Try a new brand?

In this worsening economy, have you tried a different brand from the norm? And found one that's actually better than your normal? I've been trying different brands of dishwashing liquid. I've always been a Palmolive girl. Easy on the hands and so forth. But it's a tad expensive nowadays. So I tried a brand from The Dollar Store. Not that great. Lost suds pretty fast. Then I tried Aldi's Reeva Oxi. I was shocked when it did a much better job than Palmolive ever did!! A bit harder on the hands, but I don't have to waste so much. I usually only get 20 plates done before the water started looking bad with Palmolive. That takes a lot of Palm. to get a lot of dishes done! This did 3 times as much! I admit, my hands need moisturizer now. They're very dry. So it's a tradeoff. Have you tried a new brand and wound up switching?

Have you tried the bread from Aldi's? I don't mean the hamburger buns or hot dog buns, but the loaves of bread. They're cheaper than other stores, freeze very well, and taste pretty good even after coming out of the freezer. Most of the time, they're soft and tasty. Once in awhile, the wrapper isn't what it should be and it winds up being soggy on the bottom. But it happens so rarely, we haven't stopped freezing it. We have 2 freezers. So I put 6 loaves of bread in each, use all of them out of one freezer then start on the other freezer. I buy more bread when one freezer is empty. They don't last too well if you go any more per freezer. Unless you go through bread really fast.

I use off brand everything...if it works! My dishsoap does just as good a job. Havne't noticed my hands anydrier than they are normally. That's what lotion is for anyways! I use the cheap laudnry detergent. Always have. As long as my cloths smell and look clean I am happy. Name brand things are deff. overrated.

We wound up having to stick with Era for laundry detergent. I used to go cheap, got Arm & Hammer dry soap for clothes. I always dissolved it before putting it in the water, but it wasn't enough. After 6 months, we had to dig up the septic system to have it cleaned. That sucked!!! Now I stick with Era, and we haven't had to clean it for 6 years. Big difference!! After a couple years, I started putting yeast through the system too. We haven't had any problems since. So sometimes we have to stick with expensive. It bites, but I don't want to go through that in the middle of winter again!

For some months now, I've been trying out store brands and dollar store products. Most take a little getting used to, but they're essentially quite the same as the ones I used to get for much more money. Now I'm working on using one product, such as things for cleaning, for many tasks when I once bought several. I wish the cheaper paper goods weren't such trash, so instead of replacing those, I use far fewer. Cloth napkins can be thrown in with the other laundry, and paper towels are seldom needed when a variety of cloths are used. I'm loving not just throwing out worn'out sheets, towels, etc. Since it's been 15 years or more since I bought new linens, a lot are starting to fray or wear thin, and they're great for so many uses! It's actually a fun challenge to see how much I can cut household expenses, even though it's done out of necessity.

I love socks. We have to have socks, but cutting up the old ones as rags works so well!! They clean everything. (Except windows. Don't use on windows. Not good) My hubby hates that I save old socks, but has no problem taking buckets of them up to the garage!! I won't let him bring them back down. I will NOT wash oily socks. The only thing I use paper towels on are greasy stuff. I worry about washing cloth with grease on it. Heard about oil and detergeant mixing. Not for me!

I suppose I'm lucky in our current ecomonic crisis, that my shopping list is relatively small as my kids are grown and the hubs is away so much. But even so, no matter how tight money was, I never compromised on certain brands for certain items. Especially when it came to food. I am and always have been a careful shopper and know how to make a dollar stretch, so hard times never really affected food and other necessities.

Same here. I just got really tired of having to use so much Palmolive on so few dishes. I don't use coupons much, cause I know what I like and there usually aren't coupons for that. But it seems to have gotten worse for that brand. I would like to finish more than a few things before having to run another sink full of water. That's just too wasteful for me to handle.

I think you are using the right strategy by using various brands. We can find some better brands by trying them. It also can be a better option with the market conditions getting worse day by day we really need to keep the budgets in place.

Really, there's only a few food items(for example peanut butter) that I am stubborn about and refuse to try an alternative, cheaper, generic or store brand item in it's place. Several members of my family are big fans of ALdi. From eveything to cleaning supplies to potato chips. Most of the stuff that they have purchased there is pretty good...some not as great as the name brand stuff, but when it only costs a third as much, it makes up for that most of the time.

Same here. I tried to use some of the more expensive stuff from Hy-Vee once. Like bread. I bought some of that Cottage Bread. I remember trying it and it tasted so great. So I checked the expiration date and got some fresh. Took it home, opened it up, and it was green through the middle!! I was very put out. I've never switched from Aldi's bread since! Agreed. Most of the time. I still won't settle on anything but Ragu!

Yes, I've been hitting the cheapest brands of just about everything. If it's terrible, I go for the next cheapest brand until I find one that isn't terrible. :-) In the case of some foods, the store brand or cheapest often tastes as good or better than some of the top brands. This is weird, but it works for my budget!

I have problems with Joy. It makes me break out in a rash. Dove soap does the same. (That wasn't pretty after a shower!) Good for a laugh though. He didn't let me live it down for a long time. Sigh.

I am not considering changing any brand. and the price doesn't go up or fluctuate except food.
