The difference is Emo is about scene kids 'following the trend' they claim to be 'different' though all look the same...Punk on the other hand is about people being themselves, believing in what they want to believe in,acting how they want to act, doing what they want to do,speaking out about whats right and wrong in the world. The music often doesnt sound similar either, unless your listening to radio 'punk' like greenday. They are not punk they have turned mainstream in order to get more money, they are simply sell outs.Punk music often incorporates ska, reggae,oi!,psychobilly, rockabilly, folk, country, bluegrass etc making most bands have quite a different sound, and all punk bands have different beliefs and there for sing about different issues that are affecting the world today.
Hope that's been of some help :)

The difference is that punk is better...lol! No, it is the messages and undertones of the songs that make them different. Punk is meant for more of the rebellious type of people who just dont care about the norm or conforming to society. Emo is for more of the sensitive side.

I think that difference betweem them is that emo is more emotional and punk is more kind of like everything sucks and I hate everything. I was a pretty big fan of punk music for a while but never really a fan of emo music. I grew out of the punk scene because they kind of have the same chord progressions and basically same music all the time.

I think it has to do with the message of the lyrics. For instance punk music is speaking out against the man and the corporate machine and parents and all that, and they are speaking out by yelling and screaming and breaking things. While EMO music is rebelling against alot of the similar things, but by taking it out on yourself rather than others.

There are a lot of fine lines between them. Obviously emo and screamo grew out of the punk movement. There are so many sub genres that you can't say punk is this way and emo is that way.
For me the defining factor has always been the vocals, how they are sung as well as the lyrics themselves.
