She SHOULD Be Ashamed of Herself!

I got up this morning and the snow is now more than halfway up my doors again and I can't get out of the house. Most of you know that yesterday I appealed for shovelers for what we already had. I'm still looking for the reindeer bringing you all here! LOL But as you didn't arrive I had to do what I could myself. I got the front walkway done and the back door cleared, but couldn't quite make it all the way to my dog's enclosure so I could put her out to do her business as that's the ONLY place she will 'go'..... So we were housebound, Spunky whining a bit, and me in actual tears of pain from my back. This morning I got up and no Spunky. Can't find her anywhere.....I'm not worried, she's probably in the basement....and I go to the kitchen for coffee. I reached the living room doorway and nearly fainted. Poor Spunky has done something she's never done before! There in the middle of my area rug is the BIGGEST and I mean biggest (!) pile of dog doo I've ever seen. I have a pic on my profile of Spunky....she's a BIG dog. OMG! She's never ever done this before, not even as a puppy! No wonder I can't find her. So I go looking and there she is in my dressing room curled up in the farthest corner of my closet she can reach. I called her out, showed her what I'd found and the poor thing was just soooooooo ashamed of herself I didn't have the heart to scold her. She knew what she'd done and really I couldn't blame her. And I still can't put her out because it's still snowing and piled against my doors again, and my back is in NO shape today to do anymore shoveling myself! Now, the hubs is coming home on Thursday and he is going to be freaked if I can't get the 'smell' out of the rug and who knows what that'll mean for Spunky. I know he'll shovel the snow and get her into her dog run, but it will also mean that I'll be under orders to LEAVE her there regardless of the weather, and I just can't do that... So I need help people! I need an immediate foolproof solution to clean the rug with and get the smell out. It's the urine I'm concerned about. I've already taken care of the 'other' part. You have two days.................go!

You have landed in a problem, which you will have to clear yourself, because it is snowing outside and you cannot call for someone's help. Please pull out some perfume or deodrants bottles to spray in your room, so that the 'smell' could die down. Poor she!

Yes, for sure poor Spunky. I feel so sorry for her. But the situation is sorted now.......except we have even more snow and now I have to work harder than ever to get a path cleared to her dog run.

Today the sun was out! So I got the path to Spunky's dog run shoveled, and quite a bit of the area inside it too. So now I can put her out to do her business and bring her back in when she's done. So let's just hope it doesn't snow heavily again for awhile, or I'll have to do it all over again! lol

Poor Spunky!!! She held it as long as she could. Her whining was her way of saying I'm going to make a mess & I REALLY DON'T WANT TO!!! You might try this... a) Mix 50% White Vinegar 50% Distilled Water b) Soak carpet & pad c) Blot w/thick white towels or wet/dry vac d) Cover w/dry thick white towel/board/weight e) Wait 10 minutes remove towel & let fully dry f) Sprinkle Baking Soda on the dry carpet g) Mix 1/2 Cup Hydrogen Peroxide (or 1 scoop Oxy-Clean which turns into Hydrogen Peroxide) w/ tsp of detergent and 1/2 cup of Distilled Water pour over baking soda and mix in until all baking soda is dissolved h) Pour 50% Vinegar 50% Distilled Water over the area i) Blot or use wet vac till damp j) Cover w/towel, board & weight for 10 minutes. repeat k) Let dry & check with black light for pee You may need to do this more than once to get it all. I just used the vinegar & water for the followup treatments. Good luck!!! OR you can tell your hubby that's what Spunky thinks of his ability to make car payments on time!!!

Thanks LadyM. I'm using the vinegar solution now, but I do have Febreeze in the house, though you have to be careful with it, because when it gets old, it smells worse than the smells you're trying to get rid of! LOL

I found it online & it worked for me when my Tobi was a pup. Some say it didn't work for them. I did do it a couple of times before it worked. I've also read where peroxide & water will work. You just need something to break up the enzymes. With 2 cats in the house, I keep Febreze in my cabinets for emergencies. I learned that one on my last male cat that had a habit of spraying. If it can kill cat pee smell, it sure should kill dog pee. If all else fails, use my last suggestion!!!

