I quit poutting bird seed in my fdeeder a couple months ago with the 20 below zero temps and ran out at that time as well. Now dad asked about seeds to fill the feeder as he sits near the window and that's his entertainment at times. I told him seeds are tripled in price since the summer. Well he said he'd buy it so I got another 25 pound bag of wild bird seed and filled the feeder. All that visits it so far is black birds and squirrels. But dad loves watching anything feed off the birds meals. This shot isa of a smart squirrel. Blackbirds were all over the feeder. When he gopt the chance he climbed up and shoved a lot of seeds off the feeder onto the ground. As the black birds fed from the feeder he had his share on the lawn.

I avopide feeding them peanuts as they start to grow underground if they bury them. The seeds even start to grow sitting on top of the lawn. Hahahaha!

But they store them in the ground anyhow.
They fill their cheeks up then leave them elsewhere.
Someone elses lawn maybe not yours.

Bob, My dog was doing the same thing. I don't want my animals on my new furniture, so for a few nights before bed I would put my laptop in the seat, she wouldn't get in it with that there, Maybe if you put some card board boxes or something like hat it will keep him down until he gets the idea, it only took mine about 4 nights to get the message. Hope this helps, Blessings Marilyn

Right response but in the wrong discussion.
I was thinking, the dog fills the birdfeeder?
Thanks though.

Years ago I watched this show on PBS where a family tested squirrels and their intelligence with mazes with traps etc set in them for them to get seeds etc. They proved there really is no squirrel proof feeder. Hahaha!

I like bird feeders too. I used to buy bird seeds and I would sit and watch all the different kind of birds that would feed on my seeds. And all the different little wild life creatures, I had some chipmunks out there too. And those dang squirrels. I stop thinking they were cute when they put a hole in the side of my house. Now I don't want to have anything to do with them.
I am happy to here that dad enjoy looking at the wild life. It is good entertainment for him. I know he is shut in because of all the cold weather and those little creatures bring him joy and relaxation.

love watchiong the various species of birds in the neighborhood.
The squirrels are funny watching them as well.
More fun than the birds most times.
Dad enjoys it a lot.
It's very relaxing watching the critters all day.

I love to watch the birds and the Squirrels. They can be quite entertaining to feed. My Grandmother used to love feeding the birds. She had bird feeders all over her porch and always had a good supply of bird feed on hand. I think everyone should appreciate the beauty of nature and watch the squirrel and the birds once in awhile.

Very entertaining to say the least.
My favorite are the tiny little finches feeding in the warmer months.
There are some very cute and colorful ones around here.

my mom is like that, she loves to watch the birds and Squirrels eat
when ever we have the money we buy both bird seed and peanuts to feed the animals and it is funny sometimes to watch the birds steal the nuts from the Squirrels lol

I have a bird feeder, but I put critter food in it because the cats like the squirrels better
I went to the vet today and because the drought caused the oaks to not produce any acorns, they are feeding the local squirrel and it will crawl up on the tech when she goes out to feed her

Yeah, those squirrels sure are smart...lol. We have a few in our back yard, and they like to run up and down the trees where the dogs are, its like they're tormenting our dogs, because they know the dogs can't reach them, the dogs just go crazy..haha. I have a bird feeder too, and honestly I forget to feed them, but I like watching them too.

It gives dad something to do most days as well.
The blackbirds get the bread and stuff before the squirrels mostly here.

Hey Grandpa Bob! Well I think that it's nice to feed the
critters and whoever gets to the food first wins! I guess
you can't do anything about who is going to get to the seeds!
I'm sure there's plenty for the birds too! As long as it makes
your Dad happy to watch them and it's entertainment for him
them I guess it really doesn't matter. At least some of the
critters get to eat and your Dad gets to have fun at the
same time!

I planted sunflowers for this pair of yellow finches that came back four years running. Now theey tend to be for the squirrels.
The kids don't care if I feed them or the birds so I put out what I can.
Dad is glad for his time by the window I'm sure... it's like my time watching the light come up.

That's a beautiful squirrel! I can get seed at Tractor Supply for $20 a 50 pound bag. I'm on the second bag, I'm hoping it lasts till the warm weather! That's black oil sunflower seed, not regular stuff with a lot of filler. I found the regular mix mostly was kicked to the ground, they didn't like it at all.
My squirrel hasn't been around lately but I put out some corn for him. He doesn't bother the feeder but loves the suet. I went out in the cold and snow to fill my feeder, I figured the colder it was the more they needed the seed! I don't have blackbirds but lots of starlings.
