How to stay Happy/Occupied when at home a lot?

I'm feeling quite restless lately, and am tired of the same old daily routine of not doing much. I'm unemployed, currently not in college until later in the year, and occasionally during the week I volunteer somewhere. Finances aren't the best either, so I don't have the luxury of going out too much; this leaves me clueless as to what I should do with my time. When I'm at home I watch some TV, draw a bit, read and use the computer. What else is there to do? Most of my other hobbies involve using the computer, and I'm getting quite tired of that. I do get together with friends, but not on an everyday basis. I don't want to be out all the time and constantly busy, but I'd like to do occupy my days with something more than solitary activities that revolve around the screen. If you're home a lot, what do you do to occupy your time? What keeps you satisfied? I'd appreciate some ideas, and it would be nice to know what others do when they're at home a lot. Thanks! :)

i was off all summer on sick leave from work and now i only work 3 days per week so i am still off somewhat. while i was off in the summer, i made scrapbooks for our nieces for christmas and did some scrapbooking for money. i have also made cards and gift tags to sell. now, i have started a new craft, weaving, and i hope to make some woven bags to give as gifts. i also bought some beads at a thrift store and am stringing them. i am always on the lookout at the library or on etsy for new craft ideas, so i never get bored!

How do you scrapbook for money? I've heard of scrapbooking, but never really understood what exactly you do, lol. Gift tags are a very creative idea, did you sell them over eBay? I wouldn't make gift tags (mine would be too simple and boring, lol), but I think making crafts and selling them for a tiny sum would be a nice change of pace. I didn't consider crafts...I might take up sewing again. I used to sew when I was very little, and loved making clothes for my Barbies! :) I particularly like the ideas you mentioned because they don't cost a lot to get started, which is perfect for me.

If you look at my pass discussion, you will find out I'm having a similar situaion to you. I am a housewife, I don't work, I don't have a driving license yet which mean I'm not able to leave the house without somebody drivess me as it is a must around where I live. I was dying within last couple weeks. I do a lot of cookings and bakings at home. I walk my puppy, I sew pillows and I started a little project to build up a little city for my husband's train set. And I have been finding my old schoolmates on the internet through facebook and playing Texas Hold'em on facebook. I hope my little reference can help you some :-)

You're right, that is pretty similar. I also don't have a Driver's License, so if I want to go somewhere, I either have to pay money for the bus, or wait for someone to be available to drive me. It makes it harder to go places in the Winter :( I used to play Texas Hold'em (free) on a popular poker site. It was quite fun, so I might start that up again. I think it's good that you started the city-building project for your husband's train set. Projects are the only thing that can keep us from going crazy when we spend a lot of time indoors. I believe everyone needs a change of pace from time to time, and projects are a good way of doing that. I love cooking/baking, also...I think I'll try out some new recipes to help add some variety to things :) It's comforting to know I'm not the only one going through this. Not that I wish for anyone to be feeling like this, but it's good to know there are solutions. And hearing how other people cope with it can also give me a chance to learn something new, and try out things I wouldn't normally think of.

My problem is compounded by panic attacks. I have been in this situation for the past 7 years and sometimes I feel my brain would just blast from inside. There's no one to speak with except for my parents and though I work online but it's getting increasingly difficult for me with each passing day. I sincerely wish some miracle happens soon. Wishing you all the best.

Oh, I'm very sorry to hear that :( Hopefully you might find some comfort in speaking to people here on myLot, or a forum that specifically helps those who are affected by Panick Attacks. Did you mean that your work online is becoming increasingly difficult, or that just spending so much time online is becoming difficult? If it's the latter, I understand what you mean - I feel the same way, and it gets very frustrating to just sit at the computer. I wish you all the best, and hope for your issues to be resolved...or at the very least, greatly reduced. Take care :)

Map out your activities for the day, do alot of exercise and stay positive. Think of it as your preparation for the coming times when you have to invest alot on your health so that when you work, everything goes smoothly for an occasional visit to the hospital is a let down. Maping activities means planning one day ahead on what to do tomorrow and trying to meet the goal as much as possible. A positive mind is a healthy mind, hey, there is always a reason for everything. Cheer up!

