As I watched the news last night, I was very much surprised knowing the issue that Fr. Suarez (the healing priest) is about to build a shrine in Batangas (if am not mistaken) that cost 1billion pesos! As for my own opinion, am a Catholic and a devotee of Mama Mary, but i guess, this shrine costing 1 billion could help a lot of people, street children, victims of flash floods, etc. I guess CBCP must do something about this because even though the money came from donations alone, still its not proper to loose such huge amount of money. Though the purpose is good but i guess its not yet the right time to do it specially that a lot of people is facing financial crisis.

Well for me for as long as the donations are geared to that project and should not come from the church's other donations I guess that would be fine for me. What fears me is that the one that will implement the project should be accountable for every penny they put in the construction of the shrine. 1 Billion is really big enough and there is a lot of things the contractor can do to hogwash the project for their own pockets. And I do hope that when the shrine is finished it would be open to all Catholics and not become a place where few people can come in and they would have to pay for entrance or something like that.

As far as I know, they do not have the money yet for the construction, they're still on the "gathering" process of the amount and are still looking for some sponsors.

If there are people that could raise that amount then go for it. But I would not agree that the church money for other projects would be used for that. Making money for that project would only for that project only. If they could raise it then why not.

Well... if we look at it in a different perspective... creating that shrine in Batangas would also mean the creation of jobs... for those who were or will be laid of by companies closing down... let us face it... a lot of our countrymen are not trained to be call center agents or customer care personnel... some are skilled in construction work... or jobs that the building of this shrine will need... So i don't really think it will be a waste... because of the job it will create... and that is better than just giving money or feeding people who are considered as the poor... why not hire them so that they will retain their pride because they will actually earn the money that they will use to feed their family... and not just dole out that will eventually disappear...

Excellent post! I guess you're an economist.. lol.. I strongly agree with you here dude.. Giving donations will only make those poor people lazy. The real solution is to give them jobs and teach them how to earn a living.

i totally agree with you... it is so unnecessary to waste so much money just for a shrine... especially in this economic crisis condition... the money can be better use for some other more useful purposes like helping the more unfortunate people... take care and have a nice day...

Yes, the shrine is being built in Batangas City, atop a hill overlooking Batangas Bay (a major sea vessel thoroughfare) and Verde Island. You have a good point there but I wonder how the donors will react if the funds will be used in another project. I don't also think postponing the project just because of the looming financial crisis will do good. Building the shrine later will be more costly for sure. So instead of stalling the construction, re-thinking or re-designing the plan should be instituted instead.

I do not see anything wrong with building a shrine. But the cost in building the shrine I believe is way too much. 1 Billion Pesos? I wonder what the shrine is made of. In my opinion, it would be better if the build a shrine that doesn't cost that much and spend the rest of the money in projects that would benefit the people who need the most help.

The shrine will compose of a big statue of Our Lady of the Poor bigger than the statue of Liberty in the US.

I am sorry, cathya....I do not understand what the thinking is here! In these times of economic recession, worldwide...would that money not be better spent caring for the needy, and building shelters? It is also the time, that Fr. Suarez will not gather popular opinion the world over, for this shrine, as a lot of us do not understand the "purpose." Cheers!

According to Fr. Suarez (from the interview by Karen Davila) his purpose of building this huge shrine is to keep the faithful closer to God and make this shrine as one of the tourist destination as well.

Oh, gosh...I don't think in this time of economic depression...a grandiose expenditure like this will garner popular opinion world over! It is a flagrant mockery of the difficult times persons are experiencing! And who will be the tourists? We are in a depression!
