As I started on my nightly dinner tonight... I got caught off in day dream land about how nice it would be to be able to go eat out more than we do. How many of you stay at home moms, or parents just in general cook daily, and nightly meals? I am a stay at home mom, and most generally cook 2 times a day, and on weekends it's 3 times a day... and man does it get old. We seldomly go out to eat, maybe once a month, and on a good month twice... How many times do you cook at home vs the times your able to go out to eat?

Most of the time, I eat at home. I even bring lunch to school. The only time I eat out is when my friends and I would go out which is usually during the weekends, Friday night or Saturday night. I enjoy eating at home, but sometimes, eating out is nice too. The change on the taste of the food and the atmosphere are good for me once in a while. And we don't eat on those high-end restaurants but neither do we go to those fast-food chains. A simple restaurant that is not so expensive in a nice neighborhood is good enough for us.

Thanks for responding. I for the most part enjoy cooking at home and being able to feed my family heathy meals. It just gets to the point sometimes where it's a headache, cooking day in and day out.. I know it helps save money, in which is another reason I do it. We live in a smaller area outside Myrtle Beach SC, so when we do have a meal out we support our local restaurants.

Supporting your local restaurants is a good thing. Especially when it save you time in planning and cooking. Most of the time, we get frustrated with the cooking and that gives us headache or something.

I am a SAHM too, and generally with the kids, I am cooking from 730 am to 730 pm (just to make sure hubby has dinner when he gets off at 9) I try to make hot meals all the time in the winter and not so much in the summer. Either way it does get old. I want to go out to restaurants and for dinner with my husband, but it usually ends up that we weigh out whether it's worth the hassle of taking the kids with us or bothering one of our relatives to watch them for 2 hours and having to rush back and pick them up. So, what we do most of the time is order take out. Chinese, Pizza, Subs, whatever is easy for us to do and keeps me or even my husband from having to cook. But even that gets old after so many times! lol
But one thing we do whenever we are out and get hungry and have the extra money, we stop in at a random Chinese buffet. We usually go to those around the city trying to taste each one and compare them. I think I have gotten off the topic, lol, but really I cook all the time. And get tired of it quickly. I'd say the ratio of at home meals vs. out to eat meals would be 15:1

I am totally with you right there... It's not that I don't like to cook, I do... but I want that time out the house ( which usually turns more into a hassle), but at least i've gotten out of the house.
My husband works odd shifts, so he's either leaving at 6 30 pm to head to work to get home at 9 am.... or leaving the house at 6 30 am to get home at 9 pm.. So on his days he don't get home til 9pm, I usually cook two dinners. One for me and the kids, at our regular 5 dinner time, and then again start something for him to be hot when he gets home. I get so sick of it, but I know he's just worked 13 hours and he's starving, and he shouldn't have to come home to a soggy, cold dinner to have to throw in the microwave, only for it to be not so good.
I get off subject too, it's ok.. I enjoy it.

I cook breakfast and lunch every day. In the evenings, I try to make dinner at least 3 times a week and we usually order out the other 4 times. It sounds really bad, but my kids are in sports and we are usually out at a sporting event several times a week. If the event is during dinner, we usually eat at the consession stands~ pizza or hot dogs!
Once summer comes, I cook more often. I love grilling out and eating fresh veggies in the summer. We still run here and there but are able to eat later since they don't have school the next day.

Thank you for repsonding.
With sports, and community activities I can understand just grabbing on the go. That would be so much more work on you to try to make sure the kids are fed before the event, or after and still try to have them in bed at a decent time. That's just way to much, I think.
There are many times I wish I could just grab on the go.

Hmmm I go out to eat maybe once a month but I usually get to order pizza once a month too. But I usually do a lot of cooking and baking.. I will say invest in a crock pot and get two meals done at once. Start a crock pot meal for the next day while your cooking dinner .. Then count it as one less meal you have to make .. Sometimes I do what is called easy meals. That is where I have everything ready the day before and then all I have to do is throw it together... I love that. But I think there can be meals that are planned days in advance and prep work that can be done at one time if you know what you plan on making. Me I'm not always planned days in advance but I know when I'm just run down to start another meal in the crock pot so I can have a breather the next day.. Luckily all my kids are now in school and I have the day to myself and my eating has gone to pot becuase I eat like once a day. LOL!!!

Thank you for responding. I like your ideas and use some of them.
I plan a monthly menu. When we go to the grocery store we buy only things that are needed for the menu, and stick to it. The menu is made out with everyone's help on what they'd like to eat that month.
As for making meals a head of time. I do that... I always try to make sunday and monday big cooking days, so I can cook extra that day to use for later in the week. For say... Cooking a ham on Sunday, use it on Tuesday for ham steaks... Monday frying Chicken... Use the left overs on Wednesday for chicken casseroles, quesadillas... and so on... I just get tired of it day in and day out.

I only cook one hot meal a day they eat a cold lunch at lunchtime because it is easier and as they have got older I dont feel the need for them to be eating two large cooked meals a day.
We very rarely go out to eat and I enjoy that evening meal all together its a nice time to have so I dont really mind cooking I would if i had to cook three meals a day though!

Thanks for responding.
That is what is wearing me down is having to cook like that two or three times a day, two and three weeks a time with no break from it. My husband works odd shifts so the only real time we have together is dinner time so sitting down at the table to eat and socialize with each other and the spend time with the kids is always great. I have two children, who are opposites when it comes to eating. My son can munch on fruit and veggies all day and be satisfied, but my little girl is an eater and pretty much has to have a 7 course meal to feel satisfied.

Hi!I am a stay at home mom and I have lots of time to do all those household chores including cooking. But I find it enjoyabe because I like to cook.Aside from my usual recipes,I am fond of exploring new recipes from cook books, internet and some recipes given by my friends. My daughters just love what I cook for them. But f course,I think It is just right to at least eat out sometimes,a sort of bonding outside our home and a little break from my kitchen.
I still find cooking at home practical and advisable.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I enjoy trying new recipes, adding things to the meals I already prepare. I guess mine just comes down to, I feel overwhelmed sometimes after I have cooked day in and day out 2 to 3 times a day, and after a weekend of 3 meals a day... I am so burnt out. So I so look forward to being able to go eat out, and wish there was more times that we would.

For a student as I am, I never cook myself..
I just eat outside, but I have to manage my money wisely..
Btw, isn't now is a recession time..??
therefore, I recommend to all of you to save your money..
Start cooking!
