I went to a hospital recently and as always I had trouble eating even tough I was hungry and there were numerous sumptuous treats on sale. I am not sure what it is but somehow the thought of sickness all around was just a little too much ,even though I was there to see a doctor too. Maybe if I was a resident of the hospital then maybe I wouldn’t mind but it is going to take some doing on my part

You are a lot like me .I have tried to do it but somehow the food just wont go down.It is like a lump at my throat .I dont want to think that I am being scornfull of others but its just one of those things that I havent mastered yet .I suppose if I was a patient then I would have eaten my yummy treats and not think about it ,probably even request a second serving.

I dont feel comfortable to eat in hospitals.Even though I go to as a visitor to see someone there,I cant eat anything.something disturbs me.Maybe the patients around, all sickness, all cryings. So pathetic. It disturbs my mind.
And moreover the tablets and medicine smell too annoys me.We will be surrounded by all syringes and beds of diseases. It really disturbs my mind.Once i was hospitalised for some 2 days.I couldnt manage at all.I prefer to have drinks only rather than eating anything if at all there is a necessity. But what about those Doctors and nurses? Its really great of them..

You are just like me .I have only been there as a visitor too but like you say there is something there that just unnnerves me.It could be all of the things you mentioned ,the crying the patients ,the sickness .But I think above all its the smells ,the table ,medicines and the cleaning agent, just throws me off..Thanks for your answer .I hope I never have to go to the hospital but I suspect i would have a hard time initially but ithink I would catch on eventually

Hi. ronnyb. Yes, I can eat at a hospital even if I am a visitor. I will feel kind of awkward at first, but if I am hungry, I will just eat something. When I was pregnant, I would walk to the cafeteria to get me a cold cup of ice water. Or just plain ice. The cafeteria workers had no problem with me coming either. So, I got something to drink from here. I have enjoyed it too. Sometimes, I would feel as if I am being greedy and all. But the way that I saw it, I was soon to be a patient here and I know that I will be eating many types of foods and drinking too. So, I mind as well help myself now.

When I am at the hospital visiting or spending time waiting on someone in surgery, I have no problem eating at the many restaurants that most have now. Just this Tuesday we were there all day long while my sister-in-law was in surgery and recovery. We ate breakfast and lunch there, and it was good. I know some hospitals don't have good food, but they did. My daughter used to work in a clinic connected to a hospital and the hospital cafeteria had great food. We ate there often.

Yes i can..I have eaten many times at the hospital when i had family members there..The hospitals hire people that have a health certificate when they are going to work in the kitchen...If they do not have one they will reqire that in order to work around food...Its a law now..I am a bit uncomfortable around a hospital itsself though because they are there because they are sick from some illness..They are supposs to put a warning on the door of someone who has a transmitted disease, however they do not always post that sign...So i am very careful...

This is a new initiative being taken at most of the high class and big hospitals in my country. It had been made compulsory for both the patient as well as all the visiting people to eat food from the hospital canteen only and no outside food, even home cooked food is not allowed.
I don't know how good is it doing to the health of the patients, but it definitely is working pretty good for the hospitals & their canteen who are selling food items at pretty expensive price.

Hi ronnyb! Yes, I can eat in the hospital. I did a part time job before in a hospital so I got used to with the environment. Another reason is I usually stay with my grandmother when she is admitted in the hospital every now and then. I could eat but not really that much the way I do when I am in the comforts of my home.
Take care and have a great day!

I have eaten in the hospital a few times. The first time I was there for some tests that took several hours. We went to the hospital cafeteria (my mom and I) and had lunch. It was pretty good though a little pricey. I was very hungry and pregnant and it had been a long day. I never thought about sick people or other things. Most of the people there were nurses and other staff members, with some people there who were probably visiting sick family members. The other time(s) I ate at the hospital was after I had my son. I was in the hospital for two days and ate every meal they served me and several snacks. It was easy and the only people I saw while wondering the halls were new mom's and their families. It was like its own little world up on the maternity wing.

The hospitals near us have great cafeterias with good food and most hospital food is cheaper than fast food and gives you more of a choice. In fact, when my kids were young and we had little money, and were traveling, we would look for hospitals to eat. It never bothered me.

Of course I can eat.I think there is nothing wrong if I eat there especially when in a private hospital where the facilities is well taken care of.I'm sure the food there is clean too. There is nothing to worry about the place.Anyway you are not really there to eat.

There was a week about a year ago when I had not much choice in the matter but to eat there. My husband was hospitalized for an infection that almost killed him. I spent every day there from morning until late at night. I would eat a little bit when I got back to my mothers house at night (that is where I stayed because we live out of the city) but was usually too tired to eat. So my husbands family would push me to eat at the hospital so I could keep my strength up. At the time I did not think about where I was eating.

hello ronnyb,
In my own experienced, I've never tried eating in a hospital if I'm a visitor. I bring food for the patient and his family but me eating there is a big no. I'd rather eat outside than eating there. Or sometimes, I eat first at home before visiting someone in the hospital. That way, I will not get hungry while having a visit.
Besides, I find it so hard to eat there for the smell of the room or environment is different and the feeling of eating there is not comfortable.

Dear friend,
I do faced some situations as I had be with my mother in hospital, I do feel not much comfortable while having food at hospitals. At times if I see some bad situations of patients in hospitals I could not able eat much comfortable even if I am hungry. Still at times at go out to near by resturants or cafe to have food.

I don't know if it's the kind of hospitals we have here or what, but I think hospital food is great. Well, except when they serve something I just don't like. On those days I would always try to talk a family member or friend into going out get me something.
As far as all the sickness around the food, I know they are very hygenic in the cafeteria. Yes, hospitals are notorious for being germy but I guess I'm just not that obsessive about germs. I can tell you one thing for sure...there may be a lot of germs in the air in a hospital, but those employees are trained constantly on food handling safety. What about the kid working the drive thru at ____ (insert any fast food restaurant name here)? Do you really think he washes his hands after he pees? EVERY SINGLE TIME? Probably not. And not to mention they touch money (one of the nastiest things around) then food, then back to money. Trust me, I've worked in enough restaurants to know what goes on. I even quit one pizza place I worked at (not a national chain) because a girl I worked with was making dough and dropped a piece in the floor. She then proceeded to complain that now that the customer saw her drop the dough she couldn't use it. The floor of that place was disgusting and I KNOW there was dirt and junk in the dough. Then to make matters worse she walked out of the customer's sight trying to still use the nasty dough. I called her out on it and told her that I ate there too and wouldn't tolerate her using that dough she had dropped. Well, she got an attitude about it so I just walked out...And of course I haven't eaten there since!

Yes, it's difficult to have a good appetite in a hospital but may be when you are already accustomed to eating there, it would be different. I prefer to eat in nearby restaurants.
