this 4 year old girl climbed into the front loading washer and her 15 month old brother hit the start button and it started up and she wasnt found till at least 2 minutes later..
i cant believe that a washing machine had a start button only 20 inches from the floor!! i have always seen the controls higher up!! god can you imagine that little boy growing up with this hovering over him? sure it was an accident but still..
how awful!

I know where you are coming from winterose. I can't even imagine the devastation that these people must have felt when finding there child. It is crazy how these freak accidents happen in life. It is hard for me to imagine also.

This is horrible. That boy will now grow up and when he's gonna realise what he's done he's gonna live with it his whole life. Thinking that you had a sister and you killed her because you pushed a button... It's horrible.
Also as a parent to experience that, oh my !

You are so right about that boy having to face the horror of what he did and to grow up with that over his head! I know that boy didn't realize what he did when he pressed that button. And the parents must live with this also. An awful shame isn't it?

yeah, that is a horrible way to go.
And I am sure the brother is going to be carrying a heavy burden when he learns about it later in life!
20 inches from the floor. The design of the buttons are 20 inches from the floor!
That is pretty low even for an adult to use. Sigh... I sure hope the girl can rest in peace!

At 15 months the brother has to be really short, and to be able to reach the start button on the washer is unbeleivable. The dials were really low on that machine. Poor little girl. children do not always understand the dangers that getting into appliances can cause. For safety sake, parents should always keep anything that can be harmful to their children under lock and key, since they cannot always keep their eyes on what the children are doing.
I feel so bad for the family.

yeah the button was only 20 inches higher than the ground which to me makes no sense since wouldnt that hurt an adults back to be bending that far all the time?

There are a lot of problems going on in this scenerio. First, where are the parents? Why are two extremely young children playing around the laundry machine? In the houses I have been in, the washing machines are almost always sectioned off from anywhere kids should be playing. Next, like so many people are pointing out, why are the controls so low? I could imagine a potential lawsuit springing up, considering this is how the world seems to be functioning. It seems like bad judgment on many people's parts, not to mention the trauma this little boy probably will have to deal with. Now, not understanding why he has no more sister to play with; and later, having to understand he accidentally killed his sister.

well i would be questioning the access to the washer too but the house i bought that i live in has the washer and dryer in the dining room with out any like partition or doors/walls between them so if the kids can get into the kitchen then they can get to the washer in the dining room..
the height of the controls is ridiculous! i dont even see why they would have them this low since i have a bad back and couldnt imagine bending that far to turn it on!! i wouldnt be able to ever do laundry!

OMG! that is very horrible. It's actually very shocking. Yes it's an accident but it wouldn't happen if the mother have watched the children and if that button was not low enough to reach by a 15 month old. I know its not right to blame and nobody's fault as it was an accident but i pity the young girl. Anyway, its a lesson to learn, so others will be aware and prevent it from happening again.

This is sad and very terrible. I can't believe the button was so close to the ground because it definitely made it so easy for her brother to hit the button. I think companies need to rethink their washing machines and how the buttons are placed, not to mention the sequence in which you have to push buttons to get the machine to start.
I really hope the family doesn't hold it over her brothers head. He's so young and really doesn't know any better.

That is a horrible event to happen. I feel for that child also that pressed that start button. It is going to be a long road to recovery for that child that did that. I hope that he finds the strength along with his family to overcome this grief. That child really is going to need support probably for a long time coming.

How horrible! I would think the appliance companies would think about little children being able to reach the controls and at least not use push buttons that are so easy to start. My thoughts and prayers go out to that family!

I do agree that praying is a great idea. There is not much we can do but pray for that family and child. You said it beautifully though prasanna. Her soul is with Jesus and hopefully will remain in peace forever.

oh this is really bad...
And as you rightly said, this is going to be a horribly scarring incident for this little brother. I just hope parents never mention it to him or anyone else that it was he who hit the start button. Somethings are better left unsaid.

omg. i cant believe that. that is too sad. children should not be allowed to play near machinery like that. most washers have to have the lid closed before they are able to be started. i cant help but wonder. either way a child is gone and it is soo sad. the little boy i hope dont remember this as it could cause some real damage. my thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

My washing machine hates starting, even if I close the door properly there are 2 buttons you have to press before it starts, and even in then it won't I have to open it and spin the drum once even though I evenly loaded it. So how on earth did a 15 month old manage to shut the door properly (as machines don't start unless you slam it really hard)and start the machine? It sounds like this model of washing machine is really dangerous and needs to be recalled!

What a terible thing to happen! Like others here I don't have a front loading washer but didn't realize the buttons were so kid accessible. I know accidents are never easily expalined but I was wondering how a 4 year old fit into a washer anyway? Mine is not a front loader and I guess they might be bigger but a normal sized 4 yr old couldn't get into mine because of the agitator ( at least I don't think they could). So sad.

Sweet Jesus! I cannot even imagine! My daughter is always climbing into, onto things. She is 2, and my 3 year old is always right behind her, flanked by my 1 year old. They are constantly into things and I am in constant fear of something like this! I cannot imagine what that family is feeling. A washing machine with the start that close in his grasp! I have to say, why, as parents didn't they toddler proof that? Lock the laundry room or put up gates?? So tragic!!!!

Oh it is terrible to read about the incident.Being a mother i know it must be very-very hard for the family to come in terms with what has happened.
I fully admit that it is a blunder on the part of washing machine company who has fixed the controls only few inches higher than ground.
May God give patience and perseverance to the bereaved family.

Hi,
I read this before.Really shocking.I am sure the washing machine & other apliances selling company will be sensitive now(after the accident) and draw some changes in the design/functioning,keeping in view this accident.