Oh the shame, the indignity, the humiliation... poooooor Spunky! Sounds like you've been given some good advise by everyone else so I won't add any more. As far as shoveling goes, do what I do, a few shovels full then sit and rest. Then a few more. It takes 1/2 hr just to get a few feet done but it's easier on the back. Spunky may have to do her business where she doesn't like to but it's better than the rug! I can sympathize with being snowed in. Been there a few times. I've had to climb out a window on more than one occasion to clear the doors. At one house I lived at I had an upstairs apartment and only one door to the outside. I ended up having to climb out thru a window onto the roof of the porch and jump. That was fun! Soft landing anyway into 4 ft fluffy snow drift. I was only 18 at the time... I don't think it would be quite as much fun now at 50! It's too bad that Spunky isn't more like this dog. She'd be blazing her own trail and in 7th heaven! http://maniacworld.com/dog-having-a-blast-in-the-snow.html

LOL! Whose bright idea was it to cross a Dalmatian with a Lab?! Too funny, and thanks so much for the much needed giggle. I showed the video to Spunky and she wasn't too impressed. She looked down at her long coat of heavy hair, back up at me and her expression was like "You've got to be kidding me!" LOL Yeah, I can't do the same things I used to do at 18 either. I jumped out of a lot of windows at that age too.............LOL Not now though. I can't even jump over the drift at my front door to get on the other side so I can clear it! Stupid me should have brought the shovel INTO the house yesterday so I could shovel my way out from the door! DUH!

That's actually very creative. I do have a large mouthed metal bowl hubs uses to mix his pie dough in................it's dark now, but I'll give it a go first thing tomorrow, when hopefully the snow will have stopped! Thanks! Now, why didn't I think of that?.......oh, I know, I'm having a DUH! day! lol

I would try a solution of Arm and hammer baking soda mixed with water. placed on the rug and allowed to dry. Kinda a paste then once its dry vaccum it up with a vac and it should get rid of the smell. I kinda rub it in to the carpet after its dried as well just to absorb any that may still be there. I have also used dish soap but you may want to test for color fastness before using it. Good luck I really hope you get it out for poor spunky's sake.

Yeah, poor Spunky! lol I used your method first Autumnrose, and am now using the vinegar/water solution for extra 'safety' in getting rid of the smell. I can't really smell the urine anymore......just the vinegar! LOL Thanks for the tip.

There's your answer, sparks! When hubby comes home, just tell him that you were making, umm, pickled beets or deviled eggs or something with vinegar when, all of a sudden, the bottle of vinegar just slipped out of your hand and vinegar went all over the place! Yeah, even by the living room doorway!!! "Honest, hon, it just exploded!"

Lol mw, if he'd only believe me! I'm allergic to vinegar so he wouldn't fall for that. I've gone through two pairs of surgical gloves and nearly a whole box of kleenex for my nose and eyes just using it on the carpet! Could possibly convince him though that SPUNKY got into it! LOL

Being animals, dogs surely do not understand all this. So, it is quite natural for him to behave like that. Dogs have their own uniqueness which can be seen in all aspects of their life. many a time, my dog has saved me from danger. That is why I have great regard for dogs.

Vinegar...the all purpose solution! LOL My gran had a recipe for stains of all kinds that really worked, but I don't know about 'smells'. You take one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, one teaspoon of milk (whole milk is better) and one teaspoon of vinegar. Mix gently, then using a toothbrush, carefully 'brush' the solution into a stain until it foams. Brush a bit more and then blot with cold water and wash item normally (for clothes and such)or just blot thoroughly and let air dry for rugs and things. Worked everytime except on heave oil based mechanics grease. I think I'll make up some of that after the rug drys from it's current treatment, just to be on the safe side.

