Doctors amazed at baby born with 24 fingers and toes

February 4, 2009 1:01pm CST
A baby boy has been born with 24 fingers and toes He has six fingers and toes on each hand and foot. All digits are perfectly formed and fully functioning. The baby's father was surprised as the extra fingers and toes were not detected by maternity staff or the radiographer. The condition is called Polydactylism and affects 1 in 500 babies You can read the full story here: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090204/twl-double-dozen-digit-baby-blessing-3fd0ae9.html The parents have not yet decided weather to have the extra toes or fingers removed. But doctors say that the baby should keep them. What would you do in this situation would you have them removed or would you just leave well alone?

AS al the fingers and toes are fully formed and functional, then I think they should leave them just as they are. Yes the child might get teased but if the parents handle this correctly, this little boy will be able to handle it and mabe even turn it to his advantage. According to an artice I read, the Dad had a similar thing when he was born but his were not properly formed and nor were they functional. Under those circumstances the extra digits were removed when he was just a baby. It is genetic on the father's side of the family and several other family members have been born with extra fingers or toes, but not both and nor have any of the others been formed properly. I would say this is one very special boy. It is up to the parents what they finally decide to do but they can make this little boy feel very special if they handle the situation properly. I am sure if they decide not to have them removed, the they will get help on how to explain it to their son.

Thanks for the extra info so it is hereditary. I do hope that they get the help they need to be able to deal with it.

that is incredible... i pity the baby though... i think i will remove them if i am the mother if there is no health risk involved in the operation... but if the risk is too much, i will just leave them as they are as i think life is still much more important than appearance... having six fingers on each hand and foot is still better rather than losing your life when trying to get rid of the fingers... take care and have a nice day...

True the parents will have to weigh up all the options and decide what is best for them and the baby.

I would have the fingers removed. But I am not the only deciding person. My husband would have to make a decision also and we have been know to not make the same decisions. I would be scared if I gave birth to a baby like that. I am not making fun I am being honest.I really would be scared they probably would have to sedate me. So my hat goes off to that lady who gave birth to that child. Because there would be a news story about me right under the one about the baby. But having those extra fingers could be a blessing.

Yes both parents would have to agree. It could turn out to be a blessing in the end.

Wow, that is truely amazing. I have never heard of any of the digits being fully functional before. Only heard stories where there was some extra skin and unformed bone. I don't know what I would do. My first response is if they work, keep them. Then be prepared to always be explaining to everyone you meet.

I have never come across it either I should imagine that they would get fed up of explaining to other people after awhile.

Hey littleone! I had read this story the other day. I know that the doctors feel that the child will be ok with the extra digits. But, emotionally I don't really think that it is a good idea for them to let the child keep them. He will always be taunted about having them and being different. That is how children are when someone is "different". I think that it would be better if the parents let the doctors remove them now when the child is a baby and not have to deal with later on in life.

Hi Opal Children can be so cruel especially like you said if someone is different.

My nephew that is alittle older than my son was born with an extra toe on each foot. They got the toes removed. It was the mothers choice. My brother didn't want it done.

They do usually remove them if they are not fully formed or functioning

HI. I saw that news, and I would not remove any. Its how the little guy was born. There is a reason for everything.
