today i went to shopping and I left something in the "shopping car". i put my bags in there as well and my friends jacket so somehow i didnt see some food and didnt take it out so didnt pay until we went packing up the stuffs realized that i have some pork and peaches were not paid. i bought it back to the cashier and talked for quite sometimes only they got to know what happened. Because they dont understand my russian. so finally i paid them. though i thought i was stupid to be so honest. what would you do in such situation? would you just walk out with the free food? or being bloody honest like me?

Hello lovesummer! What you did is good. I would also do what you did. I remember one time too, I bought to a small store and that the lady gave me more change than the change that I should get, so I gave it back to her and she thank me for my honesty. It really felt good actually.

my big mess - my closet exploded!
I'd say you were being honest. I've gone back when I've mistakenly not paid for an item. The one time i didnt go back was the time i picked up my moms box of chicken and we got home 1.5 hours from the store and we were unpacking and mom asked if i bought chicken too...it turned out i had grabbed their box of bags instead.

Oh course you did the right thing. You are a good person and if you didn't do it, it would have been on your conscience and you wouldn't have enjoyed the food. I would have done the same thing for the same exact reason.

I wouldn't say that you're "bloody" honest, hahaBut hey, what goes around comes around. Anyways, honesty is the best policy, nothing beats that. I would have done the same. If I have done otherwise, it wouldn't sit right with me. Taking 5 cents without permission is also considered stealing. If that's wrong when we're 3, the principle still stands even when we're 33 or 333? Haha

Were you in Russia at that time? If so I can imagine that they thought you a fool. That's just the way they think. It's a leftover from communism.

Hi, I had 2 similar situations a few years back .Once, I forget to pay the full amount to a shop-keeper. He send a helper on a cycle to inform me and take rest of the payment from me . Another time : A shopkeeper returned me Indian Rupees 100 more than what he should have returned me . I realized this after going a few steps towards my house. I went back and returned those INR 100 back to him . So,I feel it is better to be honest in these things .Other folks might say : 'Why are you so Honest in this world ? ' . Yet ;I believe this would do no bad for us. If we remain dishonest ,we would have a terrible feeling that we cheated someone . So, I think you did the right thing and need not think too much .

Personally I think you did what is right, and you will be rewarded for it in the end. Sometimes things like this happen, and like others have said it will be Best for you and the store that you were honest like this. I am glad to hear that you found the items and went back in to pay for them.

I would tell them too. Being honest is good even if they do not understand what you are saying. It is good for you as a person and in kharma. I am honest like this too. I have done the same thing as you before and did tell the person and pay.

Hi lovesummer.. Wow, what you did is a great thing It's difficult to find people with such attitudes these days, some people I knew would see such thing as an opportunity and won't return the stuffs Such things also happened to me several times I shop at the supermarket and about to pay my groceries, when I pay and receive my changes, I receive more than I should have received I return it at once that time, and the cashier girl suddenly became pale but then smiled and thanked me I knew she'll be charged for the money if I didn't return it And the other experience happened at a bank here I want to save my money, after I fill the form, I went to the counter The officer girl was still chatting with her co-workers that time while serving me She took my form, processed it, then returned it to me with a smile and a thank you Hahaha, I was stunned.. The money is still in my pocket Hahaa, then I take the money out and she suddenly became pale I can't imagine if I just walked away that time Hahaa .. :-P Anyway, what you did is the right thing lovesummer ! Salute to you .. XD Have a nice day

I never unpaid anything that left in the card. I always double check before I roll my card out. but if I were you, I would do that too or take it back to them without taking it. I am very honest person, I dont even take a penny from my customers. Even if they give me over a penny, i would give them back. Honest is the key to the happiness.

You did the right thing by taking it back. If you had not been so attentive to what you had,you may not have known you had stuff that was not paid for.

I will also be honest and i will pay the money. This type of situation happened to me. Sometimes i forgot to pay and the cashier also forgot to ask. After coming back to home only i analyzed that i forgot to pay. I went to the shop and paid the amount for what i have purchased. What i am feeling is, everybody is doing struggle for earning money. I should not cheat anybody. That's why i am little bit honest.

I think you did the right thing! I was shopping once and there was a girl who was obviously new at the cash register. There was a long line behind me and she was getting flustered. She gave me $20 more change than I should have gotten. When I pointed it out, she didn't seem to understand what I was saying and insisted that she was giving me the right thing. I knew that she was mistaken and made her keep the money because I was afraid she would get in trouble when they counted her drawer. I just wouldn't have felt right keeping the money. I think it was great that you went back to pay for the food!

I would have done what you did. I once thought I gave the cashier a $10.00 and she gave me change for a twenty. I told her I gave her a ten but she insisted it was a twenty. I just knew I gave her a ten so we had he manager come and count the money and sure enough I did give her a twenty but it sure felt right to be sure that I got the right change. I just couldn't leave the store knowing I had given her ten and getting change back for a twenty. I had even gone out side but my conscious just wouldn't let it go. So you did the right thing.

Lovesummer, I don't know about you, but I would feel compelled to return and pay up, as you did. Sometimes people tell me they'd take off and be glad they got something for nothing, but if I have to look in the mirror, I don't want to be disgusted. I even went back once to pay for a pack of gum!

I've done that too and got all the way to the car and was unloading to put in the trunk when I realized there was an item next to my purse. It was at a home improvement/hardware store, and I walked right back in and told her that I had walked out with an item that wasn't paid for. I knew it was the right thing to do regardless of how small or inexpensive the item was. I didn't do it for any reason other than it was the right thing to do, but the young lady that waited on me could have cared less. She just scanned it and took my money without so much as thanking me for my honesty.

I'd have taken the free food - it was their fault for being clumsy. But since I live here in the Philippines, I think I'll pay for it - the people in the cashier would have their salaries deducted if they didn't tally their products with their money and they're not really getting much from the very start so I'd feel guilty. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

'Honesty is the best policy' is what my mother always taught me. I've done what you did several times. Sure, I often think how easy it would be to just walk away with free food, but I would tear myself apart with guilt!!!