Oh the pressure of this assignment. I can't get to you because we are snowed in also. Not as bad as you but bad enough. So all I can suggest is baking soda and vaccuuming. Perhaps, warm water and dish soap to wash the area. Then the baking soda and vacuuming. More baking soda and more vacuuming. Then there is the other option. PANIC!!!! Run away from home. Take Spunky with you. Of course, you could also pretend you smell nothing. Convince hubby he is insane. "I don't know what you are talking about. I don't smell anything. Maybe you have something stuck in your nose. Did you fart???"

It's his fault that you live in the middle of nowhere Sparky. As a husband I know that even if it isn't, it is! Being male he won't notice anyway and if he does make it clear that dogs pee and poo, just like us. Tell him that it was an accident and that there's no way that Spunky is sleeping outdoors when your big rugged man is away. If you must clean it then use a steam cleaner. Always works when I pee on the carpet!! ROLMAO!

I'd give you an answer but it looks like you've already gotten the answer I would have given you. The thing is to use all methods and see what works best. I'm glad to hear that you've gotten a reprieve and the hubs will be a little longer coming home! I had a dog that acted like that whenever she farted. She had some stinky ones, too! She'd be hiding under a chair or something and all anyone had to do was say, "P U! What stinks?" She'd slither out from under the chair, slither across the room, literally on her belly, into the next room and hide there. I hope your snow storm is over by now! Hooo weee! Sounds like you certainly got more than your share of it!

Hey sparky! I see that you were able to get plenty of help with the rug and I am so happy! Poor Spunky! The one thing I would do after all that rug cleaning is to roll it up just in case! I don't think she would dare do it again, but I wouldn't take the chance! And yes, you should have brought the shovel INSIDE the house to shovel yourself out! Maybe you should put her in the basement for a little while so she might get the hint if she can't get out of the house! That poor baby has to go somewhere! You have absolutely no neighbors or anyone that can help you out? That is really a shame! I wish I was there! I might have a heart attack with all that shoveling, but at least I would have a great time with you and Spunky!

Sweet Opal, I wish you were here too, but there is no way I'd let you have a heart attack working for ME! You could play with Spunky and make Hot Cocoa while I did the shoveling. And no, there is no one under the age of 65 (except me) within 25 kms of where I live. LOL Spunky IS in the basement now, curled up in her dog bed. I opened the door to the basement to put my coat away and she went down on her own. She NEVER goes down on her own! She's still feeling ashamed of herself poor thing. I'll bring her up before I go to bed, and she'll be a good girl all night.

There's a spray you can buy that gets the smell out-it uses enzymes, I think. Maybe your local vet sells it, I know mine does. It's good because the animal won't go back and 'remember' where they did their business, so they won't do it again. When I was a cleaner at the university they had a commercial grade of this product. I think I saw it at Home Depot, too. Good luck!

I'm slapping my forehead as I type this! When Spunky was a puppy we bought some of that spray you're talking about, but she was such a lady and NEVER had a accident, that we've never used it and I forgot all about it!! I know I still have it though. So I will find it, spray the area in the morning and voila! Problem solved and she won't go there again. Thanks so much Fortunata!

You may have to rent a steam cleaner after the weather is better and you can leave the house! Otherwise, soak the area with vinegar and leave it for a few hours. Then pour some arm and hammer baking soda on the area (wet it down to make a paste) and leave that for another few hours. Then, scrape up the arm & hammer, douse the area with water and then start soaking up the water. If you have a shop/wet vaccuum, the process will be easier. You can keep adding a water/vinegar mixture and then suck up the liquid with the shop vaccuum - sort of like steam cleaning only cheaper. Good luck. Maybe there are teenagers in your neighborhood who will shovel a path to the dog run for you? When the snow is deeper than 6 inches, I have to shovel a dog run for my chihuahua because otherwise he'll sink to his neck. You can also buy inside training mats for pets. Usually pets will soil the same area, so you put the mat on their favorite spot. After they go to the washroom, you roll it up and throw it out and replace it with another! Another idea, although silly looking is to diaper your pet if they'll let you.

