Would you ever go swimming in a lake?

I dont know if I would trust lake water to go swimming in. I would rather go swimming in the ocean or a pool. But I do know alot of people do go swimming in lakes. Don't you worry about snakes and bacteria in the water? So would you go swimming in a lake?

I'll swim in a lake, but only if it has a designated swimming/beach area. I've learned the hard way that you can get chiggers or LEACHES if you don't pay attention to where you're swimming. We don't really have snakes in my area, so I don't have to worry about that much.

*Shudders*. Well, leaches aren't usually in LAKES themselves, but in smaller swamps, ponds, and rivers that are often connected to lakes. It makes me cringe thinking about it. ;) Thanks for the BR, by the way!

I grew up near lakes, reservoirs, stone quarries, and lots of rivers and creeks. I have swam in all of them. Never worried about the snakes and bacteria, though now I wouldn't swim in our river, its not as clean as it was when I was growing up. Though I would still swim in a lake and not think twice about it. The place I prefer to swim in is a stone quarry, the main reason why, is how clean the water is. Its cleaner than any pool I have been too, without all the chemicals. Now I will avoid any source of water, that has thick algae growing on the surface, but other than that, if I want to swim, I am going to.

Well if I saw algae I would definitely stay away. But I guess if it was a hot day and the water looked clear I would go in.

I'm more worried about swimming in the ocean because of sharks. We have a Lake here which I hardly ever get to go to because it's outside of town and we don't have a car. I don't think there is snakes in the lakes unless you in Africa or some other weird country.

Then swimming in your lake would definitely be out of the question.

There's snakes here in the south. Sometimes you will see a water moccasin which is poisonous.

I guess if the lake is clear it would be alright to swim in.

I swim in lakes every year and I do agree that I would much rather swim in a pool. I really hate the muck at the bottom and the weeds floating around, but if your hot enough and really want to swim you go where you can.

On a hot summers day here in the south I may consider it if its the only option.

For me it all depends on where the like is and what surrounds the lake and the water source. When I was kid and living in Nebraska there ween't many swimming pools in our area. so if we wanted to go swimming it was to one of the man made lakes. These lakes were created to store irrigation water and were filled by snow melt from the Rocky Mountains. This was pure clean water as it could possible be. These lakes had nice clean beaches and no snakes. The only dangerous snake was the rattler and you would hear it long before seeing it. They would leave the area if one made a lot of noise. But I never saw one at the lake.

I won't even swim in the ocean generally. Lots of nasty stuff out there. But if it was a fairly clean lake I might go in. The lake near us is very dirty and while swimming is allowed, I don't see how anyone would want to swim with all that scum on the top of the water and the horrible smell that lake gives off. But apparently some people do swim in that water.

I have gone swimming in a lake and a creek. It was when I was younger and stupid. I never thought about bacteria and stuff back then. Now that I'm a mom, I do think about all that yucky stuff though so I wouldn't do it now.

I had experienced swimming in a lake but I did not go far because it seems to suck you down and besides the lake we went to was very deep and there were already lots of people who drowned in that lake. Then one day when we were about to get back to the other side with only a small boat with outrigger and paddle, the outrigger which was just tied loosely was unfastened and the boat sank very fast with 3 of my colleagues in it and when they were already neck deep we realized that we had to get them out fast. Anyways they survived and we tied the outrigger again and paddled across to the other side.

I live in Michigan, "The great Lakes state"... well, I dont know, I really dont like swimming in water that I cant see the bottom of, and around here the lakes are pretty industrial with the freighters and such...we do go to the beach and we wade in the water but we dont do much swimming. However, in a pool I will swim...LOL --well a clean one!! LOL

I've been swimming in a lake more than a few times before... it's not as nice as swimming in a pool. To be honest... it's much nastier to swim in the ocean, for me. It's really salty and there's far more bacteria out there in the big blue. I don't worry about snakes in a lake... if I get bitten I'll have my swimming buddy there to save me.

I grew up in a country with some lakes. When I was 7 years old, I like to swim in lakes very much. What a perfect time it is! I ever seized fish and crab in lakes. It's a wonderful feeling you couldn't get in a pool. The only bad thing of swimming in a lake is that you must take precautions against a leech!
