After taking extensive and wide-ranging courses in education, i have recently realised that my career is not the only reason to study anything. After gaining 3 degrees in my subject area (educational psychology) i have started studying history, not because i need to but because i want to. In doing this I have re discovered a love of learning that i thought went away in my teeens. Now, is this more important than the learning that allowed me to have a sucessful career? Isindulgent learning any less important than learning for financial gain?

I don't believe its less important. I mean how boring would that be if they only thing you knew is your job? I don't imagine someone like that would be fun to hold a conversation with. I think its important to fill your head with as much information as it can hold :P

I don't know Eskarena. I find both equally important. And if we can combine both I am sure we hit jackpot. People have different interests and should have a chance to pursue them for advancement in their careers but also for enjoyment, curiosity, or just because we would like to know about other things out of what our career demands.
We all aspire to a career that meets our financial needs and fulfills us as something that we enjoy as well. But we also have a need to know things, to explore all that his there for us to do and know. To learn.
WHich one is more important? It's impossible for one to be more important than the other. We are the ones that make the priorities but still need space to allow both.

Hi Eskarena, Life is the largest school of learning and whether you choose to learn for your career or for yourself I don't think either is less or more important and there will be cross overs anyway in all you have learnt for work you will use in your personal life and vice versa at times. You have achieved so much already for your career so why not have a little ME time and be studying something that you have found you really enjoy and has given a new zest for learning. Well done. Huggles. Ellie :D

Believe it or not, the arts and sciences go together, it is hard to have one without the other. The arts let you express who you are, and science finds numbers and reasoning to solve problems. Everything that we have today is because of the Arts and Sciences.

I believe that both are equally important in education. I love arts more than science. I am not a scientific person at all. i am not good at maths or physics but I prefer literature and history. I do believe that everybody has his strengths and weaknesses. I always believe that learning is the key to success in life whether you gain financial gain or not.

I admire you, you have 3 degrees in college. On what I have observed it is depend on what you value most. If is for you that really matters well you have to choose it. Sometimes we choose things that made me happy than made our wallet happy.

There is no limit to learning. In my mind, as long as you learn something new each day, stretch your personal frontiers and improve the way you think, you cannot grow old. Aging only happens to people who lose their lust for getting better and disconnect from their natural base of curiosity. Though I have ceased pursuing any more courses, I spend reading great books. Books are my constant companions.

Your knowledge will help you make a mark on your personality and acordingly will enhance your life also. Whether it is arts or science, you need to excel in your field to be a leader.

I think science is more important in our education but that doesn't mean arts is not necessary for our life. Both of them are quite important at their place because arts teach us about practical knowledge and science teach us about newly newly inventions, about machines, about their work flow, about technology. Which has really very very bright career.

I really think it depends where you are in life. When I was younger and was still preparing for my future I really had no time for "indulgent" learning and had to concentrate on areas which would be advantageous to my career. Now that I am retired and have all the time I need to read and learn I try to do so every day. It is, IMO, so much easier to gain new knowledge without it being a committed daily study chore.

I think they are all important to have in our lives. I think an education is the most important to have though.

While I was in high school, I hated the required curriculum of subjects just to get my diploma...like how is such and such course going to help me in my real life? while yes, I did have to take required courses in college I took a lot just for the sake of taking them, cause I wanted to learn something different and new that I didn't know before...it made for a much more pleasant experience. Even after I graduated college I still had that love for learning quirk in me and would often get books out from the library on subjects I never studied before, not even in college and enjoyed it immensely...one is NEVER to old to learn something new even if it has no bearing on one's career
