Do you agree or disagree that children have lots of homework?

My son will go to the primary school next year. How time flies! Currently I am already concerned about which primary school he shall attend. There are two primary schools nearby my home. One has quite a lot of homework for the children, the other also has many homework but just not as many as the first one. It's a dilemma. I don't want my child has a heavy study pressure. More homework means less spare time etc. But if he has less homework, does it mean that he can't catch others because he doesn't have more homework? Perhaps others will have a better achievement because they have a heavy study pressure? This is a difficult decision and I will have a year to think about it.

I know sometimes my children are over burdened by extra homework. They are all in advanced classes thus they get more. As soon as they get home they complete it before doing anything else. That then gives them the rest of the night for other activities.

I agree alot of the school have way to much homework, I can understand for some of it, but for so much is ridiculous... seriously! My son is in kindergarten and he has homework every day... not only does it cut back on spare time for him, but for me as well since I have to sit down and help him with it, not that I mind, I want him to learn, but then somethings get put off til the next day and now my weekends are all getting caught up on the house that didnt get done during the week and spending less time getting to go out because of it. and considering kindergartners have to spend more time doing homework because they have less attention spands..and they are just learning all of it... *sigh*... oh well, summer will be here soon...I hope!! good luck to you with whatever school you choose.

Students should not be burdened with homeworks. They will be stressed out. They have spend the whole day in school and bringing back a load of homework will leave them less time to play and rest.

Hi my friend Youless. I suggest that you visit both schools and look around them to see exactly what the offer. You will want your son to be happy and to do well in the curriculum. I guess that it would be a good idea to talk to parents of children already at the schools. I imagine in the first year you son will get some homework and it will increase in work load each year he gets older. You wouldn't want your son to feel unhappy and tired with a great deal of homework to do. If he proves studious then the homework might really help his learning in school. Over the next year you could see how willing he is to do counting, looking at picture books and drawing pictures. If he just wants to play then he might be ready for lots of study later. Good luck.

Just to add my older son is in Year 9 and he will be 14 in April. He gets lots of homework and hands some in late because he is so bus with it all. He has a Maths exam in early March that will give 27% to his General Certificate in Education. The school predict grade B and he needs to revise a bit more I feel.

I hope your son will have a better achievement and enjoy study. You are right, I have to "research" both of schools and hopefully I will make a right decision.

Well, it really depends on how well your child can cope with the workload as well. I wouldn't worry too much. Just go with the school that you think will be able to care for your child better. Some times, it is not about how much home work the child has to help him to achieve good academic results. It is how the teacher teach that makes the material he studies understandable. No point having loads of home work, and they do not understand what they are doing. Try going to the school, find out from the people who have attended to see if the teachers are patient, caring and able to make the child understand what is taught rather than worrying about the amount of home work the child will get.

It is strange how different teachers do things differently. When my son was in 1st grade he had homework every night. When he was in 2nd grade he had homework maybe 3 nights a week. In 3rd grade he has homework a few times a week and when he does it is only 1 maybe 2 papers. Some teachers manage to get the kids to learn so much in class that homework is not really necessary.

My son just switched schools last week because we moved to a different area. Today is his 5th day there. He had 1 homework paper on Tuesday and on last night. That is it so far. His one one Tuesday he finished in under 5 minutes.javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cphMainContent$lbStart','')

Today's children are really faced with much competition and pressure in school. So, to match the modern era, I would agree that my kids would have lots of homework. It's a sort of review for them to understand the lessons more. In the end, they will benefit for that.

I don't think children should have lots of homework, I think they need to enjoy their childhood life, enjoy playing and having fun with their friends instead of spending all the time on studying and doing homework. I think it's a personal development too. Study is just part of life.

I think that the older grades of school have too much homework. My sons are in grades 2 and 4 and can get their homework done usually within 20 minutes or less. But my daughter in grade 8 does an hour at least on a good day, but many nights she is working for hours to get her homework done. I look through it all and there are 20 to 30 questions that are long for each subject. When we have long weekend and holidays the projects and reports come out. So many times we want some family time which is lost to her homework. I think this is terrible, in fact there is a group advocating to make limits on the amount of homework a teacher can give in this area. One request is that holidays are actual holidays. Sucks to have to do a report easter morning, but yes, we have done that. Also that no more than an hour a night of homework which I think is fair. It doesn't teach you how to be a grown up as when most adults go home, they don't bring their work with them. I think that there should be more time for the family and less on homework. Most of which she will only use to help her child get through it at school. I have never used 1/2 of the stuff I learned at grade school.

