I am thinking about an SUV. I have never owned one, always driven smaller compact cars. My last cars were Hondas. I have a 43 mile commute to work, so the Hondas get great gas mileage, and that's great with the gas prices these days. But I have been eyeing the new Mazda CX7, new SUV for 2007. It's pretty cool, kinda like a Murano, kinda like a Lexus.

Is it 43 miles one way or round trip? If it's one way I'd stay away from an SUV unless you can afford a hybrid.
If you are thinking about a Mazda I would go with an RX-8 because it looks sporty and I think it's relatively cheap for what it is. Could be wrong though.

What's you budget. The most important thing to keep in mind is the money you have. If you have around 3 lakhs then it would be better to go for a Maruti Zen. But if you can afford more then go for Maruti Swift, Wagon R or Santro.Maruti is the best company for small segment car

My budget is a max of 5 lakhs. But I heard that Maruthi cars have refurbished engines in their newer cars. Im not too comfortable with that.

Depends on your budget, but if it was me I would get the new TOYOTA TUNDRA 2007 model, do some research on the net about it. It has the best towing, side impact, and room in it's class. You can do so much more with a truck than you can with a car. Engine 5.7 V8-runs like a sports car, rides like a luxury car, and the workhorse of the truck. 0-60 in 8.0 seconds, that's pretty good for a truck. of coarse you could get the 500 horse power dodge truck.
