Are the economic times causing employers to take advantage of employees

Do you feel with the hard economic time more employers are taking advantage of their employees? Do you believe that because they know there are several others out there that would just love to have a decent paying job or any job for that matter that they are taking advantage of current employees? My husband is in a current situation with his employer, whom he has worked for over seven years. They promised him a promotion that would happen this year. He finally went in to ask about that promotion and was not only told he was getting it but was also told that someone else was hired to get that position. To me this says dedication to a company doesn't mean a dang thing. He has worked for this company and done everything they have asked only to be $hit on. Do you believe more employees will be encountering this as well due to the hard economic times?

Really is the situation! If I am a boss I will take concern of both outside employees and current employees, But your husband's case is another thing, I will promote him because I have promised, as he worked for many years. But employees have to also think at the employer's side of hard situation, they have no extra money to pay for you. It's hard time.

The worst thing about my husband's situation is the man they hired is probably being paid more than my husband. My husband actually figures payroll every week but they have hidden this man's pay from my husband and the other man that puts in payroll numbers. So I am sure this means they hired him in at a higher rate. My husband was told now because he has a second job that they won't offer him the position. He had that second job when they promised him the position to begin with. Dedication means nothing to employers anymore.

Yes, I think they will try to get more out of all the employees for less money. I also think they will not give enough notice about layoffs and paycuts. Sadly , many will be bending over backwards trying to hold on to their jobs.....and it will get worse as the layoffs continue.....

I totally agree with you. I think people that are very dedicated may lose their jobs even though they have done nothing to warrant it. Companies will be looking to replace employees with others that will work more hours for less pay and not complain one bit about it.

I think they do it at any time doesn't have to be economic hard time, I worked for one company who handed an employee an envelope it was her birthday and they all knew it. She thought it was a birthday card, instead it was a letter saying she was fired.

I think this could very well be the case. I always dealt with things like that when I worked outside of the home before all of this though. I am sure that it is totally worse now.

My son is a body repairman at a Chevie Dealer and they were given the choice of taking a $5 an hour cut in pay or the dealer was going to shut down the body shop. I believe that was too much of a pay cut, it comes to $200 a week cut in pay. He is one of the top bodymen in the area but that made no difference to the owner. We are expecting a big ice and snow storm tonight and tomorrow and their shop will be flooded with damaged cars and trucks. It will be interesting to see what happens in that shop.

In addition to that story of yours, most employers really take advantage of their positions like in online jobs. Many companies do the outsourcing stuffs to cut off huge amount of expenses that they usually incurred in a normal business operation. They employ individual who can offer the cheapest service for them. Indeed, they have really the edge during this economic crisis. The sad part is that they don't care if their employee gets the reasonable amount for their work.

I think that they feel they can do what they please. No one will have health insurance, vacations or any paid time off. Around here they are also cutting wages and telling you if you don't like it hit the door, there are many out there that will take it. It is not like places around here pay alot either. These are places that are paying 12-15 dollars an hour and take everything away and want you to work for 8 dollars an hour. You really don't have much choice in the matter.

I think they will be using less people to do more. And scrutinizing ones for maximum work load too. Promotions will be slim and far between because of saving money. The more employees will put up with the more they will do to them. Sad, but a sign of the times.

employers are absolutely taking advantage of their employees in this market. it may not be right, but they know that their employees would be stupid to leave in this kind of economic environment. they know that they can get more out of their good workers and they will weed out the bad/non hard working employees because those people won't ride out the bad time. it sucks, but unfortunately for most of us, it's an employer's market right now.
