That is an odd question but it is interesting as each area will have its own.
I'd say in general in the US; Smith and Jones are some of the most common.
Then you have ethic groups and they have common names like Ramos, Gracia, Yee and Patel (just to name some of the more common ones.

Over here, the 10 most common surnames are Wong, Lim, Tan, Jong, Lee, Li, Chan, Chen, Wee and Lau.
I'm mentioning only Chinese surnames because the natives here do not have surnames. Their last names are usually the name of their father. For example, if a native boy's name is John and his father's name is Michael, then his name would be John ak Michael with "ak" being "the son of". Uncomplicated like that, if you ask me.

Back home the most common surnames are Santos, de Carvalho, de Oliveira, Martins, de Jesus etc. The first and the last are usually indicative that at some point in that person's family line someone was abandoned in a church.

My country is a mixture of different races. You see Spanish, Chinese and American surnames. Barredo, Velasquez, Sarmiento, Gonzales, Agabao, de luna, Gabriel are some of the examples of Spanish surnames. Lee, Ang, Sy, Chua, Lim, Tan for the Chinese. Page, Thomas, McGraw for the Americans. All the best.
