The year was 1962 and i was studying in the First Year of a Science college in Mumbai, India.I was very fond of Western pop music which at that time had soulful melodies of singers like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Cliff Richards, Ricky Nelson, Jim Reeves, Elvis Presley etc. In those days there was no TV so we would listen to music on the old big valve radios and transistor radios. One evening i had tuned to BBC World Service and was listening to music. Suddenly the announcer said that he would be playing a song by a group of talented young men who had started taking Britain by storm. The record started playing and i was mesmerised by the song as it was of a totally differnt genre, a totally different sound and a totaly different type of music, one that i had never heard before in my life. That song happened to be " I wanna hold your hand ". The announcer had not mentioned the name of the band so when the song ended i strained to hear the announcers voice as there was a lot of disturbance in the air waves. I heard something that sounded like Beetles. The next day when i went to college i excitedly told my friends about this group and told them to tune to BBC music program. A couple of days later i once again heard the same song as well as "She loves you yeah yeah yeah ".This time the announcer gave more details of the beat group and also the correct spelling of their name. I was completely hooked. Little did i realize that these youngsters were creating history and would become pathbreakers to a new type of music known as Beat Music.

I honestly can't remember; they split up a little before I was born, so I grew up with the entire back catalog being played in the house.

That's a terrific story! I really can't tell you the first Beatles song I heard. I was born after they broke up so I got all of their music from an AM oldies station. I remember spending hours sitting in front of my parents' stereo, tuned into an AM station that played music from the 50's and 60's. The first Beatles song that stands out in my memory is Hard Day's Night but I don't know if it was really the first I ever heard.

Ah yes, the Beatlemania years, I remember them fondly. I had heard about the Beatles from my cousin who lived in the UK before we had heard of them in this part of the world (Canada). She had been writing back and forth telling us of this great new group and how she was a big fan of them. Well, one day a few months later we were passing by a music store only to hear music blaring from the inside. There was a huge crowd of kids hanging around the store, and the fab 4's photos were plastered all over the store window. So, of course, when we seen it had something to do with the Beatles we were quite interested to see what was going on. It was at this moment that I had heard "She Loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah." for the first time. Who ever would have thought the Beatles would still be as popular as they were when I was a kid. It amazes me the amount of young kids who have heard of them. ~proudnana~