Well the rug problem is sorted now and it's all good. I live in a tiny town in the middle of the Prairies and all our residents are grandparents........so no teenagers available for miles around I'm afraid. As for Spunky in a diaper........not a chance! She's too much of a lady to do that to her.

I'm going to tell you just as I see it, ok? There's no way in hell that any man will tell me what to do with my dog! He'd be the first to hit the road before I put my dog out because HE wants it out! I'm so serious about that spark. She had to go and her area wasn't cleared, not to any fault of your own because you can only do so much but she is a living creature so therefore, she has to go potty like any other living creature but since she couldn't go outside to do her business and she's never done it before, I feel she's in the right, NOT your husband. He wouldn't get near my dog without me all over his azz!! Not if she's been that good of a dog all this time! Now my suggestion would be to go to walmart, if you have one in your area and get some rug shampoo made by Bissel, in a green bottle which is for alergins. It has a wonderful smell to it and it gets odors out really well. If that's not an option then try vinegar and baking soda. First put some vinegar on the area and let it sit for about 10 minutes then get up as much of the moisture as you can the pour some baking soda on it and let it sit for about an hour then vacuum it up. That should do it BUT, if it doesn't then try some lysol or pine sol cleaner and let it sit for about 10 minutes then get the moisture up. That should do the trick. Good luck!

Oh, I hear you Cats. No way will I let the hubs freak and peak over Spunky because of this. She's a good dog and I so need her company these days that I won't let the hubs change the way things are when he's not here. That's why I'm panicing to get the rug ship shape before he comes home .... then he'll never even have to know what happened. I'm doing the baking soda, vinegar/water thing right now and there's no smell.....well I can smell the vinegar, but that will go away soon enough. I just hope there is no stain...

Hi Sparks! Hope the back pain is easing. I honestly can't imagine what it must be like having all that snow. Living in the tropics it is not something I ever have to deal with. However I am quite an expert on the smell factor! Here in Oz we have a nifty little product called Nil Odour. No joke it is the best thing in the whole wide world. A drop or two of this stuff and any smell is gone in an instant. If you can't get your hands on any of this magic potion there vinegar and bi carb soda can also do the trick. To save me writing it all out I found an article already written http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/odor-removal/how-to-get-rid-of-cat-urine-odors/ Good Luck! ~ fairy wishes & butterfly kisses ~

Well, pretty obvious it is no longer the ONLY place she will go, now isn't it. I'm very tempted to be with the hubby on this one. I cannot stand these types of things in MY HOUSE. If she was left outside she would HAVE TO go somewhere, other than IN THE HOUSE, eh? Anyway, that isn't my problem, it is your house, your mess. But, there are 2 options in my book. Or use the combination of the 2, even. 1. Get a big jug of grapefruit juice and soak the area down with it. You can repeat, like washing hair. You are washing the carpet. You can leave some in the carpet and it will not harm it. or 2. After cleansing with your choice of cleaner, you can sprinkle some Baking Soda, with Pet Odour Deodorizer in it. Vaccuum up much later. You can leave it on for 2 days if you wish. The longer it is on there, the more it will absorb and you just vaccuum it away.

Well I've got the odor/stain problem sorted now and the rug is fine. Spunky however is not. She has never done this before, and I really doubt she ever will again. I have to take part of the blame because she did try to tell me she was in distress, but I was in bed, in pain and didn't listen. She's in the basement now and has even refused to eat or drink anything today at all. She KNOWS what she did was wrong. So she's not taking any chances of it happening again I guess. lol It wasn't her all her fault Annie and I can't blame her. Tomorrow when I can get the snow shifted I will put her in her run after feeding her (if she'll eat) and she'll do her business where she always does and feel better about herself. If a situation like this ever happens again though, you can be sure I'll be harder on her.

I have no ideas on how to get rid of that smell from the rug. When I (rarely) faced this problem as a custodian I used a carpet shampoo to try and get rid of it. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. But, since no dogs were supposed to be on campus I didn't worry if I couldn't get the smell completely out of some morons office carpet Poor dog. I'll bet she was hiding!
