LOS ANGELES - Stephen King’s opinion may drive a stake through the heart of “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer.
In an interview with USA Weekend, the bestselling author compared Meyer with J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series.
According to Stephen, “Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”
i kind of think it was tacky of stephen king to say this honestly. i mean yeah he has a right to his opinion but its annoying when people bash each other when they are in the same field.. its not like the twilight readers are running away from his books.. its like apples and oranges!!
do you think it was in poor taste?

Most definately in bad taste. And this is coming from a man who has been writing the same thing for 20+ years. Seems to me that King is writing from a 'formula' and has been for so long he would not know original if it hit him upside the head. I lost interest in the man after The Stand

I have always been a big fan of Stephen King. I used to read his books all the time but you just made me realize something here. It has been a very long while since I picked up one of his books at all. I never gave it a thought as to why really. I maybe just got bored with him....don't know. Either way...Twilight...it was a good read and I'm old ...not young so I hope no one pays attention to his opinion. It held my attention and left me wanting to read more!

It does sound rather tacky of him. Yes, he is entitled to his opinion, but he is old enough that he should remember the old adage we were taught as kids, if you can't say something nice about someone then don't say anything at all

yes I agree it really is in bad taste, King should know better than that. But it is his opinion and just as people judge his work he has the right to judge others. I just don't think that I would do it.

yeah.. the only thing i can think of is maybe he just said it without thinking but still.. i wouldnt want to make any enemies in the business and make myself look judgmental towards others either.. but i guess he figures with his talent/name he has already established himself there fore can judge and wont be affected by the way it came off

I don't think it was in poor taste. He was stating his opinion and quite frankly, I agree with his opinion. I've read every one of the books in the Twilight series and honestly, it's a really terrible series. She had an interesting plot but really, her writing is terrible. Some of the characters were poorly developed, she can't really write well enough to jump between scenes and topics. The only reason why she is so popular is because it's a safe story that teens girls are just in love with because the leading male character is completely and totally in love with this girl and he'll do anything for her. That's what teen girls want and they're eating her books up like candy because of it.

I think this was a pretentious thing to say. He is not the king of writing; and his opinion isn't so important that it should be front-page of USA Weekend. I've always had a high opinion of him, but in this article..He's flat out dissing Meyer - not even giving constructive criticism, which is sometimes necessary.

It was very poor taste. Stephen King is the KING of this type of reading. He does not have to put anyone starting out down.....no one is going to take his place. That being said, I just got done reading TWIGHLIGHT'" recently. I am a fan of Stephen King's books and I am also a fan of Jo Rowling. I had never until my daughter gave me the book read or heard of "Twilight". I was surprised to find how popular it really was. I loved the book and plan on reading the sequel. Now prior to this, I read Glass and that series and also thought it was excellent. That too was supposedly geared toward young people. I would recommend it to anyone of any age. I would say that these two authors broke the age barrier and appeal to all. Stephen King is awesome but he is complicated in a way that does not appeal to a younger person that may not be really into reading....know what I mean? Young people today have so many other options and many are not really into books. My daughter loves these sorts of books when before I rarely saw her pick up a book simply to enjoy. I think it is great. The fact that I too, very much enjoyed the books makes them great writers in my eyes. She is 15 and I'm 52 and they succeeded in impressing us both.

im thinking that maybe SK is feeling the burn of her popularity because i know a lot of younger people wont read sk because its too deep or long etc but read other stuff.. i think maybe with this twilight being popular in a lot of younger readers he may feel some competition there or something..

Well I must say this before i even go on.. I dont even like steven kings books.. I have like 3 sitting here in my house that was given to me,and I have not picked up a single one..
Hes just not my taste I suppose.
I have a friend that wants this book, and I am going to get it for her.. I might just get the book for myself as well.
I absolutly hate when someone makes comments like this about someone who may not be as good as them. And im pretty sure it is hard to be like stephen king hes one of the top freaking whatever u wanna catagorize him in...
But im sure she wasnt tryn to be like him or as good as him..
I think that his comment was rude and uncalled for.
That was basically telling her she sucked and she should stop trying..Why would you tell someone that?. IOts not like she could get better if she did suck...That just amkes me mad. and I mean I never really thought anything of stephin king because again i dont read his books or anything. but now that he has made this comment i do think of him not in a positive way..
I absolutly hate people like that...
Her book is pretty popular,so even if he didnt like it. the world obviously does. so he can go ____himself:)..

exactly.. i mean i like stephen kings work but im not a readers so i havent read much but you can tell he is talented in his ideas (even if the movies seem to butcher them all to hell) but i mean dont bash some one else ya know? i dont know how long she has been writing but she hasnt been popular long so im guessing she is somewhat knew (compared to him at least she would be new) and shes not trying to copy him or as far as i know even mentioned him so it was just like out of the blue it seems..
one persons idol is another persons crap so i mean even if she does suck as long as she is selling then leave her alone!! its not like people are being forced to buy every book and she is promising that they will be great to where they are being ripped off and have to buy from her again in the future.
not to mention think about hollywood and singers etc.. there is a lot of bad quality out there but obviously some people believe in them..
i dunno just seems rude..

I love to read and have read all three Authors books..
I am an adult but really enjoyed reading all Harry Potter books and Twilight books, but haven't always been thrilled with King books..so like some have said here its all different, unique and wonderful in their own writings..and if all were the same then why would we need more Authors to hear from?
I see jealousy, and childish behavior coming from King which will affect the way some feel about him, but thankfully we still have the right to choose what and whom we like and don't need anyone's approval.

i think its jealousy because i dont hear as much on sk as i used to.. used to be that every time he farted some body talked and raved about it where as now i never hear anything about him as far as books or movies unless i literally run into it at the stores or something.. i never hear of teens talking about sk anymore and i know when i was a teen a lot did

Absolutely it is in poor taste...An opinion is ok but to publicly insult someone like that in any profession is not nice. Everyone has their own opinions and i know there is a lot of fans of Twilight...There are people that probably dont like Stephen King either...But as you said, to bash someone in his own profession...come on, didnt he like all the attention that Twilight got??

oh thats terrible
why would he say that about one of his peers?
you know his writing is NOT all that great so I dont know where the hell he has room to talk
at least meyer can keep the story line moving without all the flashbacks and flashforwards and crap

yeah his writing you have to have a taste for so its not like he is all that to where he can judge.. obviously she has a movie based on her books and a huge following so people like her whether or not the quality is there (i say that because i have no personally read it so i dont know how she is)
