Do you agree with President Obama's decision to close Guantanamo Bay?

I must admit, I was more than a little concerned when I heard this. Really like to know what he is planning on doing with the "suspected terrorists" being held there. Do you think this is the right decision and why? What would you do about Guantanamo Bay if you were President?

I'm mixed on it. First, like you, I'm concerned about what is going to happen with the detainees. Apparently Prs. Obama has given the military a year to decide what to do with them, so it doesn't seem he's just releasing them. It also seems to me that the terrorists have won this battle. On the other hand, it is one of the things Obama campaigned on.

I agree. The terrorists won this one, hands down. It shows the rest of the world that they can pretty much get away with anything, doesn't it? Scary!!

I too am concerned about Obama's decision to close Guantanamo. It seems like this is going to send a message of defeat and weakness to the rest of the world, in my opinion. War is not the place to carry on with the "politically-correct" BS. Granted, I do not think that torture is right but if those suspected terrorists go free (nothing has been said yet to the contrary), then it would be like letting suspected murderers go free from jail here in the States. I would like to know Obama's reasons for closing Guantanamo are and what he plans on doing with the prisoners being held there.

Ditto! I have yet to hear any reasoning behind this or what the plans are for those being held there. I think he should make a statement as to these concerns since he made his plans public already.

Firstly, why would a nation have prisons and/or military bases on foreign lands? Such acts often imply aggression and/or intent to dominate. However, if the US believes that these people need to be imprisoned, why not then have them in US prisons in the US?

I agree with Colin Powell, it should be closed and the sooner the better. We're not the bad guys. We give due process to even the most heinous of criminals. It goes to what we are and if we let terrorists change our basic beliefs, they win. I'm glad Gitmo is being closed and I'm confident we will bring the ones who have sufficient evidence against them to a fair trial.

It was a foolish and naive decision. It's like spending $250 million dollars before you win the lottery. He has NO CLUE what he's going to do with these prisoners. He hasn't been president long enough to know anything about them on an individual basis. I know he made this promise and I understand his desire to keep it, but it's just foolish to do this without actually studying the issue and speaking with experts first. If I were president I'd take a long hard look at who we have there and what could be done before making a commitment to closing it. I'm not completely against closing it because it's just been politicized to such a degree that keeping it open would be a black mark on his presidency. The problem is that you have to choose what's best for the country over what's best for your approval ratings and I don't think he's ready to do that yet.

I don't agree with it, and I hope they are all housed in John Murtha's house, lol! Seriously, this is scary. And what did he mean, Obama, when he said no more torture? When were these prisoners ever tortured at Gitmo? I thought that was a falsehood?
