The virtue of selfiness?

Ayn Rand once wrote a book and many essays about the idea of the virtue of selfiness. In it she explored the ideas that it is okay and actually good for society that its members be selfish. If each member first thought of themselves and once they were in a good place than they would then help others. I thought this was interesting and was wondering what everyone else thought about it?

Yes, I've always thought Ayn Rand made a lot of sense, ever since I first read "Atlas Shrugged" back in the mid 90s. You have to be responsible for yourself, otherwise not only will you be a burden to others, but you can never really be free. Once you've got yourself in a secure situation, then you'll be in a position to help others.

Interesting concept..in order to help others you must first help yourself..it's true..feed yourself good stuff because what you take in affects others..

Oh I totally agree with her philosophy on this. If we do not take care of ourselves first, we can't help others. I think we learn to balance that though. after raising four kids I realized I could have balanced it a lot better though. LOL

I think she is right. The world might be a better place if everybody just starts by making it a better place for himself. Let's say, you are unhappy about something at work, there being no coffee served in the cafeteria. (just a silly argument to illustrate) If you started a campaign to make sure coffee is going to be catered for, you will benefit, but everybody else who loves coffee in your company will be happy too. They might be happy enough and inspired enough by your example to fix something they feel strongly about, for themselves, and end up making things better for more people, etc, etc. (I think I feel a flowers-and-beads moment coming on - big sunny smile)

I totally agree selfishness is what makes the world go round. If people were told to do things just for other people then they wouldn't do them as well as if they were doing it for themselves! They wouldn't waste their energy on helping ou t a bunch of other people when they could spend it helping themselves. That is why communism failed and why the world today is a better place.
