact same thing as you do. Then I saw the trailer, and to be honest, I didn't think much of it.
I hope my friends from India don't feel insulted, but to be honest, I thought the cultural gap would make me unable to identify with the realities the movie shows.
Then, I got tired of hearing about it, so I went to see it, in order to find out "what the big deal" was. And not only I was proven wrong, and identified myself with the characters within the first 15 minutes, the movie blew me away.
Very few movies are nearly flawless, and this is one of them. If you really want to know what the big deal is, then you should simply go and watch it. Easily the best movie of the year, without a doubt.

As I stated on another post on this movie, I believe the special, significant thing o this movie is the fact that someone who you probably don't think is entitled to make it, can make it, he went against the odds and got on this Millionaire show in India and each question he was asked, a part of his life was remembered. I had no knowledge of the film until I read one of Tyler Perry's messages to his fans speaking about folks not relating to his films and how he liked and related to Slumdog Millionaire. So with that in mind, I tend to feel that anyone who is poor or experienced poverty can relate to a film like this. Anyone who has went past the odds can relate to this and that, is the big deal about this movie. plain and simple. achieving the odds.

I think it is script making this film successful and grabbing so many awards and waiting for the Oscar now, the story is simple about a boy coming from the slums in Mumbai and becoming a millionaire overnight just for playing a game that too to find her girlfriend, the screenplay and the direction and also the performances of the actors makes this film a special one

I didn't even hear about this film til this week. I saw a preview and thought, snore. Not my kind of movie. My family wouldn't care either. It has gotten a lot of hype though. It got so many awards at the oscars too and it was the only movie there I had not seen so I was surprised. No one in my area (Eastern Canada) are talking about this movie at all. But online I have seen so much hype. Most are saying amazing, but I just have no interest.
