There are common sayings that are attributed to the Bible and are actually not even found there. Here are a few;
"God helps those who help themselves"
"Cleanliness is next to godliness"
"Money is the root of all evil" - this one is a half-quote. It should be "the love money........."
Can you think of others?

You picked one that people quote and it bugs me. I hardly ever hear someone correctly say the love of money is the root of all evil. And if the Bible actually said cleanliness is next to godliness, I'd have to start thinking maybe God was a bit OCD. Can you imagine Him saying that to someone? Kind of funny. Not OCD, just imagining God actually saying it...

I'm just glad God looks at our hearts and not our homes. My sink backed up AGAIN! It flooded my kithen. And would you believe the maintenance man never answered my page? So if God went into my kitchen, I'm pretty sure he'd wrinkle his nose. lol

I actually heard that quote in a song my the smashing pumpkins. I thought about it over and over and over--I have OCD. But my point is, I went looking for these quotes-especially Cleanliness is next to Godliness and I couldn't find it in the Bible. My Grandpa said that to me one time--his house was imaculate and I asked him why he said it. He said that "If Jesus Christ was to come into your house right now and have to base His opinion about you on the look of your house, what would He say?" On that note, because of my mental disorder, my house stays clean constantly--It's my conscience I think.
The words of the song is "Lonliness is cleanliness, and cleanliness is godliness, and God is empty.....just like me." I love the Band, Just didn't like this part of the verse.
Has anyone ever heard or seen the phrase " Idle hands is the devil's playground"? This is one that I have heard since I was a little girl. I know what it means but have yet to see it in the Bible.

Hi rocketj1, People have a habit of saying something is in the Bible, even if it isn't. Someone once told me that Jesus said, "do as I say, not as I do". If someone professes to be a Christian, I think they should at least read the Bible, not quote what someone else has told them. Blessings.

Wow! That IS a bad one! That would assume that Jesus was doing something wrong but that we should just ignore it and follow his words only. This is a saying that most people use to indicate that they are not a great example to follow. Totally the opposite of Christ!
Thanks, my friend:)

Jesus was talking about the Pharisees, not himself. He actually told people to do what they said (when they were propounding God's law) but not as they did. That's because they were hypocrites... they didn't live up to what they were preaching.

one thing that most think is in Scripture but is not, is that there were three wise men that visited Jesus after his birth. The assumption is made from there having been three gifts given!

I'm sure more is credited to the Bible than is actually written therein. Too bad folks feel the need to quote it or add to it, and really don't have a solid footing on what the Bible has to say in truth. Although I can't think of any other examples, I'm sure the half-truths spoken in the name of Christianity, have gone a long way to discourage others from basing faith in the authority of God's word.

Actually "the love of money is the root of all evil," is in the Bible. I Tim 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows
Most of what I heard are the cleanliness and God helps those, I never paid much attention to quotes. OH yes, Nothing Ventured, nothing gained, but I knew that was not in the Bible. Were not a lot of them from Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac?

"Money is the root of all evil" - This one, definitely is not true! Money is a gift from God so that we could use it to survive. Only the people who handles money "may be" evil.
As for other sayings, honestly, I can't think of anything. But there are a lot of it I'm sure.

One of the most often misquoted things is "Do to others what you would have them do to you" from Matthew 7:12.
People twist this around and use it as justification for hurting others saying, "do to others as they do to you."
The Bible verse means 'treat others the way that you want to be treated' while the wrong version means that 'it is ok to hurt someone if they hurt you.'

The ones you shared and all the ones of other responders here are great examples of Christianity ignorance. The average person hear's words from their preachers and teachers and take them as God's word. I mean, we are all told fromt he bginning that our teachers and preachers are messangers of God, and their words are His. So we assume that when they "quote" scripture they are actually doing just that. Bt the sad thing is, they usually are only "quoting" their interpretaions of scriptures, or reqording other so-called quotes form their teachers and reachers. The world is a tainted place, twisted and mangled by man's words, based on false intentions.

Here is just a few that I can think of.
"Spare The Rod Spoil The Child"
"He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him."
Proverbs 13:14
"God works in mysterious ways"
True...but not actually worded this way in the Bible.
"Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."
I think thatis a Ben Franklin quote
That's all I can come up with! LOL

Yes! I know a few sayings related to the Bible. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you". (I think this the right way round)and my Grandmother always said this one "He who sits in heaven shall laugh" I hope I have got these the correct way round. There is lots but I cannot think of more sayings related to the Bible that are not really in it, if I do I will add some more.
