You can pay extra for privacy, something like $5 a year extra and they will keep your private information private. When someone does a whois of your domain name then the name of your registrar will appear instead of your own information. Cheers!!

I'm not familiar with other domain registrars, so you may be able to do it for free. I use Godaddy and it does cost money ($8.99/year). But I trust Godaddy and have never had any issues with private registration.
When you're purchasing your domain and/or private registration use one of the following GoDaddy promo codes.
PANDA1 - 10% off any order (domains, private registration, SSL, web hosting, etc)
PANDA2 - $5 off orders $30 or more
PANDA3 - 25% off .COM domains and renewals.
Play around with the codes at checkout and see what gets you the best deal. Best of luck!

The thing is, you need to give your details when registering a domain name. And there is a service called as "Who Is" service, that can be used by anyone to know about the details of the person (like name, location etc) on whose name, the domain name is registered.
You can not prevent this. See for a sample: http://ws.arin.net/whois

People can query the domain owner information via WHOIS service. To prevent your information from being view to the public you can subscribed for the whois privacy provided by the domain registrar, so when someone query your domain information he/she can only see the information of the whois privacy company. Some registrar provided it for free when you register for a new domain name. So find the registrar that can provided it for free or at minimal cost.
