It's to get the owner attention on the store shelves.

If it has a squeaker it has a lifespan of less than 30 seconds around my Macha. She'll disembowel it & destroy that squeaker in no time flat.

That's what I think too....they really don't care unless it squeaks or something.

there are new studies that indicate that dogs actually see more than we thought they did in the past. But I think the colours are just to tempt their dog owners to buy the products in the colours they like. Dogs really couldn't care less.

Part of the reason is undoubtedly that it's humans that buy the toys, not dogs! Dogs do have colour vision but do not distinguish well between red and green. They don't perceive colour in quite the same way as us. They do see colours but they don't see them as brightly as we do. Dogs rely very much on smell and hearing and their sight is so designed as to see movement rather than shape. Here is an article which shows you roughly what a dog sees and how it uses sight: http://www.agilitynet.com/health/caninevision_markplonsky.HTML

I didn't know that dogs were colorblind! Now you got me wondering why they are all so brightly colored...maybe it's to attract the attention of the buyer...I know my son's dog's favorite thing looks like a big piece of wool that she throws up in the air etc....it's white.

I think the color is more for us humans than it is for the dogs. I think that the dogs enjoy the feel of toy on their teeth. I also think they like the sounds the toys make, I think for the most part that they just like to chew them up. I don't think they care about the color at all.

I guess this question also applies to babies, since from birth babies are born colour blind and then start acquiring their eye sight colour by growth. However, you still find that all toys and games are all bright and colourful! May it's just to attract customers to buy more of these items as they seem to cute & lovely.

i always figured with babies it was to help their eye sight develop and adjust to new colors etc

That is an interesting observation. And a very valid one at that. It has never crossed my mind before. Lets see, I guess the different colors will appear as different shades of grey to the dog. And a dog being a dog, will still be able to differentiate them by the shape and the smell of the toy. The colors are more to cater to the person who is buying them for the dog. A kinda sales gimmick I guess.

well they maybe colorblind, but still they can see colors its just not exactly as the ones we are seeing.bright colors tend to attract the as with the bulls because they can see it more clearly than the pale colored ones...

I agree with you. My dog has colourful toys: red, orange and yellow. Even his bowls are of different colours. I think that we choose colourful stuff for them just like for small babies, just to add colour to our lives, remind childhood memories which are also full of hues.

perhaps the colors are more aimed at the owners and the shape/texture at the animal?? I dunno... just a theory... humans buy the stuff, the pet gets to drool on it and chop on it. a dog is more than happy to drink from the toilet so it is a safe bet that the colors aren't a benefit for the animal... as far as i can tell anyways.
