I have a one year old and I need suggestions on feeding. I am still feeding most stage 3 food and I am trying to switch over slowly to people food. What are some suggestions to start with? What did you start your toddler out on? I am scared of him choking. He has 4 teeth. Thanks or any suggestions!!

At that age the food I cooked I would just mash it or cut into small pieces for my babies. Make sure you introduce new foods a little at a time as to know if an allergic reaction was from any of the foods.Of course nuts, and its products, and honey are suppose to be no-no at that age. My babies loved macaroni, mashed potatoes/vegatables, and small pieces of chicken at that age.

Our little one is one in 3 weeks and now has a mix of normal food & baby food. Mostly because my mother is our main childcare when we work shifts and is paronoid the little one will choke, so prefers to feed baby food or food pre prepared by me. However she will eat almost anything, She's a ganit and has been since about six months. She now has 8 teeth almost 10 and will munch through anything although I do try to make sure nothing is too big for her to choke on. I think the key is not to worry about the choking, Be prepared but don't worry as your little one is perfectly capable of eating alot more foods than you think. Start with the foods that turn to mush, potatoes, veggies etc and introduce other things slowly, so your happy with his progress and not about to panic for no reason.
He'll be fine on transition and so will you, enjoy the mess!! We've just started to let our little one have full control of the spoon & bowl!!:-)

I have three that range in age from two to five and they all loved sliced bananas, peeled grapes (skin on grapes can cause choking in some kids), cooked sliced carrots, green beans, peas, cherios, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes and sliced bits of pears and plain cooked macaroni noodles. They all enjoyed foods they could pick up and feed themselves. Gerber makes some little kiddie entrees that are great for when you're out or traveling they look like mini microwave meals and they are already in bite sized kid friendly pieces.

I wouldn't be too worried about choking. Just take it slow and watch him. Well-cooked veggies are a great first food--like sweet potatoes and broccoli. Partially cooked apples, raw pears, banana, and melons would be yummy. Fish is a nice soft 'meat.' My daughter loves pinto beans. Most anything that he can feed himself would probably be a good start and hold his interest.

Have you started on the Gerber Graduates yet? You can start giving him some soft vegetables like peas, and cooked carrots, apple sauce, small peices of banana, soft bread, you can start introducing him to all kinds of things now. Just cut everything up small and if there is skin on it like hot dogs, or grapes, remove the skin before giving it to him. He should also be able to start eating noodles, and some hard cereals. A lot of poeple start out with Cheerios, only giving him one or two at a time, until you know he can handle them.

My kids have all started to eat food by them selves. Pick peas from the plate or pieces of potatoes or what ever we've been eating. We haven't used canned food much for them. When they were 1 I guess they ate almost everything like apples (whole)- they had way more than 4 teeth tho ;) I don't know what Stage 3 food are - but I guess it must have pieces of food in it.
I hope you find some good advice here and stop being afraid of choking!

I think you should start feeding him with fruits like papaya mixed with milk and mashed properly with the blender. You can also try and feed the baby with boiled apple again mashed with the blender. You can also feed him with the rice mixed with tomato puree. You can try all these variations but remember one thing. Mash all these things properly using the blender. THen it will not choke him.

I'm amazed that your one year old isn't on people food yet. But, that's ok. I've read some of the other responses and they are all very good. You'll need to make sure they can't choke on the food. Now, I give my baby the hazzard foods and bad bad me, but I'm there with him. I just like to give him some new and exciting flavours and textures. I'd think, whatever you make would be good, but as you're making things, before you season it, set some aside for the little one. By your little one's age, he'd want to "feel" it so expect a mess. Don't worry if he smooshes it between his fat fingers and smear it all over his face. Just be careful of anything really messy (like cake with blue frosting...I can't believe my sister for that one). Also, check the temperature so the baby doesn't burn his mouth.
If a mess is something you're concerned about, bibs really don't work, in my honest opinion, but if they do for you, great. I've taken a dish towel and cut a hole in the middle of it and placed the baby's head through that.
Good luck, and most of all, have fun! Expect the messy times and it would be helpful to have someone nearby to aid you afterwards. That being, you clean the baby whilst they clean the rest of the mess. Oh, before I forget, before you sit down to eat, make sure you have everything narby so you don't have to get up a gazillion times.

Finger foods should be selected for their nutritional value. Good choices include teething biscuits, cooked vegetables, bananas, cheese sticks and enriched cereals. Avoid nuts, raisins, hotdogs and raw vegetables, which can cause choking. Offer small portions. it is fun for the child to ask for more. It is more effective to give small helpings than to assist that he eat a specific amount.
Adults who help toddlers at mealtime should be calm and relaxed. Avoid bribes or force feeding because this reinforces negative behavior and may lead to a dislike for mealtime. Avoid the use of sodas or sweets as rewards or between meal snacks. Instead substitute fruit, juice or cereal. :)

I started solids with my child when he was 4-5 months old. Baby cereals are a good start. When he was 6 months, I started blending/mashing bananas, potaoes, squash, avocados and other fruits and veggies with similar texture. When he was ready for whole foods I tried rice with soups in it plus softly cooked vegetables. Just make sure its soft enough for him to chew/swallow. When he was more than one year old, he's been eating what we, adults are eating. His favorites are noodles and pasta. He also likes different veggies because I started fruits and veggies when he was younger.

First so you are not concerned with chocking: ALWAYS ensure that your baby is sitting upright! If your baby cannot sit upright unassisted and does not have proper head control, it may not be the right time to begin solid foods! When baby is in a highchair or other infant-specific chair then baby is less likely to choke.
The link I have provided gives a chart of acceptable foods from CEREALS to fruits to veggies, etc.
"AGE/STAGE
Ten to Twelve (10-12) Months old
The AAP recommends that an infant not be started on solid foods until after 6 months of age. Many pediatricians still start babies on solids around 4 months of age. This chart accommodates all ages and stages up to 12 months."

HI. My daugher has a 9 month old, and he does not like baby food at all. What she does she will give him mashed potates only a little bit, or vegetables and mash them up really good. Just make sure the food is mashed up good and small amounts to start. My grandson is doing great, and is off baby food. She will give him the pudding still in the baby jars. Hope this helps you.

My youngest daughter just turned a year old. She is eating a lot of different things, but she only has 8 teeth, so she can't chew anything hard. Here is a list of things that you can try (all of it with supervision of course): Fruit Loops, Yogurt, Cheese, Green Beans, Mashed Potatos, Tomato, Refried beans, Any kind of puffed cereal, Vanilla wafers...Basically anything that is soft and easy to gum. I would hold off on the meat...Let him get used to the soft things first. Then you can pull it apart into tiny little pieces for him. That's what we did for my daughter. Oh yeah...she loves banannas, too. Any more questions, feel free to ask. I have 3 kids and there isn't much I haven't been through. My oldest is now 12, and we are going through puberty....NOT FUN. LOL
