My Dad's brother is my Uncle. My Mom's sister is my Aunt. I am my sister's daughter's aunt. My sister's daughter is my niece. With a new baby in the family and another one on the way, I am stumped. When my sister's daughter had her baby boy, what do you call this? Great niece? Does that mean I am now a Great Aunt? My brother's daughter is about to have a baby also and I am puzzled as to what the baby's relation is to me and I am to them. Can any one help out with this please?

I think you have to be a Grand aunt first before you can become a Great Grand Aunt. Suddenly Im not sure.Lol The way I analyze it, you are just like a grandparent to them just as your brother/sister is to them. You become a Great Grand Aunt when those children also have their own children.

I think that does mean that you would be a great aunt to this child. My husband and I were just talking about this the other day.

If it's a boy then it's definitely not a grandniece.... lol Just had to throw that in there for a good laugh!! Hope you are!! lol BUT, you are partly right, it is your greatnephew. Actually the real title is grandnephew not greatnephew however, greatnephew is the most used title and it's easily recognized as well.

Hi CatsandDogs, Thank you for your response. Understood and I agree, therefore I would be considered a Grand Auntie Heehe. Thank goodness my nephew isn't my grandniece. Lol That would be funny to introduce my grandnephew as that, without knowing better, thanks to my MyLotter helpers. Thanks everyone. I appreciate the help here.

You are the aunt to any children your siblings have. When your nieces/nephews have children, then yes, you are a Great Aunt, and the child is your great niece or nephew, depending on their gender. Does that answer your question?

I guess I always new it was the "great aunt" uncle...etc... thing, but my family has expanded so much as my cousins have babies, and I had babies, I still call them all my cousins...and to my kids I tell them they are cousins... I never realy go into detail --of course he wouldnt understand, he is only 5... but still when you think about how the family that was your immediate family grows up and starts expanding... really what are all the terms....LOL

Well, let's say we're dealing with two sisters. Their children are cousins. Their grandchildren are second cousins, and their great grandchildren are third cousins. Your children and your sister's grandchildren would be first cousins once removed. Your grandchildren and your sister's GREAT grandchildren would be second cousins once removed. Your children and your sister's GREAT grandchildren would be, I believe, first cousins TWICE removed. I think I just gave myself a headache, lol.

In short, you just call them by their names and let them call you Auntie. Do not emphasize anymore whether you are grand or great. We all love to be called in a younger calling which is Auntie or "Tita".

Dear fiend, the old proverb goes -- Time and tide wait for none. I mean the new comers are pushing us back. Ha ha ha! we are growing old...

Your sister's daughter baby boy would actually call you GRAND AUNTIE and he would be your grand nephew. While your brother's daughter having a baby on her way would call you Grand Auntie and you call either grand nephew or grand niece depending on the gender which you did not specify. You can be called as Great grand Auntie when your grand nephew/niece have their own children and Great Great grand Auntie when those great grand nephew/niece have children. And so on and so forth. That is actually the sequence.