"Think of it as your preparation for the coming times" Thank you SO much for saying that! I never thought about it like that, and now that you mention it...I should use a time like this to my advantage, because in the future I may not have the time and ability to do what I can do now. Especially once I go back to college and end up working, I likely won't have time to work on myself and things as much as I can now. Someone did mention earlier about planning/organizing...so that is a really great idea, and I think it'll help. Having a plan would also make me feel as if I accomplished something for the day, and that positive attitude will carry on. I will make sure to use this time wisely. Thank you so much! :)

I have the same problem. Unemployed and at home too much. Sometimes I work out for a bit, to keep my mind off things. Reading a book always helps. Even though it's winter, you could go for a walk around where you live. Look up card games on the internet where you only need yourself, and learn a few. Meditate. Learn to do yoga.

I walk very little since it's very cold and there's lots of snow. I do play games and read books, but I'm getting very restless with all these solitary activities, you know? I used to love spending time by myself on the computer, watching tv, reading books, playing games...but now that those things are basically all I can do, I can't stand it! I should learn how to do Yoga, though. I don't like to exercise, but I've heard yoga is very good.

I'm in just about your same situation. Most of what I do revolves around a screen too (World of Warcraft and Xbox Live). I agree it does get old fast. With no money it's like your home becomes a prison.

I agree. It can be hard to do things when you literally don't have any money to spend on "extra", unnecessary things. Sometimes, it's not even possible to do activities with friends if they want to do something that's going to cost too much. Home is the cheapest option, but a fairly boring and tiresome one.

Hi infernal I understand how bore you will be now without any works. You are young and you should not spent your time idle. If you have completed your college studies, why don't you think of searching a job? Once you join some job,you will be more engaged and you will have no spare time to be restless. When you are at home don't do any job continuously. That will be monotonous and boring. You can listen music, watch TV,play games,Browse internet,Cook something, work in garden, talk to some friends on phone etc..etc.. Now you are in mylot. You can spend your time usefully,by starting new discussions like this. When you get responses, read them, give comments, rate the responses, you also respond to others discussions. You will find the time passes quickly and fruitfully. Never remain idle.Idle mind is devils workshop Happy mylotting .

Thanks for your response :) I haven't completed my studies, and will be returning to college later in the year. I've been actively looking for a job, but am having trouble doing so (not many places hiring, etc.). That's why I'm looking for things to do other than "the usual": there's only so much time one can spend at a computer, on the phone, watching tv, and all those other things. I think I just need to find something new and productive to keep my mind occupied!

Here are some suggestions: * start an art journal where you can collage and work on other projects outside of drawing - it passes the time really well * visit the library once or twice per week * find some free courses to take through the mail or online (I know, you said you were tired of the computer, but a lot of online courses require work away from the computer) * write in a paper journal * start a container garden I'm home a lot because there's a LOT to do here (we're a large family), plus I work from home. So, those are some of the things I do to break up my routine. I also read Simple Abundance by Sara Ban Breathnach, which was a HUGE help in this matter.

Yes, I am :p I can't get any more hours/days where I currently volunteer, so I'd have to find another place. I've been thinking of some places, but haven't really decided on anything. Volunteering is very fulfilling, though - more if it can't hurt :) Does Lightspeed give vouchers? I may have signed up there before, but either never got any surveys, or they had a "points" system which I didn't understand. I can't remember; I've signed up with a lot of survey sites but have never had any success. Thank you for the luck! College will certainly keep me occupied, and at that point I'd probably be glad for some "free time" at home! lol

TV, lots of TV and then more TV. I work about half the time. My favorite thing to watch on TV is drama series' like Deadwood, Rome, or SciFi like Battlestar Galactica or Stargate SG1. That's what I do with my time when I get bored. I like to watch the series' from beginning to end all at once. Sometimes it take a month or two as I can only get one or two episodes in in a day and that's when I have a day or two off from work. Yup, I lead a very boring life :?)

Hey, there's nothing wrong with leading a "boring" life...as long as you're happy with it! I wasn't feeling like this a few months ago, but now I am because I'm not accomplishing anything or getting out as much as I'd like. I have all the time in the world to watch TV and use the computer, which has ultimately caused me to become sick of them :p I'm sure once I start working or occupying my time more, I'll appreciate some free time to watch TV and get online.

