I have been trying to eat healthier and picked up more fruit. One of which was a couple grapefruits. I remember them as a child being so sour I couldn't eat them. I never bought them because of this. But I tried them and they were good. I always heard they were good for you but I don't know what health benefits they are. Do you eat them and/or know why they are good?

I like to eat grapefruits, I peel them just like an orange. I think they taste much better with all the skin peeled off, not just the peeling. I can't eat grapefruit too many days in a row though, because I get mouth sores. I know that they help with weight loss. I noticed they are on sale, I'll have to get some now that you remind me.:)

Well grapes are rich in vitamin c and other minerals, they have antioxidant properties and increase your immunity. All grapes are not sour, before buying taste one of the bunch that will give an idea whether bunch is sweet or sour.

Hi Vicki. As much as I love to eat certain fruits, grapefruit is not one of them. I tried it when I was a child and did not like it then. And just yesterday my husband convinced me to try a bite of one with a little sugar sprinkled on it. I still didn't like it! LOL But I have to admit, it's not as yucky as it used to be. Though it's still too sour for my liking.

Well,Grapefruit reminds me of an incident involving grapefruit juice that were(are) available off the superstores in Switzerland. My colleagues and I were in Baden for a training course. We used to do weekend marketing for groceries. Since every thing was in German, we used to struggle to understand what was written on the packages about the contents. Being vegetarians it was our practice to read the "ingredients" portion to see if it contained any animal flesh product to boot. Then there was this tetra-pack of 1.0 L Grapefruit juice. My friend confused it with grape-juice. He was in two minds whether to buy it or not. I wanted to have some fun. I told him to go ahead and buy it! He was wondering why " a Grapefruit's" picture was drawn on a pack of grape-juice. I egged him on saying may be its a brand. Somehow my friend bought a liter of it and took it office where we were given fridge space to store. He had his lunch and wanted to enjoy his fruit juice after relishing a home-made lunch. He simply cut the tetra pack open and drank a sip of the juice. There was an Indian settled in Suisse, in front of him as he sipped. My friend's shock knew no bounds."Hey! Why is this bitter-sour-sweet? Eww-ww ! Yeah, Pad the Indian said, that is a very nice thing you did. It is a very good for health. "Oh!No,Raj! But why is that grape-juice is tasting this way? Aah! I can't drink this! Then the other Indian offered to consume that! I just don't understand how people can call this grape-juice. Grape juice will be so sweet and nice on the palate! It was only after a few days that I told him what grapefruit is called in our language. No wonder it tastes awful said he! It is citrus fruit giving you the necessary Vitamin C, also is an excellent aid to digestion. In fact it is a Natural Remedy to stimulate digestive juices.!

Grapefruits are very high in potassium and low in sodium. Low sodium intake helps with the flushing out of the body. They are excellent at removing or dissolving inorganic calcium which accumulate in the cartilage of the joints. (like arthritis) They are very high in fiber....half a grapefruit gives you a quarter of the daily recommendation. And they are good for the heart as they are low in cholestorel and have no saturated fat. Grapefruits are a great fruit to eat if you are on a weight loss diet because they have a high water content which helps to boost the metabolism and they also contain many many fat burning enzymes. You will get a ton of Vitamin C and K....K being good for the skin and C helping your immune system. Dont eat the grapefruit if you take blood pressure medication though as grapefruits affect how the medication is absorbed. Cut a grapefruit in half and make a few cuts into the flesh then sprinkle with a little light brown sugar before toasting under a grill. Or....drizzle with honey. Either way, it is a healthy way to eat a grapefruit. You can also buy the juice already sweetened too.
