Recently, I found out that Microsoft has released the Service Pack 3 for windows xp. Also I know that when the automatic update of windows is enabled, the system will automatically download update files from microsoft.com. But my question is that, does it matter to update the system?

Windows updates are among the most important thing for a computer to do along with proper cleaning and care of the computer. The number one thing that windows updates address are the security issue. If you spend a lot of time on the computer or have an always on connection then you are at risk of an attack from a hacker or virus. Hackers play on security loop holes and parts of the operating system that are easy to get through and access, which is why its crucial to update the system whenever there is an update available. All people are able to be attacked by a hacker or by a virus however when you have the most up to date patches and service packs on your computer you get the best security by Microsoft and the whole computer world. Computer updates are very the number one thing to upgrade on your computer as time goes on, because every day some other security breech is found and this is why there are so many security updates for windows operating system.

Thank you for your response. I would like to post the comment of one of friends for your reaction. He is saying that as long as I have updated antivirus and/or software firewall, I can just turn off the automatic update of windows. Is this a valid claim? What is your take on this?

That is not valid, If you do not update your computer the firewall not being updated either, also windows updates are very important for things like driver updates, compatibility issues, and you also sometimes need them most updated version of windows to even install some programs. On that note if you ever have a problem with the system and contact Microsoft of another computer repair place that will be their first thing to try, updates. Updates are put out to help the system never to hurt the system.

I only update my windows XP when i have fresh clean install of it, but after that i just leave it there. i don't care if it updates or not. SP3, i have tried it. i don't like it. it turns your XP into a Vista mode where you get more slower. atleast that's what i experienced.

SP3 has a secret actually. If you are using pirated Windows XP, your system might crash and blacked out. This incident has happened to a lot of Windows XP users and a lot of people are complaining that even the originals suffered from this issue and Windows has violated some of the user agreements. That's why I normally shut the auto updates off until I am sure it's okay to download. You will never know what Windows have put inside those updates.

Thank you for the response. It sounds like you are critical of the updates released by Microsoft. I just hope that Microsoft would never put anything on the updates that would ultimately crash our systems which are using authentic or pirated Windows XP.

Windows XP SP3 was released on 6 May 08. In fact, most of the service pack update provided by Microsoft repair the black hole of the operation system. As Windows XP already become old version of windows operation system. SP3 works fine in both IE 6 or 7 and Windows Media Player ver 9 or above. So it is no big deal to update or not.
