I am hearing that Obama is going to bring about world peace. Solve all our problems single handedly, fix the ecomony over night....all kinds of crazy stuff. You would think he was a God or a super hero with the way people are talking. Do you think people's exspectations are a little out of control? He is after all just one man. Congress has more power than the president. Will this set him up for a big fall when he can not live up to these exspectations?

I have had the news on in the backround this morning, switching back and forth between msnbc and fox. Msnbc is an all out love in, it's disgusting, but even fox is on the love train today. I have never seen anything like this. Thread after Thread of how "historic" a moment this is and how Obama is a hero, one person even added the word GOD in a tag on such a thread.
I want to grab people, shake them, slap them hard and wake them the fack up.
COME ON
I am enjoying listening to a DC police scanner stream more than anything really, though the coverage on tv is still comical sometimes, a few million zombies, wild eyes, grinning and dancing like their life has just begun anew.

I know if I hear the word "historic" one more time I might puke. Some people told me "even if you didn't vote for him, you should watch this historic inaug b/c you might learn something". What am I gonna learn? How to spend millions of dollars on a huge event while the economy is going under??

As I have said in another post - I think we are probably seeing the peak of Obama's administration today - he will not be able to fulfill the expectations that people have and their opinion of him will spiral downward quickly.

He'll only be able to sap the "first" status for so long - after a time, it won't matter anymore.

You may be right. I do not see him being able to live up to the hype.

You would think they would issue him a super suit and cape when they swore him in with the way people are talking.

Yes, he is just one man and it's important to realize that the problems we are facing have been a long time building and will take time to solve. Most Americans realize this but every time someone says on Mylot that they do not expect overnight solutions, somebody else hops in and says that expectations are already being lowered for the Obama presidency.
All I can say is that I want this president to succeed but I do not expect miracles.

I think part of the problem is that there were two things happening today. We were inaugurating a president but we were also coming to terms with the unspeakable rifts caused by slavery. A lot of restrictions got removed from the American dream today and it was tied to the start of the Obama presidency. But beyond good will, this long overdue day of reconciliation won't empower the presidency that follows. Tomorrow, the historical moment will have passed and the man we elected has a lot of work to do.

I agree. We should not exspect miracles...but some people seem to think he is capable of it.
From hearing some of them talk today I half exspected Obama to show up in a super hero suit with a cape to the inauguartion.

Well every new president is always full of hope that in his term he wanted to accomplish as many as he can. But its true I guess everybody is only human but we should always know our limitations. It may be like other presidents before them they promise and they fulfilled some and failed in some. It is up to the people how they will take Obama's administration to fulfill its objectives. I believe Bush started good those days and look where he is right now. He ended with a recession on his hands and is still in the middle of a war he started and still gone unresolved to this day. Well I guess there were choices he made that made this world this way.

Yep Bush started out real popular and look waht happened to him. We will have to wait and see for Obama. But I feel that some people's exspectation are just setting themselves up for disappointment and Obama for failure.

i do think their expectations are way too high. he cannot get anything done if congress and the senate do not back him. and he is not a miracle worker but just a man and i am sure as we will see it will be business as usual in washington with special interests getting their way and the politicians lining their pockets and forgetting about us, the little people. he already put his foot in his mouth by spending so much money on the inauguration ceremonies and celebrations. with our economy so weak they should have done without all of the pomp and circumstance but no they spent, spent, spent and that is just the beginning.

yep it will depend on congress and senate to see how much gets done. even then some people exspect too much.

"Do you think people are loosing perspective about our new president?" -- er... ..yes! It's way kool we have elections and transferral of power (limited as it is, the transferral that is) but no person is trustworthy of too much status in that we are all human beings and quite flawed at that! And far too easily corrupted and/or self motivated.. I almost fear people getting carried away (down the road of the future a ways) with bringing back the ancient days of the demi gods.. (and that was never an attitude that worked out well).

I think many people are treating him like a God but when you say that to them they go "I don't think he's God, I just think he's a visionary". if you ask me, that's the same thing. They think this guy is like Einsten who knows everything and can fix everything. They also think bush was the devil, so what can you do?
I surely won't be disappointed when Obama doesn't live up to their expectations b/c I'm just hoping he doesn't screw things up more than they already are! But I know many people who will probably be very disappointed when he doesn't save the world tomorrow.

LOSING perspective?!?!?! That would imply they had any to begin with! You are talking about people who were literally calling this man the Messiah and the Second Coming even before he got the Democratic nomination! It was nearly impossible to wade through all of that insanity to get to his politics and "real" plans for his Presidency. Sure, every leader wants to be remembered for great things and world peace sure would be great but what does he REALISTICALLY have in mind for the next three and a half years? Personally, I have no idea.

We have gotten alot of hype but no real substance. None of us really know what he plans to do or how he wants to do it. I guess we will have to wait for the state of the union and hope we get more clarity.