The majority that eats my time is being in front of the computer trying to earn some extra cash. LOL. Other than that, I do my homework or likewise kill myself texting or being on the phone. I am not that much of a T.V.-person. There are only a few shows that gets my attention. Or if there are no more interesting programs, I just plug in the DVD and watch some movies.

I wouldn't mind making some more money online :p I only like certain shows, and I watch them on my computer because I hate commercials. It's good that you mentioned movies...I haven't watched a movie in months! I'll add that on my list of things to do :)

Well, Sometimes if I am bored, I spent time with my family and this really does keep me occupied. I will try to learn some new jokes and make them entertain as well as enjoy my time making them laugh. I feel that making others happy make me feel happy. I sometimes feel restless too but, when I make others laugh maybe by sarcasm, they really make me feel great. Try to make changes in other people's life and you will find some changes in your life too :)

That sounds nice :) I don't get a lot of "family time", but it's nice when it does happen. I'm not really someone who tells jokes, but I've been meaning to learn a bit of magic and/or some card tricks...I think I will finally get around to it; after all, I have no excuse not to!

I have recently retired (3 months ago) and was feeling exactly the same as you. My days just seemed to run into one another and I never felt like I had accomplished anything. I was bored. There is only so much reading, computing, etc., you can do in a day. So I sat back and took stock of my situation; I needed to organize my time at home, and this is what I came up with for me. I have 2 dogs, so now there is no excuse for not taking them for a daily walk! I take them out early in the morning before it gets too hot. I go out for a ride on my bicycle most days which keeps me active and healthy. I spend a lot of time in my garden either mowing the lawn, or just pottering, and I go for walks on the beach. The best thing that I feel has helped me enormously is to volunteer at the local Plant Nursery - it fills my time, I meet people, and I feel like I'm doing something useful - besides learning a lot more about plants, which is my passion. I find it very satisfying. I'm a keep photographer too, and I live in a beautiful area next to the beach, so I have a world of flora and fauna at my fingertips; I'm just waiting for the perfect shot! The key word is organization I think, and routine. You need to know that you have done something constructive during your day. Hope this helps.

Hi, Abbey, thank you for the response! That's exactly what's wrong: the lack of doing anything productive, constructive, meaningful. The days just seem to melt into each other, and at the end of the day, what have I accomplished? The same old routine things. I volunteer part time at a shelter, and am only asked to come in twice a week. If I could, I would volunteer more days/hours...it's quite fulfilling, and I love helping. It seems like you enjoy outdoor activities? I'm the complete opposite of an outdoor-person, but going out for walks is nice. With all the snow and cold weather, I haven't been able to do that as much. This, of course, leads to that "cooped up" feeling you can get from staying in too much. I think organization is exactly what I need. When you do the same things each day and have no requirements to fulfill, there doesn't seem to be a need for a schedule or plan. As a result, I end up spending too much time doing one thing and not enough time doing something truly useful. I will try making up a schedule and combine it with a few ideas from previous posters...hopefully that should spice things up! :)

There is no place like your home. Home is place of peace and it should be a place of joy. You are unemployed? don't worry. You can do a lot of jobs at your home. You can make some thing to sell it in market. You can work at computer to earn money. You can establish a shop at your home. There are hundred and one activities which can solve your problem of unemployment. Keep yourself safe and busy at your home and try to not waste the time there at your home.

Hi Infernal, I suppose being young and restless, it's rather difficult to stay home. Well, I am no longer young, so I do enjoy staying home, with quite a lot of things to occupy me. I enjoy reading, watching TV and Dvds and going online. Besides these, I will do some writing, housework and simple cooking.

If you're at home a lot then you probably don't have a job? You can work from home and get a job online. Just be careful some online jobs are scams. Never pay someone to get a job, they should be paying for you. And invite some friends over! You shouldn't feel lonely, just hang out with your friends and do something. Go shopping. Go to the movies. Don't just sit around the house all day. I personally hate to watch tv but thats just me.

I would if I could, but as I mentioned in my original post, finances don't really allow me the luxury of going out often. Shopping is definitely out of the question, as are the Movies. I do see friends from time to time, but not so often because they are away at college. Yes, I'm quite weary about online jobs. It's hard to tell what's legitimate and what's not...and most seem too good to be true :(