Here it's the same. If there will be holiday, then the children will have much more homework than usual. It's so terrible.

well maybe they have lots of homework but they have a very good standard of teaching..here in korea after they finish at school children went to academy school where they have to learn more ..last time my son have a private tutor but it seems that he doesnt want to study, as if he already gets bore so i stop his private teaching lesson..but it seems now that he get used of it..so i think more homework is also a good exercise for your son..but its up to you to decide..goodluck

I have one in the 3rd grade and one in the 5th grade - this is in Sweden - remember that *lol* they have three different home works every week. One in math - takes about 10 minutes for them to make (but they are good students - some might have to sit a bit longer) One in English - with words to learn - not many at all like 10-20 every week One in Swedish - mainly reading and some small writing assignment. I would say it takes maximum 1,5 hours every week. They don't have that long schooldays either - and even this Swedish studens have the same level of education as students in most other countries. I do belive that loads of home work just will do harm - children need to play and have time for activities like sports and reading books of their choice.

hello youless one of my sons is in the third grade this year, and it seems like he has less homework this year than he did last year when that he was in the second grade for some reason. he usually only has homework twice a week this year, on Tuesday and Thursday's nights. then my other son is in the fifth grade this year over in Middle School. he has loads of homework, some night he has homework in three different subjects. it takes him at least an hour and a half to two hours on some nights to finish all of his homework. then they are both supposed to read on a nightly basis. the school children attend school everyday, and i think that some of the school teachers needs to give the children a break from so much homework on a nightly basis, like my fifth grader is having to complete this year. take care and have a beautiful evening.

Home work is a normal part of the childs life.No one likes it but in order for you child to get on and reach his full potential they have to do it,my grandaughter who is just six gets three books a week to read and maths sheets, she knows no different and does it without thinking,if you make a fuss it will make life difficult for you child at school, that is a lesson we parents learn quick do what the school says and it is easier all roundGet you son to come home from school have a drink and a snack then straight on with the homework,no playing till he finishes he will get so used to it,he won't give it a second thought.Theres one thing I have learnt through all this it is no good harping back to the old days about how we used to do things it is a shock but that is the world our children grow up in and we have to support them all the way ,even if we don't agree with it.Sad but true.x

Yes, in the past I posted a similar post as my son even has homework when he is in the kindergarten right now. However, he will go to the primary school next year and I feel a heavy pressure to it as it's hard to choose the school.

Hello youless, I agree that kids nowadays have lots of assignments, coz my kids does, especially my daughter. But if you're there to guide her that would be okay, or as long as the teacher discusses the lessons very well then it would not be a great burden to your kid. It's nice that you take your time well in choosing your kid's school. I hope you son will always have fun in learning things... :)

Sometimes the children's homework is difficult. Besides it, I think the quantity is a big problem. Hard to believe that so heavy homework will give to children.

Homework is an issue that even teachers debate. How much, how detailed, what is the purpose, etc. I think though that no matter what you do homework will always be there. However, what isn't there is the knowledge of how to study. Most students believe that homework is the same as studying. It's not. Studying is something that a child should do daily, and get in the habit of doing if they wish to be successful in their educational career. There are some wonderful sites available online that can help faciliate good study habits. Anora

yes, nowadays children have lots and lots of homeworks to do for them and even schools do not understand that they are childrens,i have seen my neighbour always taking a lot of projects and writing till nights even some midnights and the teacher provides only less marks though she does those works welland good, that teacher must provide good marks atleast.you have to encourage your child in extra curricular activities and not only in academice,it is good if you join him in the second school.he has to know keyboard, voilin and all some instruments and has to relax from his studies tension too.i agree that children today have lots of homework,i have seen many asking the answers for homeworks in yahoo answers too.

in china ,especially in big cities, lots of homeworks are common. because the teaching resorces are limited, the children have to work so hard to squeeze into the key schools. other children attend weekend classes , how about ur kid? if ur kids dont, maybe their parent dont want their kids do things like that from their own mind, but they are afraid that if the kids cant gain high scores. as a result, every family forces their children to spend much more extra time on homework etc.,