I was in the grocery store and people were telling they are sick of hearing about his inauguration. I can't blame Obama for this because it is mostly the medias creation. I wrote in another discussion that Obama has peaked and he has nowhere to go but down. You can't set such lofty expectations and not have a let down. We will see what happens in a few months.

This is a healthy dose of a sense of proportion and a good reminder on the nature and structure of American politics.
No, I don't think the very high expectations about him are setting him up for a big fall. Because President Obama is very different from his predecessors, a lot of leeway and margin will be provided him. And if he succeeds, big or small, hosannahs will be shouted, hosannahs for the small as loud or even louder than for the big achievements.
I reiterate, he is not in for a big fall; it is rather the sense of proportion about him that will experience a big fall.

I am not talking about what obama has said he will do...although that is a pretty tall order in itself. But what other people are saying he is going to do...like world peace and solve our problems over night. It is just not pratical.

You know, I'm reading these reponses and what strikes me most is the cynacism and negativity. I'm not sure why people are so far against President Obama. Is that where the last 8 years have left us?
What I feel today is hope. Maybe the problem with how things have been, is that we kept getting failure after failure, so we kept lowering the bar lower and lower, just hoping that our leaders would pull us through. We would think, things are so bad they can't get worse...and then they did. I'm not going to point fingers at one leader or another, let's face it, our government collective failed.
Now I feel it's time for a change. I originally responded that I was worried about people setting the bar to high. I would like to recind that statement(that's why I am posting this separtely). I think we as a nation need to set our sights high. We need to come together as a nation and work to solve the issues that we can impact on. We need to take responsibility for what we have control.

I agree that we need to set the bar high....just not as high as some people are setting it. They are making it like he is a God or something. They are saying he is going to solve all the worlds problems....ya well I think the problems in this country alone are going to take us most of his time...and some where in the world there will always be problems. Some people are being unrealistic. Yes we should exspect great things....but not impossible things.

That maybe Obama is going to actually fulfill his dreams and rebuild America and make it a safer world to live in. Maybe this is what the world needed. Maybe he will bring our love ones out of the war. To me it is not really loosing perspective it is the fact that he is gaining more of the attention and that is having people's ambition up high. To me he think he is going to solve all these problems by himself. To me that he is not going to fulfill his dream to rebuild America. That is he not going to bring the troop home like he promised. To me that he is making the world a bad place to live. Thathe is making the taxes out of control. That he is not only bringing himself and bring down the people with him. To me he would be loosing the perspective from the people. I agree he is setting him up to be a failure.

I didn't vote for hom but I am more than willing to give him a try. I am in the UK and the TV coverage here started at 4.00p.m. I got so sick of hearing "First black Preident." I wanted to shout at the TV hes mixed race. I looked at the way people were dressed. Hillary Clinton was dressed like she was goinng shopping at WalMart. I bet Michelle Obama was froze in the outfit she had on but boy - those children of theirs are gorgeous especially the youngest one. Well today is his first full day in office so now we have to sit back and see what he manages to get done. The Congress and Senate govern the country - he is just the figurehead. Peoples expectations of this man see to me to be too high. When things don't happen as people expect them too they won't blame the Congress or the Senate they will blame Obama for not fulfilling his promises. The first election there is for Congressional and Senate seats might then change and Republicans might get a majority in one or both of them. George Bush has taken a lot of flack but few people stop and admit that he has had to work with a Democratic House and Senate and their objective was to make him look bad. I hope deep down that those in the majority change the speaker of the House. Pelosi - if allowed to mouth and continue like she has is going to be a thorn in Obamas side. All I can say is "Good luck Mr. President." I wouldn't like to be in your shoes.

Obama can't make you out of the crises unless he denies the jewish influence in the united states and challenge there influence which is the root cause of all the problems the world. The Solution begins with American presidential Slavery has come to an end and they must take all people along rather dictating them over there internal policies and "war on terror" is a myth but there is a comming of more serious trouble to revealed as the result of American arrogance toward middle-east issue which is all about occupation, invasion and Genocide in the 21st century ...
Today still the world has not changed except the faces and terms to be used to get cheap popularity..the root cause is simply there the economic freedom and replacement of Isreali land to somewhere else and punish them for warcrimes.I guarantee you that people will start loving you and except you as the super-power..
but Obama doesn't seems capable for doing the real job..

I am concerned that people are setting the bar so high that he can do nothing else but fail. My expectaions are lower. But for the first time in a long time(8years I think), I have hope for this country to move in a more postive direction.
I think what also gives me hope is the reaction the rest of the world has had to this past election. They see that this country is not happy with how things are now. They see we want things to change.
Let's just hope that congress will work together so that change can truly come about.

i completely agree with u. im sure he will be a good president but he will not be able to fix EVERYTHING and there will always be people to disagree with his decissions. people need to relax a little. he will fix what he can but like u said he is no super hero, just a good leader..hopefully
